In the Debian sid package xkb-data 2.12-1, the bug *is* corrected
(Ubuntu is still at 2.10). I did install it in 14.04 and test with the
Belgian alternate keyboard (based on the French). Both Ctrl keys do act
as Ctrl.
I do not understand the thing that would be nice to have above, but it
is not an issue any more for Debian testing or for Debian unstable.

A site like linuxfr.org may well be a vocal minority in itself. Nothing proves
that linuxfr.org is representative of ordinary users. And even on linuxfr.org I
have seen posts saying "where is my CRTL-R gone?" or "my keyboard is broken
since some new version of Ubuntu".
In a way, suppressing one of the customary CTRL keys is intrinsically a
minority point of view.
[Furthermore, the French layout for the Belgian keyboard depends on the French
layout for the French keyboard. I do not see why a discussion on linuxfr.org
should decide that Belgians have no use of right CTRL.]

I doubt having a right CTRL key ever generated hate mail. That hate mail
was about other questions.

We are not here discussing space bar, but right CTRL. Is right CTRL
modular? Is there an option easily accessible to the ordinary user to
restore right CTRL?

The clamor is not against proper French of for removal of anything.
Furthermore, how could an ordinary user "try to design a solution"? The user
wants a common PC keyboard with CTRL keys, without having to write the code
himself. The clamor is: do what you can to allow writing proper French —and
thank you for your trying to do it— but leave the right CTRL.
---
If no agreement can be reached, would it be possible to have the old layout
accessible, even under another name? I do not know how many variants are
allowed, by design, or by freedesktop conventions. Of course a new variant
would be useless if it didn’t appear in the choices offered to an ordinary user
by the most popular GNU Linux distributions.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 221112]

2014-04-19 Thread Dominique Meeùs
I feel extremely uneasy because I am a user of free software and I am
full of respect and gratitude for the people who make this possible,
including of course Nicolas Mailhot. I am an amateur and I am conscious
that I rely entirely on the work of devoted paid and unpaid
professionals.

But in this case, I must crudely say, because it was hinted that we
should have a vote: the vote already happened, here in Bugzilla, and in
Launchpad, and elsewhere in many forums. The result obviously is:
Nicolas Mailhot against the rest of the world.

I think the rest of the world constitutes a majority compared to Nicolas
Mailhot alone. Therefore one should immediately revert to the last good
version with two Control keys.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1013881] Re: Right-Ctrl key broken on French OSS keyboard

2012-06-20 Thread Dominique Meeùs
Sorry, pushed some wrong key.

[The choice…] was between 2.5-1ubuntu1 (precise) and 2.5-1ubuntu2
(precise-proposed). On https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuUpdates,
I read: « Enabling the proposed updates repository can break your
system. It is not recommended for inexperienced users. » I didn’t know
this. I unchecked Proposed in my updates choices for the future.

The update was introducing "level5(rctrl_switch)" in response to a long
complicated discussion
(https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15804) about some
applications using some Ctrl+space shortcut. To me it seems that
everybody expects to have two Ctrl keys on a regular PC keyboard.
Suppressing the right Ctrl should be an option for those who need it,
not the default.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 185600] Re: openoffice repeatedly freezes after resuming laptop from sleep

2011-01-14 Thread Louis-Dominique Dubeau
Ok, so this is happening again in 10.10. I've noticed a few more things
though:

1. This bug sometimes causes X to crash. I've experienced it a few
minutes ago. I had resumed from suspend maybe 4 hours ago and worked on
a bunch of things in Emacs, Firefox and Evolution and a few other X
clients (like xpdf). Then I turned to Open Office writer to check
something in a document. The document was very slow to scroll. Writer
was in effect exhibiting the symptoms described earlier in this bug
report.

After paging up maybe 4 or 5 times, X crashed.

The only X client started before the suspend-resume cycle and which
showed any trouble was Open Office. (Emacs, FF, Evolution were also all
started before the suspend-resume cycle: no problem with them.)

2. The soffice.bin process remained running from the previous X session.
Note that everything else which was X related died when the X session
died. Only, soffice.bin remained. Running oowriter from the command line
does nothing. The old soffice.bin must be killed before OO can be used
again.

3. I checked to see whether the HD was being accessed abnormally (e.g.
thrashing) but did not see anything abnormal there.

Why did I not experience X crashes before? I think the answer is just
that in the past, I would very quickly close OO as soon as I experienced
the bug so I was removing the opportunity for a crash. This time, I
insisted on scrolling to a bit of text I needed to cut and paste to
emacs. I thought I was really close to the passage I wanted to cut and
paste but I was wrong and X crashed before I could get there.

It may also have to do with the document I was scrolling. This is the
largest OO document I have. It also happens to contain about as much
Chinese as English. So of all the documents I work with this is the one
which is most taxing on oowriter.

Here are the results of apt-cache policy on the usual suspects:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 638410] Re: maverick - X or kdm freezes after boot nVidia Geforce 7050

2010-10-06 Thread Dominique Lebrun
Same kind of problem here:
Whether I try to install Kubuntu 10.10 RC (Ubiquity installer) or just to test
it with the live CD, the system freezes. By freezing, I mean:
- no refresh of the screen
- keyboard not responding (even the "NumLock" key)
- mouse pointer still movable, but click doesn't work
The only thing left to do is to hit the reset button of my computer.
Actually, I've experienced the same problem with versions 10.04 and 10.04.1.
I suspect this could have something to do with the nouveau driver.
My computer has an Intel Pentium Dual Core CPU and a NVidia GeForce 6600GT
graphic card.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 83142] Re: crash on XSetIMValues() call when using xim and esperanto locale

2010-07-04 Thread Dominique Pellé
I just installed Ubuntu-10.04 (from scratch) and I see that this bug is
still present.

Two files /usr/share/X11/locale/{locale,compose}.dir contain "eo_XX" which
should be replaced with "eo" since both Debian and Ubuntu now use Esperanto
locale eo.utf-8 (they were using eo_XX.utf-8 several releases ago, not sure
when change was made).
However, this change to Esperanto locale was not made in
/usr/share/X11/locale/{locale,compose}.dir

I attach the simple patch for Ubuntu-10.04 to correct it. I verified
that is solves the problem.

** Patch added: "patch to fix esperanto locale bug"

2009-07-02 Thread Louis-Dominique Dubeau
I experience the same symptoms. I was not able to test it on 8.10
because my USB keyboard was not around. I'm running 9.04 now and ever
since I started using my USB keyboard again, I've had this issue. I
believe the issue was absent in 8.04 but I'm not 100% sure about that.

Here is an symptom I've noticed but which I think has not been reported
yet. I've set hitting "Left Shift" and "Right Shift" together a hot key
to toggle the keyboard layout, but:

1. If I hit the hot key on the USB keyboard, it is ignored.

2. If I hit the hot key on the internal laptop keyboard when the USB
keyboard is plugged in, the keyboard layout applet switches between
"USA" and "??" instead of "USA" and "CAN".
