[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 765136] Re: [natty] X often crashes since upgrade to natty
Now I discovered (I haven't noticed it earlier since I rebooted the system more times per day) that it seems after a system boot, X seems to be unstable, however after an X crash (when gdm screen is redisplayed and I must relogin then) it seems to be stable then. I've tried to do the backtrace (with using NoTrapSignals in config file as it was suggested). The interesting thing that one time I got SIGINT and after I got the backtrace and I quited with gdb (it was attached to already running process with ssh'ing from another machine) X continued to work without any crash ... I re-attach gdb to X process and after some minutes I noticed the "true" problem (SIGQUIT) however the backtrace itself seems to be very similar only the signals are different. Anyway the result is attached (the other backtrace I was talking about is almost the same just it is SIGINT instead of SIGQUIT, I have checked it out with making diff between the traces). ** Attachment added: "gdb-Xorg-2.txt" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/765136/+attachment/2071826/+files/gdb-Xorg-2.txt -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/765136 Title: [natty] X often crashes since upgrade to natty ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that there was an error on your system when trying to install a particular package. Please execute the following command, as it will clear your package cache, in a terminal: sudo apt-get clean Then try performing the update again. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 232087] Re: Monitor disconnection needs to be automatically detected
This particular bug is now fixed. When the hardware and driver supports hotplug detection, this now works. Of course, the binary nvidia driver doesn't support hotplug detection, and there are a variety of hardware problems - it appears to be quite difficult to detect VGA hotplugs in hardware. Digital outputs are much easier, and hotplug/unplug works with the hardware I have access to. Where this doesn't work on some given hardware can be filed as driver- specific bugs. ** Changed in: xorg-server (Ubuntu) Status: Triaged => Fix Released -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/232087 Title: Monitor disconnection needs to be automatically detected ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 745639] Re: Xorg freezes with KMS, uses vesa without KMS
Hi BB, are you certain it's not just that unity got stuck? Try running `unity --reset` when it's in that situation. Since you say the freeze is gone, it may be better to file a new bug report, to minimize confusion. The safe desktop forces use of the vesa driver basically (that's pretty much it's purpose) so it's not really a bug that vesa is used in that situation, nor that unity has trouble running on it; it's meant to be a minimalistic driver. ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-ati (Ubuntu) Status: New => Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-ati in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/745639 Title: Xorg freezes with KMS, uses vesa without KMS ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

There was a 30-sec poll being done by upowerd that I chased down on another bug report and that got fixed recently; probably that also fixed it for you. ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-ati (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => Fix Released -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-ati in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/749347 Title: flicker on screen ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 751084] Re: gpu lockup at resume from hibernate
Alright, like I mentioned earlier hibernate issues generally tend to be kernel bugs, I'll go ahead and refile. I don't have further tips for debugging; you could try turning on drm debugging (install xdiagnose, it's the first checkbox; reboot for it to take effect and then collect 'dmesg'), which potentially might reveal something of interest. Hopefully the kernel guys can give you further guidance here. ** Package changed: xserver-xorg-video-ati (Ubuntu) => linux (Ubuntu) ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-ati in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/751084 Title: gpu lockup at resume from hibernate ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 745112] Re: [arrandale] desktop is messed up (goes black) when laptop is docked with two external 1920x1200 monitors (x86_64)
I added that ppa and updated, and did a bit more testing. It seemed to work a bit better, though not in the way I would have expected. classic/no-effects: I started undocked, and actually got docking once to work perfectly (both monitors lit up, desktop displayed on both). However when I undocked and re-docked again, my right monitor didn't light up (although I got my desktop on the left monitor). I was not able to get the right monitor to turn on again, after trying "xset dpms force on" , the gnome monitor GUI, going to tty1 and back, etc. This situation was stable after a couple more undock/redock cycles. I never got into the black screen/moving mouse pointer situation. The kernel log never showed any intel graphics related stuff (just USB devices appearing/disappearing and other docking related stuff). And i915_error_state stayed "no error state collected". unity: Again I actually got docking to work once; however the second time I docked, I got the black screen/moving mouse pointer and right monitor stuck with no signal. However neither the kernel log nor the error_state file showed anything. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/745112 Title: [arrandale] desktop is messed up (goes black) when laptop is docked with two external 1920x1200 monitors (x86_64) ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

"black screen with mouse" is almost key words for "GPU lockup". Check your dmesg when it's in that state for error messages (or just post here and I can look for you). Also snag your /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/i915_error_state file, which can have error codes in this case. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 766647] [NEW] Natty - Windows MCE remote triggering events to lirc and as a keyboard making mythtv frontend unusable
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg Due to a recent change in either X or the kernel, my media center remote is now being picked up as a keyboard, as well as lirc. Therefore when using mythtvfrontend, boxee, xbmc I the cursor moves twice for every keypress. I have temporarily resolved the issue by disabling lirc - but this means that the OK button which is mapped to keycode 352 is not picked up by X - I guess this is because it is over 255. If I could remap 'ok' to the enter key - my problems would be solved - but I dont have a clue how to do this. I imagine a lot of other people will experience similar issues once 11.04 is released - so it would be useful if the re-mapping could be implemented as part of the ubuntu release. Please feel free to re-assign this bug - I wasnt sure where to send it. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 748137] Re: unity rendering broken with fglrx (black masks)
Yes, does not surprise me, basically I suspect it comes down to the fact that your ATI chip set is not functional enough with the Xorg radeon driver to run Unity .Also like my R690M you will not be supported by the ATI fglrx driver (anything older than R600 is not supported in current releases). My R690M should work but has a driver bug and now defaults back to classic Gnome. Previously it ran Unity but became unusable because of the bug and the screen corruption it caused. I suspect a ppa daily release of Unity \ Compiz triggered this change in behavior so I can not even get the screen corruption. I have not found any work around / manual config of xorg.conf to get unity working. If I do I will post and let you know. In the past I used a kernel parameter radeon.modeset=0 in my grub.conf and managed to get compiz cube working with the radeon driver and a manual xorg.conf. You could try that. I have yet to see anything that Unity does that does seems radically any more demanding than running Compiz Cube! Its worth persevering as Unity has some really great features. I am even managing to run it as my desktop default on a 24In Monitor! :-) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to fglrx-installer in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/748137 Title: unity rendering broken with fglrx (black masks) ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 733374] Re: X freeze, nvidia-current, Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick
I switched to the open source 'nv' driver present by default (by manually editing xorg.conf). I don't need fancy graphics. All I need is a dual monitor setup and I got that working through the generic System ->Preferences-Monitors configuration utility. It detected the monitors just fine and let me choose a dual monitor configuration. Pretty neat. I wish the nvidia-current driver was better. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 745112] Re: [arrandale] desktop is messed up (goes black) when laptop is docked with two external 1920x1200 monitors (x86_64)
Hi Roland, thanks for the quick response. Regarding your clarification, yes despite how it may seem, "blank screen with moving mouse cursor and X not responding to input, but network login works" is the prototypical set of symptoms that go with a GPU hang. The kernel itself is ok, which is why you can ssh in; the mouse cursor is handled far enough outside the core of X that it is often unaffected by lockups (not always though). Often when you have a GPU lockup, there will be an error message in your 'dmesg' output. The file /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/i915_error_state often displays error codes when the GPU is locked up. In fact, if you could reproduce the bug with the classic/no-effects case and attach both of those here, it might give us some more clue what's going wrong. Or, at least, it gives me plenty of info to take upstream. Regarding the second conflating bug (which I suspect might be a DPMS bug in the kernel's arrandale code), I've a PPA you could try to see if it at least improves that situation: https://launchpad.net/~bryce/+archive/elderberry -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/745112 Title: [arrandale] desktop is messed up (goes black) when laptop is docked with two external 1920x1200 monitors (x86_64) ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 745112] Re: [arrandale] desktop is messed up (goes black) when laptop is docked with two external 1920x1200 monitors (x86_64)
Bryce, first off, sorry for mistyping your name ;) I did a bit more testing, and I tried the classic/no effects login again. If I start undocked and dock, I do get the black screen/responsive mouse pointer. However, if I log in with classic/no effects *and* do "xrandr --output LVDS1 --off" and then dock, one monitor lights up with a real desktop (ie it seems to work). The second monitor was off, but I was able to get it to light back up by going to a text console and back to X. (I guess this is the second conflating bug you mentioned). Hi Bryce, I tried the -debug version of xserver-xorg-video-intel: - Boot the system - Install the .deb - restart X (sudo gdm stop; sudo gdm start from the console) Behavior is still the same :( I tried with the gnome-display-properties applet, xrandr --auto, and the machine's hotkey (which still causes some flickering like things are being set up) but nothing actually comes up on the external display :( Let me know if you want to see the Xorg.log files, but I didn't see anything interesting in them. Bruce, thanks for all the info. I will do some more testing today. One clarification though: when I get in the black screen + mouse pointer situation, my machine is not hung. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 752445] Re: Intermittent white window contents when maximizing/switching windows
It's may be inapropriate to write this here, but I do not understand why: - This bug status is "Incomplete", and not "Confirmed" (there is 18 people saying they are affected, and two duplicated bugs...) - Its Importance is "Undecided" despite the fact that its even impossible to open "Control center" (too big so it's white, and can't resize). - Also, "This bug report will be marked for expiration in 58 days if no further activity occurs" But there is activity, people are reporting/commenting this bug. Any idea why? I know we are in Beta 2 (old name for RC), but I'm worried because final release is in less than 10 days, and nothing seems to change on this (major) issue. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 761236] Re: [Arrandale] unable to correctly enable monitors connected to VGA - results in flickering screen (x86_64 )
Hi Andres, There have been a bunch of bugs filed about Arrandale with external monitors causing trouble. I've only seen one other bug where a flickering screen resulted (lp #758785), although the symptoms differed. I posted a few random ideas to that bug report to test out, I'm going to post a couple other random ideas here for you to try: a) I've prepared a PPA which adds a DPMS on to the X driver. Please install this and then see if you can reproduce the bug: https://launchpad.net/~bryce/+archive/elderberry b) Upstream is staging several patches including some Ironlake/Arrandale fixes to one of their kernel drm branches. It would probably help them if you could test these before we forward this bug report to them. If you wish (and know how), you can build the kernel manually: http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/ickle/drm-intel.git (branch drm-intel-next-proposed). If you don't know or don't wish to manually build the kernel, I'm asking the kernel team to start doing automatic daily builds of this tree; stay tuned and there will be .debs available of it probably within a day or two. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/761236 Title: [Arrandale] unable to correctly enable monitors connected to VGA - results in flickering screen (x86_64 ) ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 758785] Re: [arrandale] Display flickers or blank on login (x86_64)
Hmm. I've been looking at a number of other bug reports with Arrandale and external monitor troubles. There definitely seems to be a modesetting bug that _appears_ to be particular to arrandale (at least, the reports I've looked at are mostly all arrandale systems). However, the symptoms in those cases are quite different from yours - the screen becomes blank in one set of cases, or the X server locks up unrecoverably in the other set. I'm going to treat your bug as unrelated to those, although it couldn't hurt for you to run some of the same tests I'm having those others do, just to see if it turns up anything interesting. As to your question, monitors.xml gets generated by the gnome-display- properties applet when you Apply your settings. That applet is backed by a daemon process, gnome-settings-daemon, which I suspect may also write out the current monitor settings to monitors.xml during shut down (I'm not certain, but I think it does). The Fn+F7 key I believe is also tied into the above and handled by gnome-settings-daemon. However, historically there's been a lot of different services that have handled that hotkey, so it would probably be clearer if we could focus on a test case for reproducing the issue that didn't involve key hits. This is why I suggest trying to repro it with just the xrandr command. If you run it from console you may have to do it like "DISPLAY=:0 xrandr --auto" or even specify the outputs (see man xrandr for some examples). Here are some other things to test, sorry this is kind of a grab bag of random ideas: * After reproducing the issue, run `xset dpms force on`. (If this works, it suggests a DPMS issue) * Install xdiagnose and use that to turn on Debug Messages (the first checkbox). Reboot, reproduce the bug, and then (from an ssh session or console) collect the output of the command 'dmesg > dmesg.txt' and attach dmesg.txt here. * Disable the VESA framebuffer from loading. This can also be done via the xdiagnose tool. * Can you describe the flicker in more detail? Can you approximate the frequency it is running at? If it is flickering at a regular rate it can suggest some other process (e.g. upowerd) may be polling the monitor; if so, killing that process may stop the flickering. (I'm doubtful of this because simply doing Fn+F7 wouldn't be enough to stop the polling; still, may be worth checking.) * You indicated this did not occur with your maverick installation. This suggests testing if you can boot on the old maverick kernel (go into grub during boot by holding down the left shift key; if it's still installed you can select the 2.6.35 kernel, if not you'll need to install it manually) and test if the issue is reproducible. (If this works, then a git bisection effort might be able to isolate what kernel change introduced the problem.) ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/758785 Title: [arrandale] Display flickers or blank on login (x86_64) ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 766510] [NEW] Fonts and UI elements have artifacts around them and look bad
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg I did a fresh install of the 11.04 beta on a new Intel Sandy Bridge system with integrated graphics. The overall problem is that UI elements that are drawn just look bad, especially around the edges. If you look at the attached screenshot you can see the problem in the fonts, especially when they are not just black against a white background. Also you can see a bad looking halo around the mouse cursor. And look at the icons in the upper right of the screen. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 756624] Re: [pineviewgm] black screen attaching external monitor (x86_64)
Hi Fabio, I don't know what causes this bug, but have some ideas. Can you do the following three tests, which should hopefully narrow down how/where this is failing? a. Boot into "Classic Desktop (No Effects)" and see if you can reproduce the issue. (If not, this might be just a max texture size issue.) b. Install xdiagnose, and turn on Debugging Messages (the first checkbox). Reboot the system, reproduce the bug, and then run the command 'dmesg > dmesg.txt' and attach dmesg.txt to this bug report. (This will help give better diagnositcs.) c. Find another external monitor of a different model, and see if the issue can be reproduced with that monitor as well. (If not, then this may be an EDID issue with the particular monitor.) Also, a few general questions I would appreciate your answers on: * You mentioned "gnome crashed" - how are you determining that it was gnome that crashed? (I'm suspecting that actually what you saw might be a kernel gpu lockup rather than a crash). * It looks like you upgraded on March 21st from maverick. Is this correct? Did the external monitor work properly before the upgrade? Did it ever work after the upgrade prior to when you filed this report? (I.e., is this a recent regression or a regression between maverick->natty?) ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu) Status: New => Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/756624 Title: [pineviewgm] black screen attaching external monitor (x86_64) ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 765769] [NEW] thinkpad t400 keys hang randomly
You have been subscribed to a public bug: i have a thinkpad t400 and ubuntu 10.10. sometimes when i enter a text, any key starts hanging and repeats some time. for example i would get: halloo this happens in terminal, thunderbird, firefox etc. same thing happened when i wanted to delete e-mails in thunderbird. i pressed the del-key and it hang and deleted 400 e-mails. very good that there is a trash folder. ;-) if i can provide you any information to make it easier finding the bug, please tell me. daniel ** Affects: xorg (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- thinkpad t400 keys hang randomly https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/765769 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg in Ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 756257] Re: package fglrx 2:8.723.1-0ubuntu5 failed to install/upgrade: fglrx kernel module failed to build
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 754799] Re: [arrandale] external VGA output doesn't output anything (i686)
Hi Bryce, the xset trick doesn't seem to work :( here's what I did: 1- Start up the system without the external monitor plugged in. 2- Plug in the monitor, external display shows nothing, but it's visible gnome-display-properties. 3- issue command xset dpms force on. Nothing happens :( the external display still thinks the VGA cable is not connected, BUT the computer thinks the display is connected. Actually I launched a few terminal windows and they all went to the external display (which isn't showing anything so I thought they were failing to start). If I press the terminal icon in the Unity bar, I get an overview of the windows that were sent to the external display but I still can't see them. Thanks for suggesting this test! ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu Natty) Status: Incomplete => New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/754799 Title: [arrandale] external VGA output doesn't output anything (i686) ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
