I have more than one e-mail address, so that happens to me as well. If I

Hey all. This is just a friendly reminder that hijacking a thread is not the
way to start a new message. What this means is if you are reading a message
and you reply to that message, and erase everything you are replying to and
then write your own question which has nothing to do with the message you
are replying to, that is hijacking and it shouldn't be done.

I will put people on moderation if they are found to be hijacking message
threads. If you want to write something to the list, please use the compose
button on your iDevice, or control-n in your email program in Windows. And
of course what ever the new message hot key may be in other systems. Please
don't press reply in an existing message and then write about something
completely different. It's a bit off putting to be reading about the Nook
app and then from nowhere, there is a question about how to use the Apple TV
in the same thread.

If you are hijacking threads because you don't know the list address, it's
viphone@googlegroups.com so you will have it.

Thanks, and if you have questions about this, please email me privately.

I'm not sure what you're asking. To set the speech rate you can go into
Settings -> General -> Accessibility -> VoiceOver and change the rate
there, or continue on into Roter and add speech rate to your roter
options. I think the actual speech rate is your own preference.

To change the rodar, put two fingers on the screen an inch or so
apart, and turn them in a clockwise or counter clockwise manner, like
turning a knob on a radio dial, if anyone remembers those. This is how
you change the rodar to a different setting, then use the up or down
flicking gesture to adjust the value or move by that set amount. For
instance, if you changed the rodar to words, you would flick down to
move by word. If you change the rodar to adjust value, you could flick
up or down to move to a different value.

Hope this makes sense,
Wayne

Are you sure that the rodar is set to adjust value and not to
characters or words? I've had this problem on web pages, and rebooted
my phone. turns out my rodar had been changed somehow from adjust
value to something else and that was causing the problem.

Re: a list of questions regarding apple certified courses.

2012-12-11 Thread John Panarese
Apple offers several different types of certification exams. Many are
specific to their major applications, like Logic Pro and so forth. However,
there are, to my knowledge, 3 major certification exams.
1. Mountain Lion Essentials
2. Mountain Lion Server Essentials
3. Apple Hardware Essentials
These exams are held by Apple Certified Training Centers. You can, I
believe, take them online, but for a blind person, this option is not
advantageous. There are several screen shots used on the exam, and, thus, one
would need a reader to have the exam read to them. Having gone through the
process, it's a matter of finding a center willing to provide an accessible
accommodation and, more importantly, a reader who knows the Mac and can
describe things well enough for you to understand them.

I believe the exams are either $150 or $200 to take. Once you have the
certification, you are considered an Apple Support professional. In theory,
you could work for an Apple store as a specialist.
There are the simple answers to your questions.

Re: using nook

2012-12-11 Thread Penny Reeder
Hi Heather, Try closing the app (take it out of the App Switcher.)
Then, when you open up the app again, go to the library and see if the
books you purchased are there. If you continue to have problems, call
the B&N Customer Service Number that's on the web site page -- they
are very helpful.

RE: Apple TV to Stereo

2012-12-11 Thread Richard Turner
A quick google search for HDMI to RCA gave me several results that seem to
range from around $8.00 to $60.00.

The first one was to Best Buy.

There were results for amazon and New Egg as well.

Hi.
Keep in mind that I don't have one. I'm also not quite sure what

Hi, all.
I recently read a review at
http://www.pocketables.com/2012/12/accessory-review-mycharge-peak-6000-porta
ble-power-vault.html
relating to this product
http://www.mychargepower.com/whats-new/peak-6000.html
I have not bought this, so do not speak from personal experience,
but both the reviewer and the product page say that speech notification of
status is included. That Is, one is informed as to the unit charging, when
it provides power to whatever device is plugged in, and also as to what the
status of the battery may be at any particular time. This may be of use to
someone here, the battery status and charging status are generally not
accessible on most devices.
HTH.

Apple Bluetooth Keyboard

2012-12-11 Thread Noe Villeda
Hello Listers,

I just purchased the Apple bluetooth keyboard to use with my iPhone 4.
I have it paired with the phone and I can scroll through the choices, such
as in contacts, how do I select a specific contact? I enter and I get no
response, nor is the contact selected.
I was trying to find a user's manual for the keyboard online, but haven't
had much luck finding it.

I'd appreciate any help.

Hello,
I ended up purchasing this speaker.
Of all of the speakers that I have purchased, this speaker is the
best.
It is small in size, but is easy to use and have very good sound
quality.
On one side of the speaker, there is a slot that will hold your
phone, and
on the other side, there is a jack to plug the cable in that goes
from the
phone to the speaker, and next to that is a mini usb where the
cable goes to
charge the unit.
And next to these two is a switch to turn your speaker on and
off.
The volume is controlled by your device, and I have cranked this
unit up
quite loud, and love the quality.
I definitely suggest that you get this speaker, as I say, it was
the best
purchase I have made in a while.

Re: using nook ... Kindle books

2012-12-11 Thread Ann Byrne

Are Kindle books in a format the iPhone can read without the Kindle app?
At 09:24 PM 12/9/2012, you wrote:

Hi Heather,
You need to set up an account on the b&n website. Then you either
acquire free nook books or purchase them using your pc or Mac and
the v&n site with your account that you just set up. Once you have
books available, you sign in to the Nook app using the username and
password you used when you registered on the b&n website. Then you
set the filter in the Nook app to all items or just books, if you
didn't get any magazines, and you'll see all your available titles
appear. Double tapping a title causes it to download. Once you're
done, you can set that filter to downloaded items only. And to
answer your other question, No, the Kindle app is definitely 100%
not usable, and you can get your e-books with either the Nook or the
iBooks apps for reading on the ios device.

Voiceover question

2012-12-11 Thread Shane Clark
Hi,
Has anyone noticed this or had this happen? Sometimes, not often, but it seems
that when using my 4S, it sounds like Vo is turned up all the way, when its not
been. After it says something, there's like a slight hiss. Sometimes I have to
reboot and its fine, other times, it goes away. Anyone experienced this or
heard of this?
Thanks.

Re: friendly Moderator's reminder about hijacked threads

If you have ore than one email addi, tabbing back once to the From field
and you get a selector to choose the right, hwich is to say, the addi you're
subscribed by. then tab down and do the rest. The number of times I fell
for that!

So yes, I click reply, then clear out all previous content and subject and
start over. If there's any trace after that, the mail server is smarter or
dumber than I thought.

On iOs, the sender, your name and addi, show up just below the cc/bcc
heading, so you can tap that to change it. Wort remembering what you
subscribed as, though in this csae, since you had to burrow down to the
right mailbox, it will default to that for compose anyway.

Re: my iPhone is lost

2012-12-11 Thread Helena
Oh yes, I have been in the same situation with a car gps, where the cab
driver has driven in circles. So that isn't an error, exclusively made by
IPhones. I haven't tried mine out yet, and if it wasn't for all that yucky

That is a perfect example of why one should never depend on GPS systems
exclusively.
If you were going somewhere you had never been before, you would have
followed it the wrong way until you either circled back or had to call
someone to find out the right way.
This problem is not only on iPhones, but in car GPS systems as well.
You may have simply lost enough satellites that the GPS could not get a
fix

on your actual position.
Unfortunately, the iPhone GPS apps do not tell you about the number of
satellites or the estimated accuracy, where the designated blindness GPS
systems do.

It is a good thing you knew how to get to your house.

Hello.
I know of no utility that will let you accessibly read mobi files on iOs. It
is, however, easily possible to convert mobi files to epub which can, of
course, be read in iBooks. The quickest and most private method of
conversion which I've seen is through caliber. Try

Hello.
I know of no utility that will let you accessibly read mobi files on iOs. It
is, however, easily possible to convert mobi files to epub which can, of
course, be read in iBooks. The quickest and most private method of
conversion which I've seen is through caliber. Try
http://calibre-ebook.com/ and the manual for accessible conversions through
Calibre is at http://manual.calibre-ebook.com/cli/ebook-convert.html
I hope that's of use.

Re: Basic wireless blue tooth keyboard and the IPhone-4s.

2012-12-11 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hi, you don't need to use iTunes or your computer in order to connect
the keyboard to the phone. If you have the Basics Amazon Bluetooth
keyboard, you might want to give the following audio podcast a listen as
I demonstrate how to do this.

Thanks.

Hi, if you are on level 5, you need to go more. Usually you can do the

Hi there, when you are in a mission and it shows you what you need, yes
it's true that it shows pictures. The way around this is to just do the
mission. When you don't have the required items it will show you in text
what those items are. It also gives you the chance to purchase them
right there and then. Once you have them, you can press the do mission
button and you will do the mission.

I hope that helps. Also, you might take a look at the Storm8 podcasts I
did a while back. There are two of them. Normally you can get the links
from my site, but I'll provide them here since I'm reconstructing my
site right now.

Rob, if you do what you describe, that is hijacking a thread. The reason
it's caught is due to the thread header which is placed in replied
messages. Please see the following links if you are interested in

In a word, no. Sorry. Kindle is not accessible now on the mac or the IPhone.
Kindle books are in mobi format, and Nook and Ibooks are in various Epub
formats.

You need to set up an account on the b&n website. Then you either acquire

you sign in to the Nook app using the username and password you used when
you registered on the b&n website. Then you set the filter in the Nook
app to all items or just books, if you didn't get any magazines, and
you'll see all your available titles appear. Double tapping a title
causes it to download. Once you're done, you can set that filter to
downloaded items only. And to answer your other question, No, the Kindle

either the Nook or the iBooks apps for reading on the ios device.

I bought a basic blue tooth wireless keyboard to use with my phone. I'm
planning to take it to the ATT store to get help hooking it up; however,
does the phone need to be hooked up to my computer and to ITunes in order
to hook up the wireless keyboard to the phone? I hope I am making sense.

Re: question: checking in at home on Foursquare

2012-12-11 Thread Christopher Chaltain
OK, try the following:

1) Open up Four Square and click on the Check In button at the top of
the screen.
2) Double tap on the search field and type something in there, like
"Mary Ellen's Place".
3) Now swipe right through the list of potential matches. Eventually
you'll get to an unlabelled button followed by the text "Add this place
so others can check in here." Below this button is the list of places
near your current location, so this button is in the middle of two
potentially long lists.
4) Click on the unlabelled button and you can add your place.

Great plan special for Canadians with Koodo or Fido

2012-12-11 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hello fellow Canadians,

I just wanted to pass this along since I was told about it yesterday and
just changed my plan. Here are the 3 scenarios under which you can take
advantage of this:

1. You have to be an existing customer of Fido (which belongs to
Rogers) or Koodo (which belongs to Telus).

2. If you are not an existing customer and want to switch you have to
make sure you are not under contract any more with your previous provider
and, of course, your iPhone has to be unlocked. If you have an iPhone and
have fulfilled your contract you can officially request unlock instructions
and once you are unlocked you can go where you please.

3. If you want to switch to Koodo or Fido as a new customer and buy an
iPhone from them you can do this. I am not sure about Fido, but Koodo will
not lock you into a plan, however, they won't give you quite as good a deal
on the phone, either. If you are a new customer, they will give you $150 off
your phone. This means that for an iPhone 5 16 Gig which costs $670 here in
Canada, you would pay $520. If you sign up for a 3-year contract with Telus
you can get the same phone for $199 I believe, but then you are locked in
for 3 years. With Koodo once you have a plan, 10% of your plan cost every
month is applied to what they call your "Tab". The $150 they give you up
front and if you were to cancel your service with them after a few month you
would have to pay out whatever balance is left from the $150 less the
portion that was applied to that from your tab. If you bring your own phone
to them, then 10% each month are accumulated and if you want to buy a new
phone let's say in a year, you have whatever that balance is available.

Anyhow, I don't want to get into this any further, what I really wanted to
let everybody know is the promotion they have right now.

You get unlimited Canada wide calling any time (long distance and airtime),
unlimited texting, call display, voice mail and 2 Gigabytes of data for $56
a month + tax.

This is a super deal, I was a Koodo customer before and paid $55 just for
the unlimited calling, texting, call display and voice mail. I then had a
data flex plan which depending on how much I used (I don't use very much0)
cost me another $10 or $15 a month which means my total bill was usually $65
or $70 a month. Now I get everything I had before + 2 Gig of data for $1
more than I paid before for just the voice plan. I save $9 or $14 a months
and had I actually used close to 2 Gigs of data on the plan I had I would
have paid $30 more than what I am now paying on this promo.

I heard Fido is offering the same for $54 or $55 so even a Dollar or 2 less.

I am not sure what Telus, Bell and Rogers are currently offering, but I used
to be with Telus and always paid $70 or $75 and I didn't have the unlimited
calling/airtime so I always had to think whether the call I was about to
make was covered under the plan I had with Favourite Numbers, Free
Evening/Weekend Air Time, a certain number of daytime airtime minutes, 100
long distance minutes etc. I like the fact that with Koodo it doesn't matter
if I call during the day or on a weekend, whether it's local or long
distance or whether I am in my local area or not. As long as I am in Canada
it makes no difference and while I think it's not truly unlimited, I have
never used it all up.

Regards,

Sieghard

RE: channeling voice over through the Plantronics Discovery 975-R Bluetooth Headset

2012-12-11 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Stuart,

If Voiceover doesn't come through the headset it probably means the headset
does not support the A2DP profile. This is required for Voiceover to come
through the headset and while most new bluetooth earpieces nowadays have it,
a few don't and I think the Plantronics you mentioned is an older model. In
any case, there is no setting, Voiceover will come out of your headset
automatically if the headset supports A2DP.

Sieghard

Hello Listers,

I know that many people here asked about making ringtones and I thought I
post this. I have the "App of the Day" app. It's a free app and each day at
some point in the morning you get a push notification about an app that is
free for that day. I know there are many other apps like this out there, but
today the free app is called "Rington Architect". It allows you to create
ringtones from your music library on your iPhone. It seems the app is quite
accessible. When you first open it you have 3 choices, "Creat RingTones",
"Manage RingTones" and "btn Help".

If you double tap on Create Ringon all the songs on you riPhone are
displayed in alphabetical order. Pick one and you see a screen with the song
title and length at the top. Then you have a time readout on the left with a
< "less than symbol" to the left and a > "greater than symbol" to the right.
That time that is displayed on the left is your start time and by default it
is 0 seconds. If you swipe right past the > symbol, you see the duration
which by default is 40 seconds, the maximum length a rington can be. To the
right of that is your end time and it once again has a < and a > on each
side so you can double tap on either one and adjust it. If, for example, the
start time is 0 then the end time is 40 seconds as the ringtone is 40
seconds long. You can double tap on the < symbol to the left of the end time
read out and change the end time, for example, to 38 seconds, then this
automatically reduces the length to 38 seconds as well. If you make the
start time greater than 0 seconds, e.g. you double tap on the > sign to the
right of the start time and set it to 5 seconds, the end time automatically
goes to 45 seconds. The increments are super tiny, only one tenth of a
second, so if you want to change the start time to 10 seconds you have to do
a lot of tapping, 10 taps only changes it by 1 second. It's easiest to split
tap, i.e. find the > symbol to the right of the start time, hold a finger on
it and tap with a second finger, you can tap pretty much as fast as you like
as long as you don't move the finger on the > symbol.

The app also fades the song at the end and you can set that, I haven't
played around it it, though. Then at the bottom you have a "Play" and "Save"
button. Once you adjusted the time the way you want you an play the ringtone
and it will play the part of the song you selected. If you like it the way
it is you can double tap on Save, if not adjust start and end time until you
are satisfied. After you save it, double tap OK, then go back at the top
left of the screen and go to "Manage Ringtones". Here you can rename the
ringtone or email it to you in order to copy it into youriTunes library. You
can also use iTunes File Sharing to grab the ringtones from your phone and
copy them into the ringtones folder.

Only thing that so far I found is not accessible is the file name of your
ringtone. Voiceover doesn't read anything, but if you create one at a time
and email it to you, then delete it it's not a problem and if I have time
I'll write to the developer and ask if he could take a look at making that
accessible. I am sure it won't hurt if others do so as well, but overall
this seems to be accessible and easy to use.

I also downloaded Ringtone Wizard Pro which was free on the App of the Day
promo a few weeks ago. It basically works the same way, but the interface
seems a bit more cluttered.

Oh, and Ringtone Architect is by a developer called "Mix1009" and it retains
whatever quality the original song was for the ringtone.

Regards,

Sieghard

Not looking at the app just now, but I hope that get you close enough.

If the Mail app is not running, no mail will be checked for or received or
sent. If you close the Inbox window but leave mail running minimized, you'll
get new mail and notifications. But you can't get mail without the Mail

The Gmail app from Google supports push. Version 2.0 was just released,
and it's a marked improvement over version 1.0, with support for
multiple accounts in particular. It's just another option.

BTW, I don't use it myself, but I thought the mail app on the iPhone
from Apple started supporting push in IOS 6.

The app is pretty cool, however, the help section isn't accessible at all. I

I have had this same issue a lot. AS suggested by another VO user, I
have solved it by 3 finger swiping to the left or right to change

but this usually works for me. I wish it were easier, but oh well.

I'm planning to take it to the ATT store to get help hooking it up;

copying stuff from your IPhone to your computer

2012-12-11 Thread Helena
Hi guys,

I'm considering getting a writing program for my IPhone. I like to write
stories, and would like to at least take notes on the IPhone. But is there an
easy way to copy what I've written from the Phone to the computer?

Kind regards,

Helena

You might want to try my app, AutoRingtone. I've tried to make it accessible,
and several users here have said it works for them. It lets you create talking
ringtones for caller ID using 50 text to speech voices, including Siri, which I
call Appy. There are free versions, and pro is just $.99.

Re: Basic wireless blue tooth keyboard and the IPhone-4s.

2012-12-11 Thread Ari Moisio

Hi

You need only the phone and keyboard. It's a bit tricky because you have
to enter the PIN code that phone will display and there is not much time
to do that. Prepare by looking for number keys and enter key for that.

You also have to put your keyboad into pairing mode. Usually this is done
by pressing the power key for few seconds.

On the other hand if you visit in the Apple shop pairing the keyboard is
not an issue. I have made it couple of times without sighted assistance
and it was a bit frustrating experience.

Just double tap on check in and search for your house, such as "Kathy's
House". At the end of the search list, you'll have an unlabelled button,
 and
right below that it'll say add this place so others can check in here. Just
double tap on that unlabelled button, and you'll be taken to a dialogue
where you will be able to create a new place in Four Square.

I haven't done this myself, but I guess people may want to let people know
when they're home, or they may want to let people check in when they come
over for a party or to visit. Of course, there may be a good reason to this
that I myself haven't thought of.

2012-12-11 Thread Rob Harris
I just bought an HNDX Jam. Comes in a container something like a little jam
pot. It is Mono, but it is quite powerful for it's size and good quality
sound. It must have that a/db thing someone mentioned recently as VoiceOver
came through it too. Just 3 rather subtle buttons, vol up, down and
mute/pause I think it really is, and it paused even when the device screen
was locked, but music still running. So can recommend this, though got it on
special offer in HMV in the UK; but you might find it elsewhere. Neat! Very
good grip rubber foot too.
Makes all the difference if hearing is poor, and don't want to use head
gear.

Re: New HSBC APP

2012-12-11 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hi Sieghard , the closest I can think of are the read-only services like
PageOnce and Mint.com apps which can monitor accounts for you to let you
know of low balances, when bills are due, and similar things. These are
read-only services, meaning they can't really do any transactions for
you, but they report and alert you of things and make suggestions.

There are, of course, many banks in each country and most of them have apps

accessible and I guess everybody just has to try it with the app from their
bank. Since these apps are typically free there isn't anything lost by

Re: Free ap for today: Ringtone Architect

2012-12-11 Thread Kimberly
I got this app and it is very easy to use. I was able to create a ringtone in
seconds from a track in my iTunes library on my phone. Where I encountered a
problem was when I tried to locate the ringtone I had just created. It wasn't
with the other custom ringtones on my phone. And the manage ringtones area of
the app seems very VO unfriendly as does the help file.

This could be a great little app with some tweaking for accessibility.

Re: Rolling back in an app

2012-12-11 Thread Raul A. Gallegos

Hi, what I do is the following to restore an older app.

First the setup. This has to be done before you can restore an older app.

1. Create a folder called Mobile Applications.old in the same location
as my iTunes library. This way, both Mobile Applications and Mobile
Applications.old are in the same iTunes Media folder.

2. Copy the most important apps to it. This is in case you upgrade one
which isn't working. For example I keep the Chase Mobile, Pandora, and
GV Connect apps in here just to name a few. Then when a new update comes
out I can roll back if necessary in case the newer ones aren't accessible.

Restoring the older app.

1. Find the newer app which broke accessibility from the apps section in
iTunes.

2. Delete it. iTunes will ask you if you also want to send the app to
the recycle bin. Say yes. Meaning, you don't want to keep it.

3. Close iTunes.

4. Open both Mobile Applications and Mobile Applications.old folders.

5. Copy the older app from Mobile Applications.old to the regular Mobile
Applications folder.

6. Close the Mobile Applications.old folder since you are done with it.

7. In the Mobile Applications folder, arrow to the older app you just
copied and press Enter. This will open iTunes and add the older app back
into the library.

8. Sync your phone and make sure that the older app is selected in the
apps to be synced.

A few notes to keep in mind.

1. If you are using older apps because you don't want to upgrade them,
be very careful when checking for new apps from either iTunes or from
your phone that you don't do update all. Otherwise you will have to do
this all over again.

2. If you don't have an established Mobile Applications.old folder, but
you have older apps you want to roll back to, they are going to be found
in the recycle bin, provided you haven't emptied it. So, to get them
back, open the RB and arrow to the app you want and choose restore. It
will restore to the Mobile Applications folder. You can then remove the
newer one from iTunes as described above and then simply press enter on
the restored one to add it back into iTunes. Then make sure to copy this
older app over to the Mobile Applications.old folder so you don't have
to dig it out of the RB again.

I hope these instructions help.

If you sync your apps with iTunes on your PC or MAC, you may be able

previous versions feature. The workaround involves deleting the newer
app from your iPhone and iTunes library, adding the older .ipa file
back to your library, then doing a sync. In Windows, the apps should
be stored wherever your iTunes library is stored, in a folder called
Mobile Applications.

Hi, when you create any ring tone you have to use iTunes file sharing to
download the ring tone to the pc and then add it to the iTunes library.
Then you can sync it as a ring tone to use.

Re: Free ap for today: Ringtone Architect

2012-12-11 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hi Kim, with your phone connected, arrow to devices, then tab to apps
and press space. Now tab to the file sharing area and down arrow to the
app which has your ring tone. Ring Tone Architect in this case. Now tab
once and you will see a list of files contained within the app. Now
arrow to the file you want to download. Tab to the save button and press
space. A standard save as window will open. I recommend saving it to the
automatically add files folder of iTunes. Once saved, it's on your pc.
Now iTunes will automatically add it to the tones section and when it
shows up there, you can sync it like you sync other tones.

I know someone said a while ago that there is a duck hunt game that is
accessible with voice over.
Does anyone know who the developer is?
I searched in the app store but can’t find it.

iPad Hater

2012-12-11 Thread Joe
Hello,

So I'm not really an iPad hater. Still, made you think, didn't it?

Anyway, I got an iPad 4th gen as a surprise. Honestly, I don't get it. It's
the oversized iPhone I feared. The single best feature I can point to is the
four-finger swipe to switch between apps. Otherwise, without 3G access, I
can't access Dropbox outside of wireless range. Only one of my text editors
will give me some access to the Dropbox file structure, but overall this
doesn't work as the commuter tool I was hoping for.

Where am I going wrong? Are there apps that let you read Dropbox files
outside of wireless range, or is 3G really needed to make this a viable
commuter device? I'm thinking I'd be better off upgrading to the iPhone 5
for the faster processor and 4G connections, but before selling off this
unit, I want to make sure I'm giving it a fair shake. Right now it just
feels like one big ass screen that feels more awkward than useful. Even the
greater web page range is not enough to make me admire the extra screen real
estate.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts,

Joe

Re: iPad Hater

2012-12-11 Thread Rick alfaro
Joe,

To do the things you are wanting, you will need a device with a cellular radio
which means either an iPhone, or iPad with cellular access. Personally, I
think the Mini is a great choice but from what you are saying, it sounds to me
like the iPhone 5 is the way to go for you. I have an iPhone 4s and an iPad
Mini with WiFi only so it’s kind of the best of both worlds for me without
having to spring for an additional data plan.

Best,

Re: iPad Hater

2012-12-11 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
All sarcasm aside, I do believe that both iPad and iPhone have their
place and will be useful to some and not as much to others. I think it
highly depends on the needs of the user. It's already been discussed
much on the list the differences between iPad and iPhone and why one
chooses one over the other. Personally I'm fine without the iPad and
perfectly happy with the iPhone, but someone like my wife and daughter
would really enjoy the iPad for the kinds of things you can do on it VS
the iPhone. For example, my daughter is sighted and an avid reader.
Reading books on her iPhone is not as fun as it is on the iPad because
of the text size and because of more scrolling which is done from the
iPhone, but the iPad is perfect for her socialization, email, and book
reading needs.

So, I imagine that eventually the girls in my life will convince me to
get one or both of them an iPad. Until then, scroll scroll scroll from
the iPhone. I keep telling them to just use Nook and Voice Over and let
it do all the work. Or better yet, Audible books. But no one listens to
me. .

 Hello,

So I'm not really an iPad hater. Still, made you think, didn't
 it?

Anyway, I got an iPad 4th gen as a surprise. Honestly, I don't
 get it.
It's the oversized iPhone I feared. The single best feature I can
point to is the four-finger swipe to switch between apps.
 Otherwise,
without 3G access, I can't access Dropbox outside of wireless
 range.
Only one of my text editors will give me some access to the
 Dropbox
file structure, but overall this doesn't work as the commuter
 tool I
 was hoping for.

Where am I going wrong? Are there apps that let you read Dropbox
 files
outside of wireless range, or is 3G really needed to make this a
viable commuter device? I'm thinking I'd be better off upgrading
 to
the iPhone 5 for the faster processor and 4G connections, but
 before
selling off this unit, I want to make sure I'm giving it a fair
 shake.
Right now it just feels like one big ass screen that feels more
awkward than useful. Even the greater web page range is not
 enough to
make me admire the extra screen real estate.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts,

 Joe
