[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1722998] [NEW] VMware memory allocation process ... HUGE RESOURCE HIT ?
Public bug reported: Hi, I am writing this with concerns on the way RAM(memory) is handled by the same software(VMware Workstation) across different versions of the Ubuntu OS. I am however unsure if the concern i am reporting here is actually a Bug ... or ... a feature that has been withdrawn on purpose ... or ... a feature that's got overlooked from kernel to kernel updates. How did i stumble upon this issue ? My primary daily driver OS is Ubuntu 14.04 (ker. 3.13), i use VMware workstation on this host to run Windows 7 to run my work software which does not have a linux version. While my VM guest*Windows 7) has been allocated 8GB of RAM the RAM usage on my Host shows no more than 3-4GB. I while back i had installed Ubuntu 16.04 on an adjacent partition and tried running a copy of the exact same VM guest and to my shock saw that right from boot the entire 8GB of RAM gets blocked on the host system. What was earlier 3-4 GB of RAM consumption in Ubuntu 14.04 now shot up to a whopping 10-11GB in Ubuntu 16.04. A HUGE resource hit. Now i am test driving Deepin OS i find the same resource hit on this OS too just like the one experienced on Ubuntu 16.04 ... 10-12 GB of RAM is affected the moment i boot up my vm machine. I am using an exact same copy from Ubuntu 14.04 to run even here. What additional test's have i done to probe this issue ? I have tested this HUGE RESOURCE HIT on the following versions ... I used the exact same version of VMware Workstation on my test OS's as well as the latest version of VMware workstation, following are the findings. software version tested on ... VMware Workstation 12.1.0 VMware Workstation 14 OS versions tested on ... Ubuntu 14.04 (Ker. 3.13) Ubuntu 15.04 (Ker. 3.19) Ubuntu 15.10 (Ker. 4.2) tests on the above OS's show that the memory is efficiently handled and the overall memory consumption(both Host and Guest VM included)is roughly around 4 GB even though the VM is configured with 8GB of RAM UbuntuGnome 16.04 (Ker. 4.4) Deepin 15.4.1 (Ker. 4.9) UbuntuGnome 17.04 (Ker. 4.10) However my tests on these OS resulted in a HUGE RESOURCE HIT ... the overall memory consumption(both Host and Guest VM included) here has been a WHOPPING 10-12GB. What proof do you have of this inconsistency ? I am attaching a screenshot with the memory consumed marked side by side. I have Deepin OS 15.4.1(Ker. 4.9) and Ubuntu 14.04(Ker. 3.13) on my system ... one demonstrating the resource hog i am reporting ... and ... the other demonstrating the efficient use of system resources. So if you require any logs or commands to be run out of both this environments to further probe this resource leakage please let me know the direct commands and i'll provide the respective outputs to help you identify the issue. PS : I am not a geek but rather consider myself as a power user, hence direct commands to collect additional info out of the 2 environments would help. thanks for looking. ** Affects: xserver-xorg-video-vmware (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Attachment added: "Memory Resource Hit.png" https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1722998/+attachment/4968265/+files/Memory%20Resource%20Hit.png -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-vmware in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1722998 Title: VMware memory allocation process ... [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1722987] [NEW] screen brightness control is backwards
Public bug reported: Increase brightness key on my keyboard (func-f3) makes the screen more dim. Decrease brightness key on my keyboard (func-f2) makes the screen more bright. The gnome-shell on-screen display of brightness is backwards also. I see on google search results that this was a problem with older kernels. I guess the problem is back / possible regression. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1722897] [NEW] Unexpected behavior with Wayland desktop
Public bug reported: I'm fixing an issue with drm/vmwgfx on 17.10 Wayland desktop, and I'd like to chat with someone about how Ubuntu Wayland works. Specifically, when a VM is configured to have 4MB of GPU memory, we have trouble setting modes above 1024x768@32bpp even though there's technically enough GPU memory to handle the framebuffer. This does not happen with Ubuntu 17.10 Xorg desktop. >From what I can see there are two things: 1. Ubuntu Wayland seems to be allocated 2-3 framebuffer sized surfaces. Is it doing triple-buffering? 2. For certain modes, e.g. 1360x768 and 800x600, the pitch coming into .create_fb is greater than mode->width * bytes-per-pixel. For instance, for 800x600@32bpp, the requested pitch is 3328 instead of 3200. These two behaviors is different from what we assumed for low memory configurations, and so is causing some issues. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1722824] [NEW] Xorg crashed with SIGABRT
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1557346 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1557346 Public bug reported: Happened after an upgrade. First the desktop became unresponsive (Emacs window stopped accepting input even while appearing to have focus according to cursor shape, Alt-Tab did nothing, nor did clicking on any desktop icons). Console switching still worked. SIGTERM failed to impress panel and desktop, so turned to SIGKILL. No change on the desktop (still a working mouse cursor but no reaction to keys or clicks) when console-switching back. Finally, switching back stopped working also, displaying just a blinking text cursor on a blank screen, then this abort. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1707929] Re: [FFe] Revert blacklisting of Indic layouts
@Nathan: We don't backport changes to this package unless some really important bug is spotted. The reason is that many users make custom keyboard configuration by editing xkb-data files, and a package update in a stable release would wipe out such changes. So no, sorry. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1717928] [NEW] gnome crashes when using qemu display
You have been subscribed to a public bug: Using the qemu vga display under gnome is reliably causing gnome to crash on my laptop. I've seen this when using libvirt and also when invoking qemu from the command line. I've tried several display options for qemu: -vga qxl -vga virtio -display gtk All result in the crash. No crash report is appearing in /var/crash after this happens, but I checked dmesg the last time and found this: [15078.446564] gnome-shell[10327]: segfault at 8 ip 7f4c53c794af sp 7ffd7eb03e90 error 4 in libmutter-cogl-1.so[7f4c53c14000+a5000] The crash usually doesn't happen right away. Sometimes it happens a few seconds after the display is opened, other times it's happened when I've moved to another window and then select the qemu display using Alt-Tab. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1722708] Re: Crash when setting laptop display resolution
Not quite; with X the screens flicker a couple of times, somehow change resolution temporarily, but then come back with the original settings. With the X case (don't remember checking the wayland one), when I start the resolution modification, I see things like this when starting gnome- control-center from the console: (gnome-control-center:15810): display-cc-panel-WARNING **: Config not applicable: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.InvalidArgs: Logical monitor scales must be identical ...and the Apply button does not show up. When I change the external monitor to 100% scaling, the Apply button appears and is enabled, then clicking on it gives this stuff on console while the flickering etc occurs: (gnome-control-center:15810): display-cc-panel-WARNING **: Config not applicable: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Message recipient disconnected from message bus without replying (gnome-control-center:15810): display-cc-panel-WARNING **: Config not applicable: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NameHasNoOwner: Name "org.gnome.Mutter.DisplayConfig" does not exist ...and then, after that, finally this on the console: (gnome-control-center:15810): display-cc-panel-WARNING **: Config not applicable: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.AccessDenied: The requested configuration is based on stale information -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1722708 Title: Crash when setting laptop display resolution To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1722708/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
