Criticising the OP's writing style, however witty you think your pun may be,
adds nothing to solve the problem of the OP. An on-topic reply with a
relevant footnote about netiquette is far more useful to newbies who may be
driven away by your equally distasteful attempt at humour.

Right click on the tab of the sheet you want to rename, and select

This must be a Linux thing (or Mac ?). I moved to 3.2 on Windows XP Pro and
on Vista Home Premium without this difficulty. Perhaps the OP is using a
Linux-distro-specific version of OOo instead of the "official" version from
the OOo web site ?

What greyscale icons? Where? Not in Writer's toolbars - at least not on Win

The logo. Right. Having the right logo is really going to make the
difference with respect to USERS and the branding of OOo.

The major usability problem created by this decision (to ignore the
obvious fact that it was a bad decision to switch to greyscale icons and
to resolve the issue by simply switching back) is absolutely and without
question a branding problem. Do you not understand that every day that
goes by, someone decides to download the latest version of OOo, gives it
a try, and the first thing they see is that the icons are greyscale,
which causes a lot of laughter while they are uninstalling it (because
it is 'old fashioned', 'doesn't support color', 'not modern', etc etc
are the ones I've heard). I know - I have had people tell me this. I no
longer even recommend Openoffice, and will not start doing so again
until this is fixed, and I am not alone in this.

> That way the general branding guidelines can be finished as well.

Until the color icons are returned, OOo branding is BROKEN.

I get so tired of hearing this... it simply is not true. Just bring the
old ones back now (or preferably, colorize the new ones using the same
colors as the originals), then you can take your time with what you will
replace them with. There is absolutely ZERO reason why you cannot do
this, except one - someone doesn't want to.

The fact that no one in a position to do something about this HASN'T
done anything about this just reflects on the impression that most of us
have had about the OOo process for the many years - none of the OOo
developers give a rats behind what the users want or think.

> It will only confuse people even more and it would be negative for
> the image that we want to create.

This is merely your opinion, and it is quite simply WRONG. Proof? Read
the bug discussion for Issue 112141. This issue broke all records for votes:

1. confirmed by votes after only 40 MINUTES

2. more than 100 votes in one WEEK, and

3. with 242 votes, now, after less than 4 MONTHS, has more votes than
any/all other issues save 3 - and all 3 of those were opened more
than 9 YEARS ago, which means they probably will never be resolved.

So, please, don't tell me this isn't important to the user base, isn't a
branding issue, and, aside from purely political/personal motivation(s),
cannot be at least temporarily resolved by reverting to the previous
icons or colorized versions of the new ones.

Oh, and as for this comment:

> I had begun a long response, too, to B's post, but got distracted by

This illustrates precisely my above point about the developers not
caring what the users want or think.

My comments about this issue are very on point for OOo branding, and are
NOT 'insect buzz', save to those with their heads stuck in the sand.

Yep, confirms this is deut to the wise decision to remove the ability to
associate Microsoft Office files with OOo in t he GUI installer.

Older versions took over these associations by default, but you could
UNcheck them in the GUI. Then they made the default with them UNchecked
- then they removed these options from the GUI installer altogether.

Obviously someone on the OOo development team simply doesn't care how
badly they screw things up for users (as evidenced by the brain-dead
decision to switch from colored icons to greyscale)...

If your documents are saved in Microsoft Office formats, this is due to
the very wise decision by the OOo developers to remove the GUI option to
associate Office docs with Openoffice.

Otherwise, it should have at least associated itself with its own native
formats...

The default for new installs is

The problem I see it that you got a POP_UP asking you to update/upgrade

I have never seen a pop-up asking me to update OOo, so that may
be the key to the problem.

Where did you go to get the update?

Could you have gotten some type of nasty thing on your system that
caused the pop-up and did some nasty stuff?

I would use an anti-virus on your system, then download the newest version
from the web site of www.openoffice.org. User the control panel programs
icon and un-install OOo and then restart your system. Then use your newly
downloaded install file from OpenOffice.org web site to install the
clean version.
See if that does the trick.

Hi, OpenOffice 3.1/3.2 can read documents saved with previous versions
of OpenOffice, so you should have no problem at all.
Just open the folder where you have your documents and doubleclick on a
document. It should open with your new OpenOffice version.

If you want OpenOffice.org to save a spreadsheet in Excel format you need
to
ask it specially; it doesn't do that by default. You need to use File>Save
As, then select the appropriate MS format (Excel 97, Excel 95 or Excel 5),
then ensure that the little "Automatic filename extension" box is ticked
(checked) and then enter the name you want to give the spreadsheet without
any ".xls" extension.

OpenOffice.org uses ODF format (Internationally accepted ISO standard)
unless told otherwise.

If you want to change the default i.e. to have OpenOffice.org *always*
save
in Microsoft format (unless told otherwise for a particular case), go to
Tools>Options>Load/Save>General and choose the relevant format for each
type
of dcument - two drop down lists ("Document type" and "Always save as")
near
the bottom of the pane.
