Re: Safari/Sidebar

2012-12-27 Thread Ronni Brown
Hi Stuart,

Have you set up the Google "Search Settings" in Safari 6.0.2?
If not:
1. Type a search in the top bar
2. Then in the resulting search results window, click on the "Cog" button on
the far right (under Sign in)
Then select "Search Settings"
3. Search Settings Window - Click "Location"
4. Type in Australia
5. Click Save

Google will then save these settings for future searches. You don't need to do
anything more.
Now in a resulting search window, if you click under Search (in Menu) > Google
Australia opens.

Cheers,
Ronni

Ken,

I refurbish older Macs and give them away to needy folks, but these
days people are only interested in machines with an Airport card. I do
do early slot-loader iMacs which I load with OS9 educational software
and if that is what you have I can use it/them. I also gift any older
digital cameras and printers which have carts which can be refilled by me.

That's fine Ronni.

I figure WAMUG is for users helping each other out and people shouldn't come to
expect/experience a professional consultant response every time; just
reasonable ideas from others users sharing their experiences and solutions.
Especially over the holiday season, and for relatively simple queries that many
of us could answer and help out newbies.

If those of us with a bit of experience share that experience, especially with
hints on how to search for answers and assist people where to go to find their
own solutions, then it takes the pressure off yourself and Daniel both short
and long term.

Now, off you go and tape up your fingers! :-) Perhaps write a date on your
taped up fingers of when you want to throw yourself back into the fray. And
it's not allowed to be tomorrow!

Hi Ronni

What happened to that break

Thanks for your recommendation. I usually buy from Daniel but know he is
enjoying a well earned break just now.

I prefer FireWire and that's what I have for my MacBook external drive. A LaCie
portable drive (also from Daniel).

Thanks for offering further help in setting up, but please sign off for a
while. Everyone will respect your decision to say "I am not available
until..."

Kind regards

2012-12-27 Thread Ronda Brown
Hi Laura,

The Portable FW800 Drive I would recommend is a "Western Digitsl 2TB
Firewire800 Drive "MyPassport Studio Portable Hard Drive".
It doesn't require power, just runs off Firewire, and is a little portable
drive. Very nice, great solid units.

<http://store.apple.com/au/product/H8393PA/A/western-digital-2tb-my-passport-studio-portable-hard-drive>

If you email Daniel Kerr MacWizardry (when he returns from his break), he can
supply these units and will give you a good price.
Email:

If you do get one I will send you details how to set it up correctly to work
with Time Machine.
They have a sleep feature, so can be set to sleep when not backing up to TM.
My Backup Strategy can be downloaded at this link:

Thanks Tim for jumping in and helping out I really did not want to answer any
WAMUG emails over my break.

Cheers,

Re: LASERWRITER 360

Hi Julie,

I note Ronni has said
>>> I don't think there is anymore I can suggest to help you, you might need to
>>> get someone to have a look at it for you, to see if is is possible to setup
>>> this Laserwriter 360 in Lion.

At
http://www.preterhuman.net/texts/computing/apple_hardware_devnotes/LaserWriter%20Select%20360.pdf
  on page 4 I found
> The LaserWriter Select 360 printer supports three communication ports:

> RS-232 25-pin serial port
> RS-422 8-pin serial port for LocalTalk
> Centronics 36-pin parallel port

You mention a nine pin. Can you download the PDF and see if yours has something
more. There might also be some hints on resetting the dial selector on the back
of the printer to cater for a different default communications setting. This
looks all complex to me, and as Ronni has suggested it might be best if you
have someone call around to get it working in your home - if it is possible.

IP Address. If your computer is connected via a cable to your printer, I hoped
there may be a setting on the printer to print out a settings report which
would tell you the IP address for the printer on your home network. However,
reading through the above PDF, it looks like it is too old to have such a
feature.

On the Apple Discussion forum I found
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2519106?
which talks about needing to buy a Parallel to USB cable and using USBTB
backend available at http://buymelunch.org/printing/usbtb/
for Snow Leopard installations.

But you are using Lion. It might still work, I don't know.

I hope this points you in a useful direction.

Tim

 Hi Jewels,

I don't think you will be able to download the software for Lion.
You can use the "Generic PostScript Printer PPD" drivers that come loaded
 with Lion OS X 10.7.5
The only one that is reliable is the "Generic PostScript".

Hello Tim

Thanks for your suggestion. I had not thought to use both Super Duper and Time
Machine. For some years I have been using Super Duper on my "elderly" MacBook
and have a separate external drive for that.

When the weather cools (being optimistic) I'll go looking for a 1TB drive.

Re: Time Machine help on MacMini

2012-12-27 Thread Tim Law
Hello Laura,

I use Super Duper and Time Machine, on different external back up disks with my
Mac Mini of a similar vintage to yours.

Super Duper does a full disk copy back up each night.
Time Machine does incremental backups each half hour or so.

They do different things and have different advantages.

If there is a fire for example, I'd be grabbing the Super Duper drive first.
Mind you, unplugging the Mini and carting that out of the house is easy as it
is almost as small as the external drive.
If I have deleted a file from early this morning, and want to retrieve it, then
I go into Time Machine.

Other family members with smallish hard drives also use the same 1Tb drive over
our family network as a Time Machine backup. ie less than 100Gb.

My suggestion is to buy a 1Tb external drive and use it exclusively for Time
Machine, and keep your current disk for Super Duper.

Tim

2012-12-27 Thread Laura Webb
Hi Ronni

Thank you. That's the advice I need.

It wasn't me that downloaded the PDF, this is my first foray into anything to
do with Time Machine. I'll stick with Super Duper for the time being and
consider the larger external drive later on.

Pleased you are taking a break. Make sure you do -:)

Kind regards

Re: LASERWRITER 360

2012-12-27 Thread Julie Bedford
Thanks Ronni
Umm, sorry but where would I locate the IP for the Laserwriter Select ?
I had it working on my old Mac with OS Leopard (Not Snow) and had it connected
via Appletalk with a cross over cable. If its of any help the cable from the
printer is
a nine pin.

After reading up on your recommendation documentation, I see it is not possible
to
use Appletalk any longer with Lion, but understand there is a complicated
alternative !!

Thanks

Re: Time Machine help on MacMini

2012-12-27 Thread Ronni Brown
Hi Laura,

The 320GB is far too small for Time Machine. What size is your Hard Drive?
It is recommended that any hard disk designated for Time Machine backups be "at
least" twice as large as the hard disk it is backing up from. You see, the more
space it has to grow, the greater the history it can preserve.

The message includes the amount of space that the backup requires; note that
it's the estimated size of the data to be backed up plus 20% (for workspace).

Also make sure an external drive is formatted correctly for Time Machine. 'Mac
OS Extended (Journaled)' and 'GUID Partition Table'.
I think you downloaded my how to: "Format & Partition your Drive to work with
Time Machine" PDF some time back.

OK I'm out of here, I need a break.

Cheers,
Ronni

Hi Ronni, (refer the topic below) Merry Christmas and New Year to you and
all the other WAMUGgers out there.

Per the topic below, I just managed to do the set up of this now (a bit
slow I know) and it all seemed to go text book easy. Which makes me
suspicious because networks setups always have been very stressful for me.

Once I set up the Extreme as the "extender", I shifted it to the room at
the back of the house where the signal was a bit weak, it seemed to hook
up with green light in around 15-20 seconds. I was expecting another
network to come up in the drop down below Airport to connect to with the
name of the "extender" but twas not the case. There was still the original
network name in the list which remained connected. Is this the "extended"
 network?

I tested the transmit rate and it has come up from ~70 to ~130 so I think
the "extender" is connected, but how can I be sure? I get transmit rate
~270 in the living area near to the Time Capsule base.

Thanks again for simple instructions Ronni.

 Regards

 Pete...

Re: Airport Extreme as a WiFi network range extender

2012-12-27 Thread Ronni Brown
Hi Pete,

If you hold down 'option' when clicking the AirPort Wi-Fi symbol in the Menu
Bar, you'll be able to see the BSSID (the wireless MAC address) of actual AP
you're connecting to, so you can determine which device you're really
connecting to.
You'll also be able to see what signaling rate you're getting, and what channel
you're on.

Cheers,

 Hi Peter,

What is the easiest way to go about setting this up?

Assuming that your AirPort Extreme is the 802.11n version, (it has a
square shape), here is how to setup the "extend" configuration with the
 Time Capsule.
The AirPort Extreme must be positioned where it can receive a good signal
 from the Time Capsule.

 On the Time Capsule:

 Open AirPort Utility
 Click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
Make sure that you have a check mark next to "Allow this network to be
 extended"
Make note of the exact Security setting that you are using
 Update to save any changes

The Time Capsule will restart and you should see a green light in 15-20
 seconds

 On the AirPort Extreme:

 Open AirPort Utility
 Click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the icons
Wireless Mode: "Extend a wireless network" (If you do not see this choice,
hold down the option key on your computer as you click on the selection
 box)
Wireless Network Name: Exact name of your Time Capsule wireless network.
(This should appear as a choice in the setup)
Enter a check mark next to "Allow wireless clients"
Wireless Security: Exact same setting as your Time Capsule wireless network
Wireless Network Password: Exact same password as your Time Capsule
 wireless Network
 Verify Password as above
 Update to save changes

The AirPort Extreme will restart and you should get a green light in 15-20
 seconds.

 Cheers,
 Ronni

Time Machine help on MacMini

2012-12-27 Thread Laura Webb
Good afternoon all on this very hot day.

I need some help please with setting up Time Machine to back up on an external
drive. My MacMini (mid 2010) was originally intended mainly as a media centre,
However I recently upgraded it to Mountain Lion and intend to make more use of
its computer capabilities. Previously I used Super Duper for backups but Time
Machine seems to make more sense.

The external drive I have is USB 320 GB (supplied by Daniel).

When I attempted a back up I was given a message that there is insufficient
room on the disk. The backup requires 259.82GB but only 123.82GB is available.
The message also adds that work space is needed for other items as well as the
actual backup. Fair enough, but is it usual for there to be such a difference
in the capacity? The external drive works well with Super Duper so I could, of
course, continue to use that as a back up system.

There is also the option, to exclude some files from the Time Machine back up,
but I have no idea how to do that or what should be excluded.

Obviously to use Time Machine I need a much larger external drive. Advice as to
what size and what brand is recommended would be appreciated.

Best wishes to all for a happy and healthy 2013. My thanks particularly to
Ronni and also to other members who so readily give advice when it is required.

Regards
Laura
