If the above workaround doesn't work for you, you can disable DGA entirely in your xorg.conf: Section "Module" SubSection "extmod" Option "omit xfree86-dga" EndSubSection EndSection That will take care of the remaining cases. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 995715] Re: X defaulting keyboard locale to US at login after upgrading distribution if a Logitech Unifying Receiver is plugged in
Experienced the same bug after upgrading from 11.0 to 12.04. After some extensive debugging and researching for posts of other people (and distros) with similar problems I think the issue is as follows: Ubuntu 12.04 comes with Kernel 3.2. 3.2 introduced the logitech_dj HID driver that is supposed to provide full support for the Logitech Unifying Receiver. Kernels < 3.2 used the generic-usb HID driver instead. With the generic-usb driver, the kernel will create three hidraw device nodes for each unifying receiver: one for the receiver itself, one for a keyboard along with its LED indicators and one that accumulates functions for mice and consumer control devices (for example, the K340 I have has special keys for Mail, Play, on/off, etc. that are similar to a remote control). These functions seem to be contained in the USB HID report descriptor of the Unifying Receiver. Of the three hidraw device nodes, two evdev devices are created under /dev/input, one for keyboard/LED and one for mouse/consumer control and all is working well. With the logitech-dj driver, the kernel will create one hidraw device node for the receiver itself and one device node for every physical device paired with this receiver. The input properties for each device node are derived from a set of bits that the physical device reports to the Unifying Receiver. Most keyboards I've seen happen to send at least: keyboard + LED, consumer control and system control (there is a power button function on the keyboard, too). So we have one hidraw device node (and a corresponding evdev device node under /dev/input) with keyboard, LED, consumer control and system control capabilities. Unfortunately, the consumer control part contains a key that is translated into a "HorizontalWheel" function. Now Xorg comes into play. It uses the evdev input devices. With the generic-usb driver, it finds a keyboard and a pointer input device and attributes them to the Virtual core keyboard and Virtual core pointer, respectively, and all is fine. With the logitech-dj driver, it just finds a single input device for the keyboard (and its extra functions like consumer control) and sees that it supposedly has keyboard AND pointer functions (recall the "HorizontalWheel" issue). Based on this, Xorg seems to attribute the device to the Virtual core pointer and leaves the Virtual core keyboard without a physical device. And now it seems that Xorg ignores the keyboard layout settings configured in e.g. /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-keyboard.conf if the only keyboard present is attached to the Virtual Core pointer. There is a bug report that describes this issue at https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=49950. So, in short, the logitech_dj driver triggers a bug in Xorg that causes the issue. I have tried to different fixes to resolve the issue, that both work. Both fixes are workarounds that prevent the Xorg bug to be triggered as long as it exists. Option 1: Get the kernel source of your current "precise" kernel and apply the following trivial fix (which is actually a backport from Linux upstream 3.4): # --- a/drivers/hid/hid-core.c +++ b/drivers/hid/hid-core.c @@ -1463,8 +1463,10 @@ static const struct hid_device_id hid_have_special_driver[] = { { HID_USB_DEVICE(USB_VENDOR_ID_LOGITECH, USB_DEVICE_ID_LOGITECH_DFGT_WHEEL) }, { HID_USB_DEVICE(USB_VENDOR_ID_LOGITECH, USB_DEVICE_ID_LOGITECH_G25_WHEEL) }, { HID_USB_DEVICE(USB_VENDOR_ID_LOGITECH, USB_DEVICE_ID_LOGITECH_G27_WHEEL) }, +#if IS_ENABLED(CONFIG_HID_LOGITECH_DJ) { HID_USB_DEVICE(USB_VENDOR_ID_LOGITECH, USB_DEVICE_ID_LOGITECH_UNIFYING_RECEIVER) }, { HID_USB_DEVICE(USB_VENDOR_ID_LOGITECH, USB_DEVICE_ID_LOGITECH_UNIFYING_RECEIVER_2) }, +#endif { HID_USB_DEVICE(USB_VENDOR_ID_LOGITECH, USB_DEVICE_ID_LOGITECH_WII_WHEEL) }, { HID_USB_DEVICE(USB_VENDOR_ID_LOGITECH, USB_DEVICE_ID_LOGITECH_RUMBLEPAD2) }, { HID_USB_DEVICE(USB_VENDOR_ID_LOGITECH, USB_DEVICE_ID_SPACETRAVELLER) }, # Then disable CONFIG_HID_LOGITECH_DJ in the kernel config and build a custom kernel. Install and boot the new kernel and the issue will be fixed since the modification reinstates the pre-3.2 behavior and uses the generic-usb driver. Option 2: Change the logitech_dj driver to set HID_QUIRK_MULTI_INPUT for paired devices that provide both keyboard and consumer control functions. This is a little more involved, I won't include the details here since this post is too long already, but it does the trick since with this quirk definition, we get separate devices for each subfunction which makes Xorg happy. I think Option 1 is by far the easiest way to go and when I see how many people have problems with the logitech_dj driver (look at bug reports 993827, 997479, 1000255, 991932 and 958174) I think this driver should be removed from the main distro until Xorg is happy with the devices it creates. It is extremely annoying for users of non-English keyboards to get a broken layout upon log

Also, in case it helps, found new symptom speculate relates to AGP 0x/ForcePCIMode=True supertux-stable in GL mode works fine but background changes to all white instead of graphics. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1025438] [NEW] [HP Workstation z420]: Unity menu dock visually corrupted after resume from suspend.
Public bug reported: Problem encountered: I've seen this happen on a couple of machines running 12.04 LTS with base 3.2.0.23 kernel level. 1.) Choose suspend from menu drop down. 2.) Shake mouse or hit key to resume 3.) System will resume and unity launcher on the left hand side will be distorted. Display is otherwise fine. Workaround: All you need to do usually to clear the distortion is to hover the mouse icon over the affected launcher menu. The menu will then return to its original unaltered condition. Reproducable? Yes, this can be reproduced after every suspend in a 250 cycle loop. Screenshot is attached. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1021517] Re: Xorg-server crashes reproducible with GIMP usage
In discussion with cnd, seb128, sbeattie, and mlankhorst, we decided the safest path forward is to revert the recent changes that led to this crash. I've uploaded 1.11.4-0ubuntu10.6, which reverts the changes from 10.3 and 10.2. 10.3 is a fix to a regression caused by 10.2, so both changes need reverted to get us back to a stable xserver. This undoes a fix that causes touchpads not to work on macbooks, however that's a less severe issue that affects a smaller scope of people than these X server crashes. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1021517 Title: Xorg-server crashes reproducible with GIMP usage To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/gimp/+bug/1021517/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1021517] Re: Xorg-server crashes reproducible with GIMP usage
** Description changed: - Gimp causes a xorg-server crash when I use GIMP in any way. I ending up - with the login screen. + [Impact] + Fatal X server crash when using GIMP, which is a regression caused by recent xserver SRU changes. - + [Test Case] Steps to reproduce: step1: open Gimp in Ubuntu step2: create new image step3: choosing tool (e.g. pencil) step4: applying pencil to image step5: crash (login window appears) + [Stable Fix] + For now, simply revert the patches added in versions 2:1.11.4-0ubuntu10.2 and .3. + + [Regression Discussion] + The 10.2 SRU was intended to fix a touchpad issue on certain macbooks. 10.3 attempted to fix a regression caused by 10.2, but caused this bug. Reverting these changes should bring us back to a less crashy xserver. + + This will regress the touchpad on macbooks, but the scope and severity + of that bug are much less than the X server crashes being seen. Macbook + users suffering from that issue have the option to run an earlier + xserver version until a better tested fix becomes available. + + [Original Report] Here's the GIMP output: gimp: Fatal IO error 11 (Resource temporarily unavailable) on X server :0. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 873495] Re: LightDM fails to start after nvidia-current or nvidia-current-updates are installed (upstart job issue)
I no longer have this issue as a result of some system modifications. I changed my laptop disk arrangement so that I have two SSDs configured as RAID0. This has had the sum effect of slightly slowing down boot time from my previous configuration of just the one SSD. I do not use the proprietary NVIDIA driver on my system (NVIDIA GeForce G210M ) and I did a complete reinstall of 12.04. Obviously I'm not saying this is somethnig everyone should do - I needed this particularly setup and as a knock-on effect it stopped the low graphics mode error occurring. I am adding this result here as it *might* indicate something useful to someone in the know. I suspect my resolution here is as a direct result of the boot time slow down which would corroborate with the OP's supposition that this is a race condition. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/873495 Title: LightDM fails to start after nvidia-current or nvidia-current-updates are installed (upstart job issue) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/lightdm/+bug/873495/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

The screen flickers when I boot up, it starts when the purple screen with Ubuntu logo shows up, and doesn't seem to stop until I play with the brightness hotkeys. It seems to be linked with a problem that appeared at the same time: I can sometimes use my brightness hotkeys only for minimum, 1st level and max level, or sometimes it is just minimum and 1s level that are available. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1021517] Re: Xorg-server crashes reproducible with GIMP usage
I can confirm that the crash depends on the fn-f8 combo to activate/disable the touchpad. The interesting thing is that it doesnt matter if the touchpad is actually active or not. If I disable/enable the touchpad via terminal [synclient touchpadoff=1/0] it doesnt crash as long as the touchpad isn't deactivated via fn-f8. I'm usually using the trackpoint so i didnt notice this behaviour before. Steps to reproduce: 1) activate the touchpad via fn-f8 2) create a new image in gimp and try out some tools -> no crash happens [ 3) deactivate touchpad via terminal -> no crash ] 4) deactivate the touchpad via fn-f8 and click on the gimp workspace -> xserver crashes instantly (reactivating the touchpad via terminal before pressing fn-f8 doesnt change the result) Some further tests: 1) Deactivating the touchpad in the bios: a) only trackpoint -> no crash (pressing fn-f8 has obviously no effect as no touchpad is active) b) trackpoint and a simple external mouse -> same as above 2) Deactivating the trackpoint in the bios: a) only touchpad -> obviuosly can't click on the gimp workspace if the touchpad is disabled, so no way to tell b) touchpad and external mouse -> crash once you follow the steps described above. 3) Using external mouse, trackpoint and trackpad -> crash if you click with mouse or trackpoint once the touchpad is deactivated using fn-f8 Well, it really seems to be related to the touchpad or rather it's deactivation using the keycombo. As a workaround, you can simply activate your touchpad via fn-f8 and keep it on, deactivate it via teminal or diable it in the bios of your laptop.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.
Activating Proposed in order to install 3.2.0-27 completely fucked up my system, i started getting all kinds of splice errors on downloaded files and even more crashing, spent my Sunday morning reinstalling the steaming pile that is 12.04 I also tried installing Debian, but, can you believe this shit, the installer does not work with laptop keyboards, looked up the FAQ, "oh yeah we know it seems to happen with laptops try with APIC/ASPIC off". I really wonder why i am wasting my time on this shit, after 6 years of Ubuntu my next machine will be a Macbook. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/993187 Title: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.
