[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 763005] Re: Compiz's "Sync to Vblank" makes display stutter/slow with fglrx

2012-01-26 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Sorry, but publishing PPA packages for precise would unlikely be worth
the effort. I fully expect precise will have compiz 0.9.7 within a
month, which would supersede a PPA. But "a month" is just a guess, not
an official statement of any sort.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 415357]

2012-01-26 Thread Simon Schubert
Ah. I believe this is the problem, or at least very closely related:

:
if (clip2 != 0 || drawLast)
len++;

in combination with these variables:

new_x1 = 36
new_x2 = 0
new_y1 = 16
new_y2 = 0
clip2 = 10
len = 37

This incremented len to 37, extending (in reverse) the line below (0,
0), which leads to a segmentation fault.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 415357]

2012-01-26 Thread Simon Schubert
Ok, I see what is going on there.

The len++ is to make the end coordinates inclusive, which they should be
if drawLast is set, or if we clipped the end.

Now, we changed the end coordinates, but we keep the Bresenham error
terms, because we want the same angle (I suppose).

However, if we look at fbBresSolid, we see this sequence:

while (len--)
{
...
/// (1) ///
WRITE(dst, FbDoMaskRRop (READ(dst), and, xor, bits));
bits = 0;
dst += signdx;
...
e += e1;
/// (2) ///
if (e >= 0)
{
/// (3) ///
WRITE(dst, FbDoMaskRRop (READ(dst), and, xor, bits));
bits = 0;
dst += dstStride;
e += e3;
}
}

Now assume we have arrived at len = 1. We start the last iteration for
the last pixel, at (x2,y2). We draw the pixel (location (1)), and we
*should* be done. However, because of the previously unmodified
Bresenham error terms, it can happen that the error total overflows
(location (2)), and we will draw another pixel, now at (x2+signdx,y2),
before adjusting the error terms and exiting the loop.

In short, it might happen that (I'm using signdx=-1, just because my
case happens to be that way):

- (orig_x2, orig_y2) get clipped
- the algorithm then goes on to draw:

(x1,y1), (x1-1,y1), ..., (x2,y2), (x2-1,y2)

Now, if x2 = 0, y2 = 0, then we overshoot into negative address land
(-1,0) and might segfault (actually do).

Solutions
=

I don't directly see how this could be fixed:

a) Check dst for every Bresenham error pixel, but that seems excessive.
b) Adjust the error terms, but that would change the slope of the line
(slightly)
c) Check for this case in advance and reduce len, but then you'd lose one pixel
at the end
d) Rewrite fbseg to draw the error pixel in the next iteration, instead of in
the same. This touches central code though.

HP dm4t (ATI 5470), after several installs last weekend - bug no longer present
in Xubuntu 11.10 stock, also not present after upgrade to kernel 3.2.0-10. It
was still present with LinixMint Debian Edition stock (at that moment 2.6
kernel), but after upgrade to latest kernel it was fixed.
In fact I have not seen this for some months now, but I did a clean reinstall
just in order to check it.

I haven't seen it since running that patch for a few days, with
several disconnect/reconnect cycles. It was never 100% reproducible.

I have a separate upstream bug

provide that info soon.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 829086]

2012-01-26 Thread Kenxeth
Closing this bug. We believe the primary issue here is fixed in the
Linux 3.2 kernel, and many people seem to agree. I'm guessing most of
the people who had trouble were either trying to use intel_reg_write had
trouble patching the kernel.

It sounds like a few people still have rendering glitches in various
apps; feel free to open new bug reports and we'll take a look at them.
I think that will be clearer and more useful for everyone than keeping
this bug report open. Thanks for your patience.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 922268] [NEW] Xorg freeze

2012-01-26 Thread filthpig
Public bug reported:

Upon boot the Ubuntu bootscreen appears, but then disappears again
leaving me hanging somewhere around "* Starting CPU interrupts balancing
daemon [OK]".. Sometimes sooner, sometimes later. But I've yet to see
my login screen or any X activity at all. I've tried with both nouveau
and nvidia-current, no change in behaviour.

Jumping around to other tty sessions is not a problem and the system is
working. Just not X..

If you need any more info, please just holler!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 920936] Re: SiS 65x/M650/740 works strangely on high resolution

2012-01-26 Thread Arie Skliarouk
The card works properly with the same LCD on other resolutions:
1400x1050, 1600x1200, 1680x1200...

It just the native resolution of the LCD (1680x1050 16:9) that does not
work properly.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 921082] Re: after touchpad movement and stop, pointer continues in same direction at a steady pace

2012-01-26 Thread Tobias Wolf
This is Trackstick Emulation mode, and it’s super-annoying. I’ve read
«man synaptics» up-and-down and there is no clear way to disable this.
Is it FingerPress? To what level do I have to set it to disable? 256?

There are other settings that have been introduced and set zto default.
And also there are settings that have been disabled. Before the upgrade
you could coast after scrolling, giving you kinetic-like scrolling
behaviour. This is not active anymore.

And, when I scroll down, the scrolled pane sometimes jumps /up/ a
certain distance.

Right now it feels really awkward to use the touchpad (Alps here).

I can't speak for the ubuntu packagers so don't know when they're going to grab
0.9.7. Officially, compiz 0.9.7.0 has not been released upstream yet. I would
expect that to happen first...

I have just re-proposed the fix for oneiric that got lost in November.
Hopefully it will get merged this time.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 763005] Re: Compiz's "Sync to Vblank" makes display stutter/slow with fglrx

2012-01-26 Thread Daniel van Vugt
FYI, the fix was proposed and accepted for oneiric back in November. But
the fix somehow got lost since then and never actually merged into any
ubuntu or oneiric branches. Sorry I didn't realize the merge was bungled
until now, because I'm using the fix in ppa:vanvugt/compiz.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 763005] Re: Compiz's "Sync to Vblank" makes display stutter/slow with fglrx

2012-01-26 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Sorry, I don't see the fix lined up for any official ubuntu updates yet.
But it is definitely in compiz 0.9.7 which should go into Ubuntu 12.04.

You can try the fix out on Ubuntu 11.10 using ppa:vanvugt/compiz:
https://launchpad.net/~vanvugt/+archive/compiz

P.S. It appears I only published the fix in August. So that's 5 months
ago. But still far too long, I agree.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 576648] Re: package nvidia-* failed to install/upgrade: nvidia-* kernel module failed to build (Unable to determine the target kernel version.)

2012-01-26 Thread Daniel van Vugt
If you're using Ubuntu 12.04 and nvidia-173 then just do an update as
the bug is fixed.

If you're using an older version of Ubuntu then the workaround is to revert
back to the Linux kernel your version of Ubuntu came with.
Ubuntu 10.04 --> kernel 2.6.32
Ubuntu 11.04 --> kernel 2.6.38
Ubuntu 11.10 --> kernel 3.0.0

This means uninstalling any newer kernels you have installed. Because
the NVIDIA driver you have is too old to support the newer kernel you
must have manually installed.

Alternatively, if you can't live without the newer kernel you installed, then
another possible workaround is to uninstall the nvidia* driver packages, and
try to find and manually install a compatible driver from here:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/unix.html
