That's the wrong driver you are trying to install so this is a duplicate
of bug 1815531.

The driver you are seeking is xserver-xorg-video-intel-hwe-18.04 but
actually you should not even install that. The default 'modeset' driver
is more modern and better supported.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1872159] Re: booting with splash hangs when external monitors are connected (pure intel 8th gen laptop)

2020-04-13 Thread Tim Richardson
I have been investigating other bug reports. I can't find anything that
helps my very much, but I did note references to timing. It is very
puzzling why I don't have problems when booting from the installation to
an external drive. That drive is actually a USB stick (ext4 formatted).
My internal ssd uses lvm, the stick not, but the stick is also much
slower, just in case that is relevant.

2020-04-13 Thread Tim Richardson
I have been trying to work out how to log a failed session with plymouth debug
messages. I finally succeeded, it is attached.
Note that at the end of log file, it goes into suspend. That was me trying to
power off the machine, and not holding the button long enough. It actually
suspends and resume right back to the stuck plymouth display, but I don't know
any way out except to force the machine off.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1870637] Re: Nvidia+modeset: Can't set 4K@60Hz: HDMI max TMDS frequency 300000KHz

2020-04-13 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Yes I think this is some kind of failure to install the Nvidia driver
correctly, such that the Xorg config was missing. It should work
perfectly if installed from the official Ubuntu .deb files or via the
GUI.

Unless the problem happens reliably I think this bug should expire.

Norbert,

VAAPI may trigger this crash because it involves calling low-level
driver functions within Xorg. That does not make it a problem with any
VAAPI packages, but is still a bug in Xorg. Or multiple bugs in Xorg.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1872159] Re: booting with splash hangs when external monitors are connected (pure intel 8th gen laptop)

2020-04-13 Thread Michael Bantjes
I'm having the same problem on a Lenovo T430. If I boot the laptop on
its own, it boots fine. If it's on the dock, which has two external
monitors attached to it, it boots until it gets to the Ubuntu splash
screen with the spinning propeller tips and never passes that point.
I've left it on overnight and it never completes booting to the desktop.

If I boot it on it's own, sign in to the desktop, and then dock it, both
external monitors are recognized and opening/closing the lid toggles the
multiple pane layouts as expected.

Like Tim, I can get it to fully boot on the dock with multiple monitors
by updating /etc/default/grub to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="".

Having this problem in 20.04

GPU: AMD RX 5700XT
Fractional Scaling: 175%
Display: 4k Asus MG28UQ

Also, I can "workaround" it by moving the cursor to the bottom right, so it
will be hidden there.
But then on Pressing F11 (for fullscreen in Firefox / Youtube) the auto hidden
dock will reveal constantly and there will be a loss of performance, like if it
is in a continuous loop

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1849084] Re: Freeze on system-resume caused by kwin and amdgpu driver

2020-04-13 Thread khitschler
I can confirm that with switched off compositor (KDE, Shift-ALT-F12)
resume is working. But I think the compositor act as trigger only and is
not the reason for the bug.

I've attached the relevant journalctl output of a current unsuccessful
resume. I started the sleep at 13th april about 20:28:06 and tried to
resume about 20:28:20. Some minutes later I logged in via ssh and
initialized a reboot.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1872501] [NEW] Modifications ALT R mapping at xmodmap not taking effect

2020-04-13 Thread JP Ventura
Public bug reported:

How to map ALT Gr key as ALT R on Ubuntu 20.04?

As described in an Ask Ubuntu post, I've executed xev at Ubuntu 20.04 in
order to discover ALT L and ALT R keycodes:

  - ALT L: keycode 64 (keysym 0xffe9, Alt_L)
  - ALT R: keycode 108 (keysym 0xfe03, ISO_Level3_Shift)

Running xmodmap -pke > ~/.Xmodmap, the following configuration was
saved:

keycode 64 = Alt_L Meta_L Alt_L Meta_L Alt_L Meta_L
keycode 108 = ISO_Level3_Shift NoSymbol ISO_Level3_Shift NoSymbol
ISO_Level3_Shift

Theoretically re-mapping 108 at ~/.Xmodmap should be enough:

keycode 108 = Alt_R Meta_R Alt_R Meta_R Alt_R Meta_R

However, even running xmodmap ~/.Xmodmap and also saving this command at
~/.xinitrc, the modifications did not take effect immediately or after
login again at Ubuntu.

Thus it is not possible to execute extensible commands in Emacs using
ALT R + X at Emacs

So what is the proper way of changing ALT R behavior? Or is it a bug at
20.04 release?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1872327] Re: OLED brightness control on Intel Iris Plus Graphics G7

2020-04-13 Thread Daniel Blatter
I found a workaround using a script that is triggered by inotify.

I created the script called brightness in /usr/local/bin:

sudo nano /usr/local/bin/brightness

content:
--
#!/bin/sh

path=/sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight

luminance() {
read -r level < "$path"/actual_brightness
printf %.10f\\n "$((100 * level/max))e-2"
}

read -r max < "$path"/max_brightness
xrandr --output eDP-1 --brightness "$(luminance)"

inotifywait -me modify --format '' "$path"/actual_brightness | while read FILE
do
echo $(luminance)
xrandr --output eDP-1 --brightness "$(luminance)"
done
--

chmod 755 /usr/local/bin/brightness

Remarks:
- The script waits for change in
/sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/actual_brightness.
- "intel_backlight" might be replaced the corresponding directory name in
/sys/class/backlight according to your installation.
- eDP-1 may be replaced by the display name (might be eDP1 or different). Check
the correct display name using the xrandr command.

Add the script to the in the system setting to be executed at login.

Ubuntu installs fine but only main screen remains functional and only at
low resolution. This can be fixed by adding "iommu=soft" as a kernel
parameter.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1872415] [NEW] Laptop/Tablet lose trackpad on flipping to tablet mode.

2020-04-13 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I am on a Lenovo Flex 14 laptop that includes a 360-degree hinge for
flipping the screen to tablet mode. Upon flipping the screen to tablet
mode the trackpad seems to be disabled but after returning the screen to
90 degrees or laptop mode the trackpad is not re-enabled.

The only way the trackpad seems to be able to be re-enabled is by
restarting the system. Logging out and back does not fix the problem.

The laptop keyboard and touchscreen still work after flipping to
360-degrees and back to 90 degrees/laptop, but, again, the trackpad is
not working after doing this operation of flipping the screen.

Tested on Xubuntu 20.04 and Ubuntu 20.04, which are both in beta.
