[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1083457] [NEW] [needs-upgrade] latest bugfix release

2012-11-26 Thread Sandra Karuving
Public bug reported:

Please consider an upgrade to the latest bugfix release of the intel graphics
driver. it will fix a bunch of crashes, little problems and will bring a + on
performance to users of older gen4 (like my GMA 4500) hardware.
this will fix a problem with minecraft/pokemmo/other-lwjgl-games that let the
xserver crash on gameend with gen4 graphics.
At this moment the version 2.20.14 is the latest but intel will continue to
bring bugfixreleases. since they are *bugfix* releases it should be possible to
upgrade withour konflict the ubuntu-stable-release-upgrade methodic. its just
like the KDE SC.

Please. this would bring back some performance to users of older
hardware and stbility to users of newer

Hi Nick, thanks for flagging this to our attention on this list.

I have added this to our TODO list, and hopefully someone will get to
this before too long.

  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/TODO

FWIW, with fglrx, the packaging is maintained by tseliot in github. A
good way to get changes reviewed and included is to branch his fglrx
updates tree and propose a merge that includes your changes.

2012-11-26 Thread goog64
I did it (took me a while to learn how to create that file).
It worked.
inxi -G now returns: GLX Renderer: Mesa DRI Intel 945GM x86/MMX/SSE2

I logged out and back in and it still worked.
Dragging a window around increases CPU use to 50%. Is that normal?

Will this fix work for other user accounts on the computer? Or only the
one I was logged into when I created the xorg.conf file?

in systemconfiguration, it says there is non driver available...anyway, I"ve
first used this here:
http://www.unixmen.com/ubuntu-12-10-and-amd-catalyst-problem-solved/

then got "unsupported hardware" watermark by using the ppa from
tomasz...reverted it and used this here but with legacy driver:
http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Quantal_Installation_Guide#Using_Ubuntu-supplied_fglrx.2FCatalyst

after compiling, this bug got in but I"ve not done all steps to
install the driver..still need to reboot and configure xorg.conf

have amd athlon 64 3000+ with 3gb ram and agp version of ati sapphire
hd3650 512mb gddr3 ram

lets see if it works and if I don"t get this f*g watermark again and
fglrxinfo will tell me that the driver is succsessfully installed..

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1080674] Re: [QEMU] Corrupted desktop screen for raring desktop installation in QEMU guest (Cirrus graphics)

2012-11-26 Thread Bryce Harrington
Since the behavior exhibits itself in gnome classic without effects, and
since turning -vga std on works around the issue, it is sounding
unlikely to be mesa, and more likely to be the video driver itself
(-cirrus, or potentially the kernel).

Does booting the quantal kernel in the raring vm (without using the -vga
std workaround) also work around the problem?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1082187] Re: Asus “out of area” warning in the middle of the screen

2012-11-26 Thread Bryce Harrington
Reboot into a 12.04 or 12.10 livecd, collect /var/log/Xorg.0.log and the
output of dmesg, and attach here. If the error message really means
"out of range", then perhaps the modeline being used has changed.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1078598] Re: Incorrect screen resolution with NVIDIA drivers

2012-11-26 Thread MikeyP
I have decided to workaround the problem. I installed my old ATI Radeon
card from my old (dead) PC. Then I installed the Zorin 6.1 distribution.
I now have the correct screen resolution and full control of the screen
i.e. in "Displays" you can see the make & manufacturer of the screen and
is switches off when Zorin shuts down.

I am convinced that a major part of my problem was that my nVidia card
does not have a VGA interface and my screen only accepted a VGA
interface therefore I had to by a DVI to VGA converter plug. It may be
that this blocks the ability to control the screen ( Only a guess).
Zorin 6.1 is based on 12.04 which also seems to resolve the driver
issues.

I will stick with Zorin from now on.

I hope you get to the bottom of the issues in 12.10. Thanks for the help
so far.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 301958] Re: no support for sis 671/771 video cards

2012-11-26 Thread Antonio J. de Oliveira
Hi, Jonas

I coudn't get the proper results and some people complained that they
could not use 1366x768 panels, and that were the two reasons I took the
original http://linuxconsulting.ro/ driver and am modifying all modules.
I expect to have a few hours today to get to this :-)

Cheers all

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 755841]

2012-11-26 Thread Usedasbugtracking
I'm now on Kubuntu 12.10 and I enabled in xorg.conf both the tearfree
option and the sna acceleration. It's definitely better: the xv output
seems fine so far in mplayer, the gl output is however unusable as the
video keep halting during the play (truthfully I don't really care about
it as long as the xv output works). Watching youtube gives me less
headache but it still isn't perfect: on some videos there's sometimes
still tearing. One thing that I also noticed: after watching a youtube
video in fullscreen the display gets somehow corrupted at the bottom of
the kde screen (the sidebar containing the desktop shortcuts, the clock,
the minimized windows). When I pass the mouse pointer on it everything
gets fine again (as it is refreshed) but not for long...

Should I expect some improvements in a more recent driver that the one
provided in Kubuntu 12.10?

The stuttering is more or less expected at this point (mostly depends
upon a client stalling due to a readback) as TearFree is just a proof-
of-principle, and only possible with SNA. I plan to finish the
asynchronous implementation in the near future.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 755841]

2012-11-26 Thread Mariocortis
I don't understand the technical details, so please forgive
misunderstandings or stupid questions.

Do I need SNA for the TearFree option? I get stuttering with SNA and TearFree,
and still get tearing with TearFree without SNA.
I created a xorg.conf with only the following:
Section "Device"
   Identifier "Intel Graphics"
   Driver "intel"
   Option "AccelMethod" "sna"
   Option "TearFree" "true"
EndSection
Is that the correct way to do it?

Is there any chance of a fix in the foreseeable future? Or is buying a
graphics card a good idea at this point?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 755841]

2012-11-26 Thread Chris Wilson
Note in addition to using pageflipping via the TearFree option, there is
a glimmer of light in the form of

kernel commit d7d4eeddb8f72342f70621c4b3cb718af9361712
Author: Chris Wilson
Date: Wed Oct 17 12:09:54 2012 +0100

drm/i915: Allow DRM_ROOT_ONLY|DRM_MASTER to submit privileged batchbuffers

and

xf86-video-intel commit 891bae4aa91e85542dcbe38f6ee92141e3efc801
Author: Chris Wilson
Date: Wed Oct 17 11:29:10 2012 +0100

sna: Use the secure batches to program scanline waits on gen6+

to try and convince the hardware to do vsync'ed updates. (In terms of
power efficiency, using pageflipping is the way forward as that is how
the hardware is designed to operate. Also note that only the later
steppings of SNB have scanline waits...)

xres.c ResFindAllRes doesn't handle the case where the type is 0 (it
uses type-1 as an index into an array); it's trivial to fix that with an

if ((type & TypeMask)!=0)

the question is should that ever happen?

I can see that dix/resource.c:AddResource is getting called (once) with
a type of 0 - is that legal?
