You have been subscribed to a public bug: Image http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/daily-live/20100406.1/lucid-desktop-i386.iso MD5Sum 8f323f741fefdb3e9e72aaa5666b2d6e "Check disc for defects" (run on a different computer than the test system) reports no errors. I booted from a CD, chose English, and selected "Try Kubuntu without installing". After ~10 seconds the screen flashed on and off repeatedly, then stayed in the black-but-powered-on state. Eventually I heard the KDE start-up sound. The screen did not light up when I tried moving the cursor or pressing keys. Ctrl-Alt-F1 and Ctrl-Alt-F7 did not switch to other TTYs or sessions. The test computer is an HP Elitebook 8440p model WH255UT#ABA. Chipset: Mobile Intel QM57 Express, graphics: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator HD. Note especially that this computer _does_ boot up successfully with a year-old Xubuntu 9.10 Live CD. ** Affects: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: iso-testing -- lucid beta 2 live shows black screen https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/557744 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 565870] Re: Xorg crashes with 855GM on boot: Failed to submit batchbuffer: Input/output error
With regards to enabling KMS, I was under the wrong impression that it was still enabled for the intel driver. Re-enabling it via i915.modeset=1 on the grub cmd line adverts the crash and X boots successfully. However DRI seems to have been deliberately disabled (see attached Xorg.conf), thus AIGLX instantiates the Mesa renderer. Also, playing any video in Totem or VLC player simply kills X. I don't know whether this is related to DRI, or to my update path from 9.10, where it used to work. I will try to find any information relevant on the logs to this last crash and append it later. I've also noticed that there is a master bug discussing the blacklisting of KMS for i855 (bug #511001). I will quote this particular bug in it. ** Attachment added: "Xorg log for a KMS enabled boot" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/44942636/Xorg.0.log -- Xorg crashes with 855GM on boot: Failed to submit batchbuffer: Input/output error https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/565870 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 541492] Re: MASTER: [i845] GPU lockup (apport-crash) (Should KMS be blacklisted?)
I posted about the current status of the 8xx problems onto the i855 master bug, and it's equally relevant to i845. It bears repeating here though: take care to know that this bug is very conditions sensitive, so what might appear to "fix" it for you might not fix it for another user with identical hardware to you, and might cause massive breakage to someone else. There aren't going to be silver bullets here, but there'll be plenty of lead. I find Michael's observation that 2.8.0 resolved it quite interesting, and would like to hear other 8xx owner's findings when reverting to that. Might give another way to work around the problems, and/or a lead on what caused them to begin with. Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 541511] Re: MASTER: [i855] GPU lockup (apport-crash)
We don't need further confirmations from people seeing the issue. Also, we don't need further reports of how it was worked around; we know there's several ways of working around it. Unfortunately what works for one person doesn't for another. This has been an extremely frustrating bug from a developer perspective, probably almost as frustrating as it is from a user perspective. It seems whenever we make a change to fix something for one set of users, it just causes breakage for some other set. There does not seem to be any particular combination of knob settings that makes things functional for *all* users. So what we've opted to do is turn off KMS for this hardware but pretty much leave all other settings to defaults. So people for whom this configuration works will have 3D and all the usual -intel functionality, just not the boot prettiness. For the set of users that find this is not a good configuration, we've documented the issue in the release notes with a link to the various workarounds people have found, here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Bugs/Lucidi8xxFreezes If anyone discovers additional workarounds, or has ideas on improving this documentation, please feel welcome to edit this page. It may help your fellow 8xx users. It is our hope that there will come to be upstream fixes that are viable to backport. If we get enough fixes that we feel confident, we *might* re-enable KMS for 8xx chips on lucid at some point. There are likely to be a lot of patches flying around. If you wish to provide them in a PPA, that's cool. Just be mindful that our goal ultimately is to get a fix into Lucid, and time you can put towards that goal could help a lot. The nature of this bug is such that it's really sensitive to conditions. So you may find a configuration or patch that makes the issue totally go away on your system and someone else's, but breaks things on 3 other people's systems with exactly the same hardware. So getting a patch that fixes it for *everyone* is going to be really tough. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 550625] Re: Alps touchpad is recognized but neither gsynaptics nor mouse preferences work
I've uploaded a new version of the psmouse module to http://people.canonical.com/~cndougla/550625/v2/. This version of the module adds the ALPS_PASS option for this hardware. The ALPS_PASS option must be enabled or disabled properly or else absolute events will not be enabled. My hope is that by using this option the absolute events will work once again. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 567621] [NEW] X11 does not start (except in safe graphics) with update to kernel 2.6.32-21 Generic
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg Been running Lucid in a separate partition from my 9.10 since Beta release. The X team has been trying to fix a screen blanking bug (reported) which results in a blank (though lit) screen lockup if I close the lid and reopen it. which was introduced in 9.04 just two weeks prior to the release of 9.10.. The developers finally, a week ago (~April 13) started to address this problem. The screen would blank but restore itself imperfectly (all icons and menu item are blank, but I can see the menu outlines as well as text in my Chrome browser, but I need to log out and back in to regain screen normalcy. At the same time, I noticed that 3d graphics was almost immediately failing and screen was reverting to 2d. Attempting to turn on Compiz resulted in the message "driver not found". The update on Saturday the 17 with some more Xorg driver patches and a new kernal 2.6.32-21 resulted in a blank screen after the new Ubutnu orange logo comes up with the 5 (?) red progress dots filled below it. The screen then blanks and then all disk activity ceases. This is where the login menu is supposed to show up. I can boot perfectly in failsafe graphics mode. lsb_release -rd info: Description: Ubuntu lucid (development branch) Release: 10.04 Computer: Dell Latitude X300 Twiddling with the safe graphics mode and trying to start X manually results in a blank screen the same as a normal boot. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 565482] Re: suggests a package not in Ubuntu
That is something which Debian put in, I don't believe it is something we need. Mine is thick flashing VERTICAL lines in the upper part of the screen. Another interesting note, almost always on the reboot the /tmp directory reports orphaned inodes 17, 16, 15, 13 and 12. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 565883] Re: [R350] screen corruption on 9800SE
Even without Visual Effects, the radeon driver uses acceleration on the card (EXA, composite etc), so some corruption can be seen. This acceleration is not used if fglrx is blocking, or if you are using the vesa driver ("failsafe"). With compiz it will use hw acceleration for the whole screen, that's why you see it all over. Did you have any corruption with an older version using fglrx? If not, there is probably a bug in the ati radeon driver. If you did not see corruption in older releases with ati radeon, it could be because it did not use much hw acceleration features at the time. -- [R350] screen corruption on 9800SE https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/565883 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-ati in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 566896] Re: [feature request] mapping of minimized windows
apport information ** Tags added: apport-collected ** Description changed: Binary package hint: xorg Using desktop effects (Compiz Fusion) in Ubuntu I like to have an overview about running applications and windows. For this i use the Scale plugin. Unfortunately it doesn't shows all my open applications, this is because they are minimized. I would like to be showed all windows, not dependent whether I minimized them before. As I understand from various old forum threads this behaviour is more or less by design, because the mapping for minimized windows is removed and there is nothing Compiz Fusion could show.
