[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 636311] Re: Keyboard special keys interfere with mouse

2010-12-06 Thread Daniel d'Andrada
> @Daniel: Does your keyboard have an "F-lock" key like mine? If so,
check that it's on.

You're right. Thomas. I forgot about this key. It's been such a long time since
I last pressed it. :-)
Everything is working fine then.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 686340] [NEW] xorg using intel 11 Gb of virtual memory

2010-12-06 Thread Luis Alves
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEMTIME+ COMMAND

1177 root 20 0 11.4g 20m 5956 S2 0.5 31:22.37 Xorg

I'm sure how to collect data for this, I left my eclipse running for
some time,

$ uptime
 22:06:24 up 2 days, 7:17, 4 users, load average: 0.26, 0.40, 0.76

and My xorg server is running with 11.4Gb of virtual memory.

Is there a way to capture more information, to fix this problem.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 524281] Re: Tens of wakes per second in "[kernel scheduler] Load balancing tick" on Core 2 Duo even with only 1 core enabled

2010-12-06 Thread Alex Vandiver
The commit to backport would be 83cd4fe, which has many more changes
than just to kernel/time/tick-sched.c You can look at the complete diff
at https://github.com/mirrors/linux-2.6/commit/83cd4fe

af5ab27 might also help somewhat, but I believe the other one is the
major culprit.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 655078] Re: Beta 10.10 Nvidia update broke Sony Vaio VPCF136FM installation

2010-12-06 Thread smileyguy
Mike,

Thanks for info. I do appreciate it. Actually I have printed out the
parts of this thread that I thought was important. And #77 was one of
them I took. I have the print out in my computer bag just in case. And I
have the bug number memorized as I am sure a lot of others do as well.
Over the course of this issue I have learned a lot more about Ubuntu and
that is nice too. Windows is a bane on Mankind.

Mike, thanks to you for the terrific effort you put forth on this. I
greatly appreciate it.

2010-12-06 Thread Michael E. Adams
Smileyguy,

All you have to do is run my script. Just follow my instructions given
in entry #77 above. I developed this script just in case I accidentally
did what you must have done, reinstalled the Nvidia update that breaks
my system (and I have had to use it). Just follow the instructions and
it will automatically download and install the correct Nvidia packages.

Regards,
Mike

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 670016] Re: Xorg crashes when performing gesture

2010-12-06 Thread Chase Douglas
Gustavo,

I began reviewing your work more closely to package it up for testing. I
realized that there are areas that are a little rough, as you noted. I
am in the process of cleaning it up.

As such, don't worry about updating your branches. I'll be proposing for
Maverick slightly different patches based on your work.

Thanks again!

haven't updated to handle the r300c DRI name used when UMS is used in
natty so the fallback to classic mesa isn't working. That's to be
expected at the moment, I have uploaded a new ati that doesn't include
that logic but you will still get swrast and no compiz until you stop
disabling KMS.

Yeah I can reproduce this by creating a liveusb with the persistent
storage space slider maxed out, it requires space on the fat32 file
system to manipulate the initramfs.

Comment #7 on bug #562312 sounds quite pertinent. Please review and see
if that describes the procedure you used to do your install?

2010-12-06 Thread Bryce Harrington
The way we determined it as an out of space issue, is Sarvatt reproduced
your problem on a USB stick by manually installing nvidia, and got the
error message that way:

 Setting up initramfs-tools (0.98.1ubuntu7) ...
 update-initramfs: deferring update (trigger activated)
 lzma: Encoder error: -2147467259
 dpkg: error processing initramfs-tools (--configure):
subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1
after sudo apt-get install nvidia-current from a terminal

He wasn't able to find the error message in any logs. Typical places to
look would be /var/log/dpkg.log or the make.log (found a couple levels
deep under /var/lib/dkms). You might poke around in your /var/log/ to
see if you can find an error message which indicates a problem other
than disk usage.

lzma error "-2147467259" means "no space to unpack the archive". See
bug #562312 as another example.

There is a possibility that you're not actually truly out of space at
all, it's just that the installer *thinks* there's not enough. Some
further analysis is needed to pinpoint the exact steps to reproduce the
issue. If you could do some additional testing to identify the steps,
that'd help move things forward faster.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 670016] Re: Xorg crashes when performing gesture

2010-12-06 Thread Gustavo Luiz Duarte
I've been using this code for a week without any crashes.
The crash frequency before this code was around 2 crashes a day.

I will remove the unused code as suggested by Chase. Any other suggestion is
welcome.
I know this code is not relevant for Natty, but if you guys intend to deliver
it as an update for Maverick I'd gladly help with whatever is needed.

Thank you guys for your help on doing this. I'm very happy now using
gestures without X crashes :-D

tried with both metacity and compiz and no difference.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 686164] Re: Compiz broken on radeon mobility

2010-12-06 Thread Travis Watkins
If you look at the glxinfo.txt attachment you can see the full output of
glxinfo and see that compiz is quite right, you lack proper support for
the GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap and are using the Software Rasterizer
(check the renderer string). I don't know if this is a configuration
issue on your system or a bug in the driver so I've reassigned to the
radeon driver. Please run `apport-collect 686164` to collect any
additional data needed for a complete report for the driver.

** Package changed: compiz (Ubuntu) => xserver-xorg-video-ati (Ubuntu)

DRI is running fine with radeon kernel module and kms. Glxgears runs
well with this driver

server glx version string: 1.4
server glx extensions:

The unity desktop sessions comes up with the "sorry, you don't have 3d
support" I get the gnome desktop after a few seconds, so fallback works
well. In compiz the module unity depends on composite and this depends
on opengl, so i get all 3 switched on. But then compiz is not starting
anymore.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 680811] Re: incorrect maximise behaviour with twinview

2010-12-06 Thread Per Heldal
The current Xorg-log (attached) shows that I'm running a non-standard
kernel (for audio) and updated nvidia-driver (260.19.26 is the first
vdpau-capable driver that seem reasonably free from memleaks with my
gtx260-card). The system does however behave the same with stock 10.10
packages.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 495553] Re: [K8M800] Maverick 10.10 live-CD login failure, ttyN screens don't work, on Averatec 3280 running Lucid

2010-12-06 Thread Peter Belew
I then set the res to 1024x768, using the System>Preferences/Monitor
dialog, and logged out and logged in (without rebooting the OS). This
time the screen came up in 1024x768 without the top panel, but showing
the bottom panel. I've attached yet another Xorg.0.log (-.log4) file.

THEN I rebooted completely. The login screen showed as 1600x1200, but
the final screen showed as 1024x768.

described."

Where exactly should there be sufficient disk space? The df output below shows
the free space right after I got the error:

2010-12-06 Thread Peter Belew
After that, I proceeded to log in. The screen came up in 1024x76 mode,
because I had previously set that resolution with the
System>Preferences>Monitors dialog.

So I used System>Preferences>Monitors to set the resolution to
1600x1200, and rebooted. After I logged in, the screen came up in
1600x1200, but the top panel didn't appear. I then retrieved the
Xorg.0.log file and have attached it (as Xorg.0.log2).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 686147] Re: package nvidia-current 260.19.21-0ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2010-12-06 Thread Robert Hooker
** Description changed:

- Installing nvidia-current via jockey on the natty alpha 1 livecd
+ Installing nvidia-current via jockey on the natty alpha 1 liveusb with
+ 1.2GB persistent storage.

When it tries to install I get these errors in dmesg

[ 276.442208] SQUASHFS error: zlib_inflate error, data probably corrupt
[ 276.442216] SQUASHFS error: squashfs_read_data failed to read block

Then a module-init-tools crash popup appears which I filed here where
  insmod fails with SIGBUS

  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/module-init-tools/+bug/686145

And this bug just appears to be fallout from the actual problem:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 495553] Re: [K8M800] Maverick 10.10 live-CD login failure, ttyN screens don't work, on Averatec 3280 running Lucid

2010-12-06 Thread Peter Belew
Hi Bartosz - I removed the xorg.conf file and rebooted. The login
background and login dialog appear in the 1600x1200 mode (note that the
grub2 screen appears properly, using a custom background I installed).

I've attached the Xorg.0.log file.

** Attachment added: "Xorg.0.log after booting without xorg.conf file."

2010-12-06 Thread Bryce Harrington
I'm adding a Jockey task because I think this needs fixed via better
installation space checking during installation by jockey.

But I'm leaving the -nvidia task open for now, for tracking/duping
purposes. I don't *think* there is anything we can change in -nvidia to
correct the bug, but until it's fixed we may see an increase number of
reports of failures along these lines.

Btw, note that while insufficient disk space can cause the "post-
installation script returned error" error, there may well be other
issues that lead to this same error message.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 685017] Re: Jockey should warn on insufficient disk space in LiveCD environment, else get error "package nvidia-current 260.19.21-0ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess in

2010-12-06 Thread Bryce Harrington
This issue has existed for some time, however in natty with Unity now
being the default interface users are shown a warning that they lack 3D.
This motivates them to try installing a binary driver via jockey.
Especially if they're just testing to kick the tires, they may attempt
to do so on media without sufficient space. Since for all NVIDIA owners
the LiveCD boots with nouveau (currently defaulted to 2D-only), a lot of
people will be encountering this particular bug work flow.

Because of this, I think the severity of this bug is critical.

** Description changed:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 524281] Re: Tens of wakes per second in "[kernel scheduler] Load balancing tick" on Core 2 Duo even with only 1 core enabled

2010-12-06 Thread Gurmeet
Just installed the 2.6.36 mainline kernel from http://kernel.ubuntu.com
/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.36-maverick/.

VMWare Player is not working, but that's another story.

[kernel scheduler] Load balancing tick = 2.3
[extra timer interrupt] = 11.7

Total interrupts under idle conditions = 66.7 (earlier it was ~180).

Ok, now we know the story, or at-least a part of it.
We will all be a happy breed of people if the fixes are back ported to the
latest stable release of Maverick from the Ubuntu repository. So if we do a
'sudo apt-get update && upgrade" we should get the patches applied and don't
have to fiddle with unsupported releases of the core of the OS.

I am keeping my fingers crossed. VMWare is not working as of now, PS/2
interrupts are still very high and might discover a thing or 2 later,
but as of now, with the 2.6.36, the issue seems to be resolved. Will
feel a lot more satisfied after the fixed version lands up through the
official repo on a officially supported release (2.6.35 at the moment).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 670016] Re: Xorg crashes when performing gesture

2010-12-06 Thread Chase Douglas
Gustavo,

Awesome work! How long have you been using this code, presumably without
any crashes? If things are working better, I think we'll probably try to
use your work. I think the server patch looks good, and the evdev patch
just needs to remove the unused code.

Thanks a bunch!

else?

In discussing this with Sarvatt, it sounds like while this has been a
long standing issue, the unity focus for natty makes this issue
especially important now since.

I hope you don't mind that we're going to use this bug report as a
master bug against jockey for adding checks for this particular
workflow. I'll be revising the description of the bug to focus on the
issue as we understand it.

** Summary changed:

How much persistent storage space do you have allocated? nvidia-current
needs quite a bit to install properly, it could be a case of just not
having enough available here.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 686120] [NEW] dual monitor: won't restore resolution after suspend/resume

2010-12-06 Thread Alexander Sychkov
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

I have a laptop with 2nd monitor connected to VGA port.

Steps:
1. Close the laptop, Ubuntu suspends.
2. Open the laptop. Unbutu successfully resumes.
3. Input password

Result:
resolution is 1024x768 on both monitors. Same image on both monitors.

Expected:
1600x900 on external monitor, 1366x768 on laptop monitor, as I set before
suspend+resume. Layout is the same as before suspend+resume.

Note:
When I boot the laptop with monitor connected, at login screen resolution and
layout is wrong, but as I log in, it sets automatically according to my
settings. I think the same must happen after suspend/resume. For now, I have to
maually set resolution every time, it's very bothering.

Just something I came across the other day: When you boot in recovery mode
and choose failsafeX in the upcoming menu the graphics actually run faster
than with Vesa on normal boot, no GLX though. I have to investigate that a
little further.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 665687] Re: Failed to initialize the nvidia-173 kernel module in Maverick

2010-12-06 Thread Sam Azer
FYI

- installed kubuntu 10.10 from scratch on the same notebook
- Used Jockey to activate the nvidia-173 driver.
- (Got a few delays and strange messages along the way, but...)
- found that nvidia 173 works fine.

The problem is therefore most likely to be an incompatibility or a
setting that does not exist in a vanilla 10.10 environment.

For everybody who is experiencing this bug I suggest a full set of
backups and a fresh installation is less time consuming than tinkering
with the 173 driver. Nouveau (from the beta PPA's) has improved
considerably over the past few weeks - it's really not bad at all - but
I missed some of the advanced 3d desktop effects. They're surprisingly
helpful.

hardware for a variety of LX platforms.

Please note that upstream is now up to version 2.11.10, which is still a

2010-12-06 Thread smileyguy
***UPDATE...to comment #86

I reran the fix in comment #86 again. I didn't do anything else but run
the fix. After I restarted X my beautiful 1920X1080 display came right
up...POW! I rebooted a couple of times...the computer worked fine. So I
got fat and sassy again and installed the Ubuntu restricted updates.
That worked ok too. So I did a warm boot and a cold boot and the
computer is running fine.

Me thinks folks with computers with this issue who have display
problems...just rerun the fix in #86. I am hoping this work around is
just that durable too. And I hope Ubuntu developers get around to
finally and correctly fixing this issue too.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 682864] Re: [GMA 4500MHD] Display freeze after VGA cable disconnected

2010-12-06 Thread Greg Grossmeier
On the suggestion of Sarvatt in #ubuntu-x I installed the ~ubuntu-x-swat
PPA and upgraded the xserver-xorg-video-intel package to
2:2.13.901-2ubuntu2~xup~maverick . He thought this bug was most likely
bug 626967.

It *may* be that bug, but, after restarting and hooking up a second
monitor my video is messed up. Sorry I forgot to take a screenshot
before reverting the package and restarting (I'm at work).

Description of the problem:
The external monitor's right hand side is displaying a vertical piece the
laptop's left hand output, about 1.5 inches on a 22" 1680x1050 monitor. The
output on the laptop looks fine.

Additionally, where the mouse appears to be on screen and what I
actually click on does not line up. When my mouse appears to be clicking
on a button, I'm actually clicking about 1.5 inches to the left. Or, in
another way, to click on a button I need to put my mouse 1.5 inches to
the right of that button.

I'm still game for debugging/installing new packages, just let me know!
