Re: [vbox-users] VirtualBox.exe: 98% cpu usage

2008-05-23 Thread Gaurav Verma
Ive seen that on windows XP and vista too with version 1.5.6. Vbox sure seems
to take a huge chunk of the host machine's CPU.. This is certainly one think
that needs to get fixed in the current and future releases.

Subject: [vbox-users] VirtualBox.exe: 98% cpu usage

Hello,

I have vbox-1.6 installed on a Windows XP host and a linux gentoo guest
fully functional. More often than not, VirtualBox.exe suddenly takes up
98% of the CPU usage. The Windows machine becomes very slow and I have
to shutdown the linux guest, quit vbox, wait for the CPU usage return
not normal and start everything from the beginning.

Is there a fix for this or a reason for this sudden race?

Thanks,

Re: [vbox-users] VirtualBox.exe: 98% cpu usage

2008-05-23 Thread JD
I have the same problem with both hosts:
win xp and Fedora 7. Running the guest and doing
any useful kind of work on the guest, especially
when doing disk io and/or net io, it sucks up from
70 to 100% of my amd64 3700+ cpu. This
is my experience with VB 1.5.x and the current
1.6.

Ok, that's interesting...

I don't know what effect the size hint had, if any. It didn't change the
size of the window and it didn't cause the new size to appear in the
screen resolution preferences. But...

Apparently I haven't tried resizing the VirtualBox window recently,
perhaps not since I added the guest additions. It used to be that
when I resized the window or went to full screen mode, the OpenSolaris
screen remained the same size and was centered in the VirtualBox window.

Now the OpenSolaris screen changes size, including using the whole screen
in full screen mode!!! Cool!

I still don't know how to get additional choices in the screen resolution
preferences, but with the ability to resize the screen that's not an important
issue for me anymore.

Thanks for your help!!!

I've got VirtualBox OSE running smoothly on i386 and x86_64 hardy
machines (from hardy universe, version 1.5.6-dfsg-6ubuntu1), have
you tried that version?

Not necessary now. :-)

That was the key. Once I killed that, everything started normally.

Oh! I missed that. Could you do a full stracd with

  strace -f -o ~/log -s128 VirtualBox

Make sure that no VBoxSVC processes running before you start. Then
compress this log file and send it to me via private E-mail.

on the host? Unload the kernel module.

[vbox-users] Cloning VDI w/o snapshot

2008-05-23 Thread c . monty
Hi!
I'm running WinXP SP2 on guest system.
After finishing basis installation I've created a snapshot -> basis.

The current state however includes much more data.

Now, my intention is to set up an additional (new) VM_new with basis settings
of the previously installed VM_old and to keep the currently used VM_old, too.

How do I have to proceed to clone the basis system (1st snapshot) and use this
for a fresh VM?

Re: [vbox-users] screen resolution problem with OpenSolaris 2008.05 on VirtualBox 1.6

2008-05-23 Thread Michael Thayer
Hello Bill,

Sending a size hint using VBoxManage while a VM is running (e.g.
'VBoxManage controlvm setvideomodehint 1280 1024 32') should work, and
should override the limitation. Fullscreen mode and resizing the window
using the mouse are also not affected.

Regards,

Michael

Following this idea, and as I use Fedora, I'd like to know if there's any
"build script" to automatically download the source from SVN, compile it,
and then create a RPM from the svn sources. In other words... is whatever
build script you use to make the RPMs available for us the public/end-user
community?. Could that be adapted to donwload the latest greatest from SVN
first?.

It would be great to have a script one can invoke (even in the background)
and obtain different versions say every week, creating
vbox-date-MM-DD-YY.rpm files, so one can track development progress and test
new features or bugfixes from those RPMs (built from SVN source) without
having to do the SVN download manually.

Thoughts? Comments?.
Thanks,
FC
