Re: New
I hope you're wearing fire retardant clothing, because you're about to get flamed. Have you even tried reading any of the documentation? Please do. First, VNC is for remote operation, not gaming. I say that, just in case that is what you are thinking of doing. If you are trying to help your friends with their computers, then you need to install the Server on their computer and run the Viewer on yours. This will allow you to operate their computer just as if you were sitting at its keyboard. You will need to know their current IP address also. And, if they are going through a router you will need to know how to do "Port Forwarding" with it. If you want your friends to be able to watch or help you on your computer, then they need the viewer and you need to the server installed. You could possibly have the server on both computers if you wanted. Please, try to read some of the basic documents before asking such simplistic questions. Robert "E. RE: 1st time user
Hi, This might sound too simple however I do it all the time, I use Network Neighbourhood from the distant VNC computer and copy the files back to my computer and vice versa. I guess okay for small files etc... Using XP of course you need to have the receiving computer i.e. the VncViewer needs to have permission to receive files from the VncServer. Hi, I use DOS on my remote pcs and YES a very good point TRY ALT Enter if a black screen as this is the symptom of a DOS programme running in full screen mode when you access via VNC. Hi, I knew that using the RealVNC viewer we can access a remote computer. I have seen the source for VNCViewer written in java. but to access a remote machine we need a VNC server running on the remote computer. Do we have any of these VNC Servers written in java. Get PC Anywhere from Symantec. That's if you want direct transfer between both computers. But at around $80 per station, it may get too pricey, which is why I had to find a different solution. As far as I have been able to tell, there is no direct transfer function with RealVNC. I found a fairly easy workaround though. Setup and FTP location, or use a file storage service such as Yahoo's Briefcase service http://briefcase.yahoo.com/ . The basic idea is you can upload files from one computer, then download to the other via FTP or Briefcase. One caveat, Yahoo's Breifcase only stores upto 40mb and no singl file can be larger than 5 mb. With an FTP setup files sizes are virtually unlimited. Good luck.. Robert "Roberto F. Re: VNC through VPN
I found my answer. (MTU size) This is good to know so I will let everyone else know. I was aware of MTU, I just didn't realize VPNs were testy about them. (enough to make VNC choke) I found the following information on Netgears website, but it pertains to all networks. Setting MTU size is a process of trial-and-error: start with the maximum value of 1500, then reduce the size until the problem goes away. Using one of these values is likely to solve problems caused by MTU size: 1500. The largest Ethernet packet size; it is also the default value. This is the typical setting for non-PPPoE, non-VPN connections. The default value for NETGEAR routers, adapters and switches. 1492. The size PPPoE prefers. 1472. Maximum size to use for pinging. (Bigger packets are fragmented.) 1468. The size DHCP prefers. 1460. Usable by AOL if you don't have large email attachments, etc. 1430. The size VPN and PPTP prefer. <= My answer! woohoo :) 1400. Maximum size for AOL DSL. 576. Typical value to connect to dial-up ISPs. David Junk wrote: Simon Hobson wrote: Junk wrote: I have 2 Netgear FVS328 VPN routers connected over 2 DSL lines. I use VNC to access the office systems from home, and it can take quite a while to download the windows wallpaper if you haven't turned it off and/or reduced the bit depth that VNC is transferring. I don't know if there is anything in the protocol that might time out if a screen update takes too long. I can telnet to these ports. I can telnet to all the ports without problem. I read that ICS could be a problem on Windows2000 and XP, but it was already disabled. What I've found (using Chicken of the VNC on OS X) is that the initial screen draw is not drawn on screen until the entire screen is downloaded - so you get a long pause and black screen. If I switch between normal and full-screen modes, it draws what it has downloaded so far and so it is easy to see that the delay is due to downloading the initial window (ie wallpaper). I would suggest turning off the wallpaper and connecting at a lower bit depth and see if that helps things. Hmm.. The system doesn't have any wallpaper. VNC through VPN
Hi, I have 2 Netgear FVS328 VPN routers connected over 2 DSL lines. Their is a VPN up and running. I can ping/telnet etc from one network to the other. The problem is. When I attempt to use VNC or PCAnywhere for that matter, it connects, then stalls. It ask for the username and password then opens the application window and then fails to render anything. (black screen) It just sits there then after a couple of minutes it just disconnects. I ran Etheral and I didn't see anything wrong that I could tell. Each PC was talking back and forth in what seem to be a normal TCP connection. If anyone has any ideas would could be causing this it would be greatly appreciated. RE: Syntax for running java viewer standalone under Windows?
Perhaps I was not clear in my first post. It is possible to run the java vncviewer outside of a web browser. I was wondering where I should place the vncviewer.jar file for easy access, as it does not exist in the normal \program files\realvnc directory structure. Also, is it possible to execute the java vncviewer (outside of a web browser) and give it a parameter such as "-listen"? I don't think there is a difference between Sun and MS JAVA as far as RealVNC goes. But I have only used it with the Sun Java client downloaded from Sun's website, on Win2k sytems. As for the "standalone" mode, I'm not sure what you mean. Perhaps you are a referring to "User Mode" as opposed to "Service Mode". In Service mode RealVNC loads as a service and thus is a available even before the machine is logged onto by a user. In User mode, RealVNC does not launch until a user clicks on the RealVNC application or a shortcut is put in the Registry RUN section or Programs \ Start Up section. Assuming that traffic is able to pass freely on the required ports (580x or 590x) then the other issue may be your colour depth. I use VNC to access the office systems from home, and it can take quite a while to download the windows wallpaper if you haven't turned it off and/or reduced the bit depth that VNC is transferring. I don't know if there is anything in the protocol that might time out if a screen update takes too long. RE: SelectObject to CompatibleDC failed: The operation completed successfully. (0)
Guys, Is Alan's prognosis correct, in suggesting that the prior use of Remote Desktop or Fast User Switching has caused that behaviour? If so then we'll look into providing a more useful error response in this situation, until full XP compatibility is complete. 'Which is best' is such a difficult question - the DNS updater program I use my friend doesn't like. The one he uses, I can't get to work! Anyway, I tried several of the *freeware* ones listed at: http://www.dyndns.org/services/dyndns/clients.html And personally, I use: DynDNS-Updater by Nord Vision http://www.nord-vision.de/data/index.php?new_sprache=2&seite=58 Oh, and I applied their 'registry fix' too: http://www.nord-vision.de/download/dyndns-updater/ddusrv_autostart_fix.reg It runs as a Windows XP Service - so I installed it and have never needed to touch it. The only configuration option I changed was to make it check for a new IP address every 1 minute - rather than the default 1 hour - as I tend to diconnect and reconnect to the web quite regularly. Hope that helps. Kenton ___ VNC-List mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] To remove yourself from the list visit: http://www.realvnc.com/mailman/listinfo/vnc-list
