[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 554980] Re: two finger scroll/multitouch not working on lenovo thinkpad w510 having SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad..

2010-07-13 Thread Jeff Epstein
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 308191 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/308191

Everyone wants Ubuntu to be as good as it can be. Idealistic notions
aside, the fact is that there is a limited amount of manpower to attend
to these bugs. So, in the interest of expediting a fix that will be
adequate to the largest number of users, I'll compare these bugs:

bug 554980 can be fixed with a simple patch to gnome-mouse-properties.
In fact, it was working in Jaunty, and this represents a regression.
Multitouch emulation is in the system, it works, and it simply needs a
GUI to activate it. This could even be done in lucid-updates.

bug 308191 touches a lot of packages and much of the required code isn't
deployed. There is no way this can be done in Lucid and probably not
even in Maverick. Even with a far-off, allegedly superior solution that
would resolve bug 308191, the user experience would be exactly the same
as if we fixed bug 554980. Genuine multitouch and multitouch emulation,
at this point, are indistinguishable to an end user. And while "expert
bug fixers" are spending time on a more difficult solution, they are
neglecting other, far more serious, bugs.

So, we have to choose: if we value a user experience, which enables two-
fingered scrolling in the near future, let's fix this bug. If we want to
spend years in development creating the ultimate solution, while users
get a sub-par operating system, then let's ignore this bug and focus on
308191.

In any case, this is not at all my decision to make. I'm just a user to
would like to have a solution that works as soon as possible. If the
Ubuntu community decides otherwise, so be it.

That's my last word on the subject.

Can you please run "dmesg > dmesg.txt" and attach dmesg.txt after trying

The second line (classic driver) can be debugged with gdb like this:

and then follow the backtrace instructions as you did earlier.

We should not mark this bug as duplicate, only if the solution of this
bug is in a different way. So separate developer will take on this which
is not desirable.

Further Jeff, we wish to provide user all the features that their
hardware provide in a best possible way. So if someone is not able to
control screen brightness, and files a bug, changing colors from the
Nvidia panel may be a temporary relief(which may provide the same
effect) but still not solution as this alternative solution consumes
more battery power. When hardware vendors introduce features in hardware
that has a emulation possible through software, we should trust them,
that they did it for the good and surely for the better possible
outcome.

2010-07-13 Thread Gursimran singh Mohar
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 308191 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/308191

Jeff: Bug reports are not just like forums where users diagnose just
their own machines on expert advice but much more. These are used by bug
fixers to fully eliminate the problem in future versions of Ubuntu. I
truly agree to your point, you have provided your workaround and that
could be a big relief to people here but it should be marked as a
duplicate for two reasons :

1. Workarounds are not solutions, only temporary relief to user who want
to use multitouch on their laptops. But to make Ubuntu better the bug
has to be dealt by expert bug fixers. Such duplicate bugs helps them to
look at various different hardware configuration where the problem
exist.

2. As we group all the possible bug reports together, the bug reporters
will themselves look at similar other bug reports and may find a useful
solution themselves. This happens many times. This way your solution may
also help may others and not just here.

I don't quite see how that could happen - the gpu hook creates the whole
apport report in one go, and I don't see where it would get munged
between there and here.

My guess this could happen if the crash was during *suspend* and we
caught the GPU errors before suspend and the Xorg log from after
suspend? No, that doesn't quite work. Timezone?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 425160] Re: compiz.real crashed with SIGSEGV in glXBindTexImageEXT()

2010-07-13 Thread Luke J Militello
I hate sounding like a broken record, down talking the community and the
last thing I want to do is sound like an @$$hole, but this is sort of
what I wanted to here. That this IS confirmed as an issue with NVidia
and not and issue with compiz itself. If that is the case, that's all
someone had to say. Wish I would have gotten a straight answer like
this months ago. Guess I'll just keep updating NVidia drivers until,
hopefully, one fixes it. I greatly appreciate your reply and for taking
the time to explain it. Thanks! :)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 605124] Re: [965gm] "No screens" on startup: "DRM_IOCTL_I915_GEM_APERTURE failed: Bad file descriptor"

2010-07-13 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
** Description changed:

I just installed Maverick on a partition yesterday. Sometimes (i.e. 2
- out of 5 or 6 times so far) when booting with an external monitor
- attached I get a "no screens" error in the log and get xorg in low-
- graphics mode. I haven't seen this so far when booting without an
- external monitor, but I haven't tried many times yet. I booted with
- kernel option drm.debug=0x04 so there should be verbose mode setting
- information in the dmesg output.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 605160] [NEW] Password entry box not displayed with OpenGL screensavers

2010-07-13 Thread Rich Morgan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

When I'm using an OpenGL screensaver and check the 'Lock screen when
screensaver is active' option, the password entry box does not appear
when I move the mouse or press a key. However, when I type my password
it works even though it is not visible. The password entry box appears
correctly when using non-OpenGL screen savers.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 605124] Re: [965gm] "No screens" on startup: "DRM_IOCTL_I915_GEM_APERTURE failed: Bad file descriptor"

2010-07-13 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
I saw the line
Pid: 343, comm: plymouthd Not tainted 2.6.35-7-generic #12-Ubuntu
7764CTO/7764CTO
in the dmesg output, so I tried to remove the kernel options "quiet splash",
but to no avail. dmesg looks the same to me, but is attached.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 605124] Re: [965gm] "No screens" on startup: "DRM_IOCTL_I915_GEM_APERTURE failed: Bad file descriptor"

2010-07-13 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

I just installed Maverick on a partition yesterday. Sometimes (i.e. 2
out of 5 or 6 times so far) when booting with an external monitor
attached I get a "no screens" error in the log and get xorg in low-
graphics mode. I haven't seen this so far when booting without an
external monitor, but I haven't tried many times yet. I booted with
kernel option drm.debug=0x04 so there should be verbose mode setting
  information in the dmesg output.
+
+ When the problem occurs, dmesg says:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 605153] [NEW] [i945gme] GPU lockup 0cd910c0 (PGTBL_ER: 0x00000103)

2010-07-13 Thread Pete Goodall
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

To be honest, I don't know whether this is a duplicate or not. The
string after "PGTBL_ER:" didn't match anything, so I'm reporting this as
new. I can't give you symptoms because afaict nothing went wrong.
Please let me know if you need more debugging information. This is a
fresh install of Ubuntu 10.10 Alpha 2 + updates to today - 14 July 2010.

It turns out that this can happen also without an external monitor
attached, so I will remove that part of the description. I will upload
dmesg and Xorg.0.log, for a bad and fine session.

Sense:

I agree that a more thorough solution is better, and it's not for me to
say how Ubuntu should allocate human resources. But for users, like me,
who just want to be able to scroll with two fingers, there is a solution
today that works, whereas a comprehensive multitouch solution, touching
on kernel, drivers, desktop environment, and applications, is months or
years away.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 605126] [NEW] LIBGL_DRIVERS_PATH is missing /usr/lib32/dri on amd64

2010-07-13 Thread Scott Ritchie
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

Several users running Wine are reporting that GL is not working for them
on this driver and that they are instead getting software rendering
(which Wine now helpfully warns about):
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/wine1.2/+bug/506320

Wine needs the 32 bit version of the dri library to be useful, however
it seems that this folder is not exported in the path.

2010-07-13 Thread Gursimran singh Mohar
Still you can have a patch that can fix your button mappings for now.
After you upload the pic the next kernel may support it automatically as
we can put this in a wishlist ...

For that please upload xev outputs again of both of you clicks in
seperate comments.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 554980] Re: two finger scroll/multitouch not working on lenovo thinkpad w510 having SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad..

2010-07-13 Thread Sense Hofstede
Jeff: Although your suggestions could indeed provide a reasonably
working workaround for some users, it is not the preferred way for
fixing this problem.

Although it can indeed by useful for the reporter to work around the problem
with the configuration files, we shouldn't consider providing only one feature
of multi-touch support via emulation using this configuration. There are two
reasons for this:
1) We would have to recognise multi-touch somehow anyway, otherwise we can't
enable emulation when it is expected.
2) Using software emulation of a feature that should be supported by the
(kernel) driver is not how we want things to work in Ubuntu. This issue should
be solved properly, and that means it is indeed a duplicate of bug #308191.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 605124] [NEW] [965gm] "No screens" on startup: "DRM_IOCTL_I915_GEM_APERTURE failed: Bad file descriptor"

2010-07-13 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

I just installed Maverick on a partition yesterday. Sometimes (i.e. 2
out of 5 or 6 times so far) when booting with an external monitor
attached I get a "no screens" error in the log and get xorg in low-
graphics mode. I haven't seen this so far when booting without an
external monitor, but I haven't tried many times yet. I booted with
kernel option drm.debug=0x04 so there should be verbose mode setting
information in the dmesg output.

:0.log says:

2010-07-13 Thread Tormod Volden
Yes, there is a small risk you get an unstable system until you
reinstall the default mesa packages again. But in most cases you can log
in with "failsafe Gnome session" or "failsafe terminal" which will not
start compiz (the mesa libraries are hardly used in this case) so that
you can reinstall the default packages. Of course if you don't feel
confident about it, don't do it.

I am not sure testing in a virtual box will be good enough since these
drivers work closely against the hardware. But you can of course try
that first since it is very safe.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 596819] Re: Failsafe X displays variable name instead of file name for debugging tarball

2010-07-13 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
The problem is in line 177 of debian/local/Failsafe/failsafeXinit. There
is an \ before the $ in $xorg_backup_file which shouldn't be there.
Since there is an eval_gettext at the beginning, the varable name was
probably supposed to be part of the preceding string. So either remove
the \ or do everything in one string as in the attached diff, which I
have tested (at least in English).

I hope this is close enough to a patch.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 596819] Re: Failsafe X displays variable name instead of file name for debugging tarball

2010-07-13 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
I can now confirm this myself. I have installed a Maverick partition and
got a "no screens" when booting with an external monitor attached and X
in low-graphics mode. Thanks to Glen for already finding out where the
failsafeX-backup-tar went.

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xorg

  As reported in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-
video-intel/+bug/589940/comments/3 , when failsafe X is triggered by
using the nomodeset kernel option on intel hardware (which leads to an
expected failure on Maverick), the failsafe X dialog displays:

Relevant configuration and log files have been saved to:
- $xorg_backup_file
+   $xorg_backup_file

In this particular case the expected behaviour is that $xorg_backup_file
should have been expanded to /var/log/failsafeX-backup-100619201009.tar.
-
- I haven't tried to reproduce this, since I currently don't have Maverick
- installation up and running.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 425160] Re: compiz.real crashed with SIGSEGV in glXBindTexImageEXT()

2010-07-13 Thread Hans Riba
Luke,

two things:

1.) I also have that issue, but on a Debian system. Todays up-to-date
sid, but having it since half a year or so. Very annoying.

2.) The nvidia drivers are NOT open source. Fixing of this bug solely
depends on the mercy of NVIDIA. This sucks and this is why this
proprietary crap sucks. If it were open source, Ubuntu or Debian or
other people could help you. Now they can't. Blame it on NVIDIA. (Or,
indirectly, on Ubuntu, for including this crap. By not including it, the
pressure on NVIDIA would be higher to release the stuff as open source,
which would have ultimately already fixed this issue. For all of us.)

Perfect, thanks for your patience. It would be useful to know if this still
happens with latest upstream. To test this you can get the mesa packages from
https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/radeon and test both using:
 LIBGL_DRIVERS_DIR=/usr/lib/dri /usr/lib/xscreensaver/pipes
(for gallium drivers) and
 LIBGL_DRIVERS_DIR=/usr/lib/dri-classic /usr/lib/xscreensaver/pipes
(for classic drivers).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 588877] Re: Thinkpad T510 [NVS 3100M] display brightness can't be changed

2010-07-13 Thread Dave Chiluk
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 540112 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/540112

Workaround available here
http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Category:W510

"To enable brightness control in X, append 'Option "RegistryDwords"
"EnableBrightnessControl=1"' to the Device-Section of xorg.conf, orginal
source:
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=2204839#post2204839.
This may result in a high-pitched whine after lowering the brightness
within X. Brightness may not be lowered and raised in the same
increments on Archlinux."

Happy brightness adjusting.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 585651] Re: [LUCID] Cannot install on eDP laptops such as HP Elitebook 2540p or 8440p

2010-07-13 Thread henk
My experiences on a Dell E6510:
2.6.32-24-generic from Steve: does not work
2.6.35-7-generic from https://launchpad.net/~kernel-ppa/+archive/ppa: works
2.6.32.15+drm33.5 + patch from
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=28070: works
2.6.31-14-generic from karmic: works, but unstable
stock 2.6.34.1 + patch from https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=28070:
works

So the patch seems to work, but somehow not in combination with Steve's
kernel.
