[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 317025] Re: Compaq CPQ750TP scrolling horizontally causes vertical scrolling
When I looked into this (years ago), from what I could tell, windows was enabling a different mode of operation in the mouse, one that sent both horizontal and vertical scrolling data to the computer. Linux was using the default mode which translated virticle scrolling to up and down button presses, and horizontal scrolling to tripled up or trippled down button presses. I was unable to do anything with this in hal. The only thing I have noticed change in the years since I first reported this issue is that more than three buttons became supported on the mouse. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-input-evdev in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/317025 Title: Compaq CPQ750TP scrolling horizontally causes vertical scrolling To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-input-evdev/+bug/317025/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 317025] Re: Scroll ball will not scroll horizontally
apport information ** Tags added: apport-collected possible-manual-nvidia-install ubuntu ** Description changed: This is similar to a bunch of other "horizontal scroll does not work" bugs, but I did not find any of those that were close enough that I could call this a duplicate. The mouse is a Compaq CPQ750TP. It shows up as "Acrox USB & PS/2 Mouse" when plugged into the PC directly, and "ATEN CS1784" when plugged into my KVM (it works identically regardless how it is plugged in). The mouse has a scroll ball and 5 buttons. I have spent quite some time attempting to get the horizontal scrolling to work. I have the following in a .fdi file in the /etc/hal/fdi/policy directory: 6 7 1 2 3 4 5 10 11 8 9 6 7 0 0 10 11 Horizontal scrolling works perfectly on Windows 2000 (different computer, same KVM & mouse) Attempting to scroll horizontally in Ubuntu gets fast vertical scrolling. If I monitor events with "xinput test 4" Left button maps to button 1, middle button (pushing down on ball) maps to button 2, right button maps to button 3 left side button maps to button 8, right button maps to button 9, vertical scroll with ball maps to buttons 4 & 5, horizontal scroll with ball also maps to buttons 4 & 5, but each event is repeated 7 times. It appears as if horizontal scrolling should be mapping to buttons 6 & 7. The hal file above was an attempt at a work arround to remap 6 & 7 to 10 & 11, but the remapping to 4 & 5 is still happening. Wild speculation: someone has hard wired his preferences into the driver. $ lsb_release -rd Description: Ubuntu 8.10 Release: 8.10 Not sure where this problem is happening, but my guess is evdev. - Horizontal scrolling is very important to me. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 317025] Re: Scroll ball will not scroll horizontally
The problem still exists in Ubuntu 13.10. I was unable to do the requested test in the daily build because the daily build is not functional enough. Booting from the live CD, the mouse did no initially work. I had to unplug it and plug it back in before I could click on the "try ubuntu" button. Once Ubuntu started, I had no menus at all. I had two icons: Install Ubuntu and examples. Clicking on the examples icon brought up a file browser in a fixed sized window with no window decorations (no maximize, no minimize, no close button) I found a way to run firefox, it also had no window decorations. In an attempt to get a window up with a horizontal scroll bar, I tried typing a URL, and found that the keyboard was not working. At this point I realized I could do nothing usefull with this live CD, ejected it and hit the reset button on my computer. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-input-evdev in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/317025 Title: Scroll ball will not scroll horizontally To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-input-evdev/+bug/317025/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Another symtem to add: I have been getting long seequences where it boots only into low graphics mode. (5 or 6 boots in a row). I have not had the patience to see if it would eventually recover on its own, but booting with my second monitor (HDMI) disconnected seems to exit the sequence. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1071101] Re: nearly every other boot I get "Low Graphics Mode" message.
I have stripped out the timestamps so I could do a diff of the two log files (there is probably a way to skip the first n charactors of each line in diff, but I did not see it in a quick look at the docs). Attached is a diff of Xorg.0.log files between a good boot, and a boot where the graphics dropped into low graphics mode. The first thing in the log that shows an error is the "setversion 1.4 failed". Things go south from there. What is "setversion"? What is it trying to do? Why would it fail? ** Attachment added: "Diff of good boot log & bad boot log" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1071101/+attachment/3423152/+files/good_vs_bad_diff -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1071101 Title: nearly every other boot I get "Low Graphics Mode" message. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1071101] Re: nearly every other boot I get "Low Graphics Mode" message.
Text of the error message: The system is running in low-graphics mode Your screen, graphics card, and input device settings could not be detected correctly. You will need to configure these yourself. Usually before I get the error window, it switches to a text screen where log information is displayed. Near the end of the log are a bunch of [stopping] (or something to that effect) messages these come after a bunch of [starting] messages Both types have an indication of success on the right end of the line. there are no indications of failure. At least twice after rebooting, when I log in, I get a message about xorg crashing (which I allowed it to report). [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1071101] [NEW] nearly every other boot I get "Low Graphics Mode" message.
Public bug reported: I'm not entirely sure that this is xorg, I can't figure out which log file to look in to find out. The log files with likely names did not give me usefull info. I've seen similar errors, but never the same hardware or circumstanses. Behavior started immediatly after upgrade to 12.10 I'm running GNOME classic (though I think this bug is occuring before this becomes relevent), using an ATI HD4850 video card with open source drivers. About every other boot, I get a white message box telling me that something went wrong and the system will boot in low graphics mode. I'll try and write down the exact message next time this happens. The first time this happend (the next day after upgrading to 12.10, I was able to select the "use defaults" option to continue. every time after this, the "use defaults" or "use latest backup" goes right back to the same question. The only way forward is to boot into low graphics mode. I usually shut down the computer at the login screen when it is in low graphics mode (from the menu, not the switch), and turn the computer back on. This has booted cleanly with the correct graphics mode every time I have done it (about 4 times). The one time I tried "sudo shutdown -r now", it rebooted and had the same problem again ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 12.10 Package: xorg 1:7.7+1ubuntu4 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 3.5.0-17.28-generic 3.5.5 Uname: Linux 3.5.0-17-generic x86_64 .tmp.unity.support.test.0: ApportVersion: 2.6.1-0ubuntu3 Architecture: amd64 CompizPlugins: [core, composite, opengl, compiztoolbox, decor, snap, expo, move, resize, scale, regex] CompositorRunning: None Date: Wed Oct 24 19:12:16 2012 DistUpgraded: 2012-10-21 15:14:45,536 DEBUG enabling apt cron job DistroCodename: quantal DistroVariant: ubuntu ExtraDebuggingInterest: Yes, if not too technical GraphicsCard: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI RV770 [Radeon HD 4850] [1002:9442] (prog-if 00 [VGA controller]) Subsystem: Hightech Information System Ltd. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1035556] [NEW] Driver won't detect monitor on DisplayPort
Public bug reported: I have a PowerColor AX4850 512MD3-DHO video card, a BenQ XL2420TX monitor, and a Dell 3008WFP monitor. I tried to connect the BenQ monitor with the DisplayPort connection. This video driver did not recognize that there was anything plugged in. Even if the BenQ was the only monitor connected, the OS driver found nothing. The ATI binary BLOB did properly recognize this monitor plugged in to the DisplayPort, but that driver is unusable for other reasons. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 582523] Re: Analog tuner does not work on boot, but restarting cx8800 allows it to work
The situation has changed a bit since I have upgraded to 10.10 I no longer need to run the script to get the card to function. I need only stop the mythTV back end, and run: mplayer tv://32 -tv device=/dev/video0:driver=v4l2:chanlist=us-cable:alsa:adevice=hw.1,0:amode=1:audiorate=48000:forceaudio:volume=100:immediatemode=0:norm=NTSC-M This does not mean that everything is working. I am unable to use "Watch TV" in MythTV with the analog tuner. TVTime will show video, but not play sound, and only works when mythTV back end is stopped Zapping requires I set NTSC-M-JP to get a proper picture NTSC-M gets me a noisy black and white picture, and I am located in the US. Also, Zapping does not have an option for the cable standard I am using. The one that works of the two that are available will not tune some of the channels. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 588980] [NEW] Dumped into login screen while using google earth
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg I was scrolling around in Google Earth when the screen suddenly went black. System did not reboot, but shortly the login screen appeared. I have seen this happen several times on this computer, as well as another computer with an older ATI card and 32 bit processor. This did not happen with the ATI proprietary driver on 9.10. I do not know if this happens on the ATI proprietary driver under 10.04 because google earth would crash before the globe appeared with that setup (did not dump me back at the login screen). This is the second time I have attempted to enter this bug. 1st time, I said yes to the request for extra information, waited an hour for 300 MiB to be transfered, then errored out with a "could not connect to database" error. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 581571] Re: [CLE266] Via Epia M6000 installs, but reboots when login attempted
This system is now working as well as it did on 9.04, which is not very well. Scrolling is broken. If I bring up a window that can be scrolled, and I scroll, only the newly displayed part of the scrolling window is updated, the stuff that should be shifted up or down remains unaffected. If I play a game of Spider 3 decks on AisleRiot, the system hangs when I move the 4th card (picture frozen keyboard dead, but still occasional disk activity). BTW, the system definitely installed i686 packages on this not quite i686 machine. If the i686 packages use the cmov instruction, than the installer installed the wrong version of the packages on this system. -- [CLE266] Via Epia M6000 installs, but reboots when login attempted https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/581571 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-openchrome in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 581571] Re: [CLE266] Via Epia M6000 installs, but reboots when login attempted
I did as you asked. (took me a while to figure out that "Xorg -configure" needed a sudo and that it put the new xorg.conf.new in my home directory). Anyway, with the new xorg.conf, the system no longer reboots when I attempt to do a graphical login, instead it hangs with a dead keyboard and no mouse pointer (apparently while trying to draw the top panel). I added the \tOption "AIGLX" "false" line to the xorg.conf file, and now I can log in. I am currently running an update on the system (110 packages to download & update). It appears that the old scrolling problem still exists, but I will test that more thoroughly when the update completes. -- [CLE266] Via Epia M6000 installs, but reboots when login attempted https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/581571 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-openchrome in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 581571] Re: [CLE266] Via Epia M6000 installs, but reboots when login attempted
I attempted to do what you asked, but I'm not sure I succeeded. There was no xorg.conf file in /etc/X11. I created one with the following contents: Section "ServerLayout" Option "AIGLX" "false" EndSection (that indenting was done with a tab, but I was unable to use tabs in this comment, so the tab is represented with spaces here) I rebooted the system, but it hung with the Ubuntu screen with five red dots underneath the word Ubuntu. The keyboard was still active (I could toggle the numlock LED) but I could not change to a text terminal to login. I rebooted and attempted to enter video safe mode. This eventually got me back to a text login where I was able to delete the xorg.conf file and get things back to the way they were. A side effect of booting in video safe mode is that it created a xorg.conf.(something I forget but implying video safe mode) file. Did I create the correct section for the AIGLX option? Should I try adding that to the safe mode xorg.conf file and renaming that to xorg.conf? -- [CLE266] Via Epia M6000 installs, but reboots when login attempted https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/581571 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-openchrome in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 582523] [NEW] Analog tuner does not work on boot, but restarting cx8800 allows it to work
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-v4l I have been trying to get an ATI HDTV Wonder card to work with analog NTSC television on MythTV without success. (note that this card works fine for ATSC, or clear QAM digital broadcasts). With the tuner set up following the MythTV wiki, I get a blank screen, and a channel scan finds no channels. everything appears to be set up properly, /dev/video0 exists. Running "mplayer tv://32 -tv device=/dev/video0:driver=v4l2:chanlist=us- cable:alsa:adevice=hw.1,0:amode=1:audiorate=48000:forceaudio:volume=100:immediatemode=0:norm=NTSC-M" gets me a black window with static playing from the speakers. As per a suggestion by Harry Orenstein on the mythtv-users mailing list, if I stop mythtvbackend, and run the following script: #!/bin/sh # # unload hdtv wonder modules # /sbin/modprobe -r cx8800 /sbin/modprobe -r cx88_dvb /sbin/modprobe -r nxt200x /usr/bin/pkill pulseaudio; /sbin/modprobe -r cx88_alsa /sbin/modprobe -r tuner /sbin/modprobe -r tuner_simple /sbin/modprobe -r tuner_types /sbin/modprobe -r tda9887 /sbin/modprobe -r tda8290 # # reload hdtv wonder modules # /sbin/modprobe cx88_dvb /sbin/modprobe cx8800 video_nr=1 vbi_nr=1 /sbin/modprobe cx88_alsa index=1 then run "mplayer tv://32 -tv device=/dev/video1:driver=v4l2:chanlist=us- cable:alsa:adevice=hw.1,0:amode=1:audiorate=48000:forceaudio:volume=100:immediatemode=0:norm=NTSC-M" both video and audio play properly. I do not understand all of what the script is doing. At the very least it is changing the device from /dev/video0 to /dev/video1. I have tried changing the script so that the device is /dev/video0, but then I get video with static instead of sound. In any case, after running this script and restarting mythbackend, mythTV can now find channels when it scans, but when I try and do live TV, I get a bit over a second of video & sound before the picture freezes then switches to garbage. How do I make this work properly on startup? [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 357900] Re: Epia-M6000 display problems & hang
The only way I can execute that command on that computer is if I login to a text only window. Remember, the problem with this system is that it will reboot if I attempt to login to the GUI. When I did that and ran that command, some of the stuff that went buy implied that it expects a GUI interface. Anyway, it got to a screen that implied it wanted me to enter my Launchpad login credentials. I moved the cursor to the e-mail address entry point, started typing and the screen immediately jumped to something completely different. In any case it left me completely confused as to what I should be doing. After some confused button pushing, at one point it claimed it was starting the browser (not possible on a text only login), it dumped me back at the command line. I was never able to enter my login credentials. -- Epia-M6000 display problems & hang https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/357900 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 317025] Re: Scroll ball will not scroll horizontally
This bug still exists on 10.04. I guess technically it is more a case of incomplete support for this type of mouse. One must send a command to this mouse to get it out of compatibility mode and enable the extra features. I tried to look at the source code for this, but found it rather opaque and do not understand it yet (let alone know where all of it is, or how it is interconnected). -- Scroll ball will not scroll horizontally https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/317025 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-input-evdev in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 357900] Re: Epia-M6000 display problems & hang
If it is a processor issue, all that would have to be done is reclassify the processor as a lower level processor. The install image is called i386, not i686, so one gets the impression that any intel like processor, i386 or above should work. If there is a way to force the installer to use a different processor model, I'd be happy to try it to prove this one way or the other. -- Epia-M6000 display problems & hang https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/357900 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 357900] Re: Epia-M6000 display problems & hang
I am not sure that xorg is correct. My guess is that the installer is misidentifying the processor on this board. This computer uses a via processor (Samuel 2) that is one instruction (cmov) short of a 686 processor. It appears that every linux I have installed fails because the installer identifies this processor as a 686 and installs code that uses cmov. Of course it is quite possible I'm completely wrong about this. -- Epia-M6000 display problems & hang https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/357900 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 572104] Re: Can't install when Sony FW900 is connected
I looked up the ATI All In Wonder Radion, it has 32 MB of memory. I also looked up the memory chips on the board and verified that it actually has 4 8MB memory ICs on it. The mode Ubuntu tries to use when nomodeset is used is 2304x1440. This is a bit under 10 MB at 24 bit color, so it is not insufficient memory that is causing display problems even if it is using 32 bit color. The display works when the resolution is dropped to 2048x1280, but I know of no way to change the login screen resolution. -- Can't install when Sony FW900 is connected https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/572104 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-ati in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Adding nomodeset did not fix the problem, but it did change it back to the problem I had in 9.10. The screen is no longer garbage, but a narrow strip on the left edge is duplicated in columns across the screen. The login screen is unreadable, but I can guess what it is displaying and login. Once logged in, the screen was also screwed up the same way (see attached), but I was able to guess where the menu item was for screen resolution, guess where the open window was and drag it into the visible part of the screen, then drop the resolution to 2048x1280 which does display properly. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 572104] [NEW] Can't install when Sony FW900 is connected
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg (This is my second attempt to enter this, First attempt was discarded due to a "timeout" error by Launchpad) When the Sony GDM-FW900 monitor is connected to this computer, The install sequence fails immediately after the first menu with a garbage screen. If I use a different (lower resolution) monitor, The install procedure succeeds. If I then switch back to the sony monitor, the login screen is garbage. The video card is an ATI All in Wonder Radion. I suspect that Ubuntu is attempting to set a resolution that the video card can't handle. This combination of video card and monitor has been working together for years in Windows 2000, and ubuntu 9.10 when I was able to set a lower resolution. If someone could tell me how to limit the login screen resolution (what file to edit, and what to change), I think I can make this combination work. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 440233] Re: fglrx fails at startup because of missing amdpcsdb.default + removal leaves bad settings in Xorg.conf
I have solved my problem. Deleting /etc/ati and reinstalling the ati driver did not help. although the /etc/ati directory got created, there was nothing in it. swapping hard disks, creating a clean install of Ubuntu, updating & installing the hardware driver, then copying amdpcsdb and amdpcsdb.default to the /etc/ati directory of the old hard drive, got something that would boot and work, but with that annoying AMD testing use only bug in the lower right hand corner. uninstalling the hardware driver, copying the entire /etc/ati from the clean install then re-installing the hardware driver FINALLY got me a working system. -- fglrx fails at startup because of missing amdpcsdb.default + removal leaves bad settings in Xorg.conf https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/440233 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to fglrx-installer in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

I am also having this issue. ATI 4850HD 64 bit ubuntu. I know the root cause of my troubles: I foolishly tried to install the ATI driver from the ATI website (version 9.10) I tried to uninstall it and was stuck with dead keyboard and my monitor in sleep mode. I SSHed into my computer and re-installed the broken ATI driver, that got me something that would at least boot. tried uninstalling again, this got me to a boot that gave me errors, but allowed me to boot in safe video mode. In safe video mode, I re-installed the hardware driver via the "Hardware Drivers" option. This left me stuck with the "missing PCS defaults file /etc/ati/amdpcsdb.default". I copied the "amdpcsdb.default.dpkg-bak" file to "amdpcsdb.default", and got something that boots, but now I am stuck with a bug in the lower right corner of my screen that says: "AMD Testing use only Unsupported hardware" -- fglrx fails at startup because of missing amdpcsdb.default + removal leaves bad settings in Xorg.conf https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/440233 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to fglrx-installer in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
