feeding that into help and you get F... A.. Help. I am aware that all
I need to do is ask the ever helpful gurus on the net and the answer
will be forth coming in the click of a mouse button. But seriously
folks why does Mail help point me in the right direction?

BTW how do I archive old mail?

having driven back 6066 kms by myself as Sue had to fly to UK where her

Ceduna to Perth in 3 days and NO i did not exceed the 100 kph I just
drove for many hours. It rained from Coober Pedy to Cocklebiddy
continuously :-( although good forb the countryside. Coming back into
WA at Cocklebiddy there was the most magnificent Rainbow that I have
ever seen 145 degrees from end to end ie almost the entire horizon and

[..big Internet café sob story deleted..]

Ok, so, the problem that Malcolm is really describing with his
Internet saga is that he is unable to send email. There are two ways
of resolving that, but I need to provide a little background first.

Sending email in an email program generates a request to a mail server
to send and email out to the person you wish to get the message to.
After the Green Card affair in the early '90s we got introduced to
SPAM. At that time you could generally connect to any mail server from
anywhere and send email to someone.

These days that is no longer the case.

The simplest way to reduce SPAM is to ensure that only known users are
allowed to use the email gateway. From an ISP perspective the easiest
way to achieve that is to only allow people who connect to the
Internet from their service to use their email server.

When you're in an Internet café, you're most likely not connected to
the Internet via your normal ISP connection, thus you are prevented
from sending email using their server.

As I said, there are two ways of resolving that:

  1. Find an email server that provides another way of authenticating
you.

  2. Bring your own email server along.

Option 1 means that you need to ask your ISP if they have a mail
server that you can connect to while roaming, and from memory, WestNet
has one of those [they do indeed, read on :-) ]

Option 2 means that you need to install a mail server, like exim,
postfix, sendmail or 20 other options.

You should note that Option 2 will at some times give you grief
because ISPs are now beginning to block email coming from anything
other than registered domains and mailing lists such as WAMUG use SPAM
filters which use blocking lists that block email from "known
spammers" - I put that in quotes, see below for why :-)

So, in this case and in most cases, it's simpler to get your ISP to
assist you with a means of authenticating yourself against their
mail-server, either using SSH, secure-SMTP or what ever scheme they've
dreamt up.

Finally, I shall even provide you with some links:

   * http://www.google.com/search?q=westnet+roaming+mailserver&safe=off
   * http://www.westnet.com.au/support/setup/

Which state that:

   * * **Roaming Mail Server* (for use when not connected to WestNet)
   * Mail/POP3/SMTP/POST/Incoming and Outgoing
   * Mail server: mailr.westnet.com.au
   * Username: Full email address
   * Password: Email address password

As for the "known spammers" - some block lists - like the one used by
WAMUG will also block infected computers, even if they are on a
corporate network that affects a whole country, so users like me will
have their mail blocked because some other user on the network has an
infected PC and the network operator has no mechanism to separate out
legitimate actual email, from a user like me who runs their own server
and from an infected machine that sends out many megabytes of SPAM. So
in the past I used option 2, and now I use both option 2 and 1, in
that my mail server sends the mail to the Optus mail server.

So, there you have it.

Cheers,

Innocent abroad :-(

2005-05-12 Thread Malcolm J McCallum

Hi everyone.

I thought it might be of some use to tell of my experiences 'on the
road'. Not being a unix guru or even a Mac guru I seem to have had all
sorts of problems , mainly to do with sending (outgoing) mail servers.
My typical approach is to walk into an internet cafe, approach the
operator and ask if I can link up to his network by DHCP or plug into
dial-up. The response is VERY variable a) "Of course, sit here and let
me know if there is anything you want, you can print on the network".
(x1) Armidale The BEST by far. b) Have you got wireless? Yes (I
had :-)),go for it. c) Yes, Oh you have a Mac, we do not support
Macs. d) No you cannot plug into our telephone system you may infect
our computers! Quorn Library in Outback South Australia e) No you
cannot connect your laptop, not here or anywhere in Byron Bay as you
will infect our Network. I tried 3 separate internet cafes and got same
reply, they must have an agreement amongst themselves. One said there
used to be a hotel that would let you do it for $25.00 a session but
they stopped doing it last year! f) on some occasions I would get
linked up DHCP and download all my mail but no way could I upload. I
would not have changed anything since the last time when it would have
worked perfectly. I rang the ever helpful Matt(God bless Matt,Peter and
wamug :-)) and he suggested putting login and password in the
appropriate place in preferences but this does not always work. The
frustrating thing is that two operators have said,"it's because it is a
Mac, get a Windoze machine". If the operator knows their outgoing SMTP
that of course, works but many of them do not know it, they just take
the money and turn the machines on and off. I get all the spam through
the [EMAIL PROTECTED] mainly drugs, very occasionally someone offering
their photos for my delectation. :-). There is nothing worse than
paying cell phone rates for porn download. :-(.

Heading for Maroochydore where we meet grandchildren. :-) Hoping to
meet Onno if we can get within Cooee of each other, might even get a
free download :-%

Yes. However I want to emphasise that westnet's service - where it
matters most - in provision of network and the absolutely best support
desk in the known universe is streets ahead of the next competitor.
For example, I recently tracked a transient DNS problem down to "most
likely" in their network - using apple's troubleshooting pages - and
an intelligent and switched on Beau twigged immmediately that I had
missed a notice about DNS number change. Somehow I just know if I
had wanted help at another isp, I would have first had to wait for
half an hour to speak 'live' and then would have got on to a timid
trainee with hearing problems ;-/

And most importantly, the support staff are all very mac inquisitive.
And too, I think everyone would agree that the reply re the flash
problem was well researched and helpful - as far as it went. By the
way, I haven't yet had a reply to their offer to follow up and in my
experience, this usually means that something is getting investigated.
If people are annoyed by the website stuff like we have pointed out,
maybe an email or two from several different mac users might tickle
management along?

Canberra to Blackheath near Katoomba

2005-04-24 Thread Malcolm J McCallum

 Dear All,

Well here we are in the Blue Mountains. We had a wonderful week in
Canberra with Sue's cousin Peter & his partner Jill. We have been to
Canberra before, but we really enjoyed this visit. We were there
particularly for Peter's 70th birthday party which was held by Lake
Burley Griffin. We visited the War Memorial Museum for an afternoon
but could, in fact, have spent the whole day there.
We also went into' Civic' in Canberra and went to the Canberra Museum
and Gallery, where Jill works. It really was fascinating. There was a
display by two artists who each had painted the same subject for three
hours. The artists used different mediums and the results were
amazing. There were about fifteen portraits and we were entranced.
On 15th April ( Sue's birthday) Peter took us to Thredbo. An
interesting drive and well worth it. The architecture at Thredbo was
most interesting and we could see the ski slopes. We passed on the
cable car ride to Mt Kosciusko as we both had a nasty virus and were
not feeling the best.
On Wednesday Peter & Jill took us to dinner at University House (ANU).
It was a wonderful evening where we met fascinating people and it was
rounded off by a talk on " How words get into the dictionary"-- most
interesting by the man who edited the McQuarrie Dictionary .

On Thursday Jill took us to see her family home which is now a museum.
It was one of the first houses built in Canberra and has remained
unchanged since 1926 and really is worth a visit. It is called
Calthorpes' House. We were so lucky to have Jill show us around and
fill us in on all of the history as well as play the pianola! Her
mother, Dawn, has written a book about her childhood in that house and
it is a joy to read. As it happened , we went and had afternoon tea
with Dawn after we had visited the house, so that was really special.
She knew that we both had birthdays in April so she had baked a cake
which was lovely. Her house and garden are lovely and so we were
really privileged to be shown around.

On the last day in Canberra we went to the National Art Gallery and saw
an exhibition by Thea Procter. It was absolutely stunning and we could
have spent all day there. When you walk out of the gallery (the old
Houses of Parliament) you look back towards the War Museum and the view
is amazing. I must say that we appreciated Canberra much more this
time and were really sorry to leave. Jill and Peter were great hosts
and we look forward to their next visit to Perth.

Having left Canberra we headed for Cowra. We stayed for four nights as
we were still recovering from some rotten bug that we took to
Canberra!. Cowra was very interesting because of the break out by the
Japanese POWs during World War II. The Japanese cemeteries in
particular were impressive. They have evidently buried all Japanese
citizens who died in Australia during the second world war in this
cemetery. There is also cemetery for the Australian soldiers. We saw
the 'Peace Bell' and also the Japanese Gardens which were stunning. We
then headed off for Bathurst as Mac wanted to drive around Mount
Panorama. I think that he was rather hoping to do it with the caravan
but we desisted.:-( I must say that the drive was " interesting"and
coming off the mountain would have been terrifying at speed. We also
went to the Fossil Museum and the Warren Somerville Mineral
collection, both housed in an old School, which was superb and must be
world standard.
We then set off for Oberon in the Blue Mountains. It was quite a climb
but a very pretty town. We decided to go and see the Jenolan Caves.
What a drive! A really steep and winding road down into the gorge. We
then had quite a walk down to the cave but the scenery was spectacular.
Once down there we booked in to " do " a cave tour. There were so
many people and all of the tours were pretty booked up. Anyway we went
on the Lucas tour which took one and a half hours, but it was worth it.
We had intended to do the Kanangra Walls walk next but we ran out of
time. We went back the next day and were glad that we had done so.
The scenery was wonderful and we also walked down to the falls - rather
steep. it is strange when you travel around the people you meet.
Before we went on the Kanangra walk we met two men who were quite
chatty and told us it was worth seeing. When we got back(about an hour
later) they were still there and we had a coffee with them. One of
them was very chatty and after he moved off the other guy told us that
he was famous and had, in fact, been the first Australian to walk to
both Poles and had OBEs!! They had just done a days walk from Katoomba
to Kanangra Falls and were waiting to be picked up!

We left Oberon and travelled to Blackheath (which is near Katoomba).
The drive was fantastic and the caravan park is lovely, so we may stay
here a few days as there is so much to see. We still want to do

Mac 2004. The "premium" edition of MS Office Mac contains Virtual PC.
Could you please investigate:
1. Does the DET license include Virtual PC?
2. If so, are you able to mail out copies of Virtual PC to interested
Mac
people who could then use it to run the Partners In Learning PD
software?

This might prove a good compromise to the current discrimination.

(of course, it won't solve my issue as I do not have an NFT notebook)

Welcome To The Revolution...Or How I Switched To Apple

I doubt you¹ve heard anything on the radio, seen anything on the TV
or read
anything in the newspapers but there is a revolution occurring here
in the
UK. Before I go any further let me just skip back in time a couple of
years

to give you some background.

The year is 2003. My name is Alistair Hutchinson, I am working as a
nurse
in my local ER (known here as A+E) and something strange is beginning
to
happen. I am receiving calls at all hours of the day and receiving
visits
whilst working, from others in my profession, often bringing along
their
³ailing friend² for me to administer my healing hands, more often
than not

in a way that seems almost mystical to the people present.

Have you guessed what I¹m doing? No? Well, I¹m fixing, repairing,
innoculating, and generally disinfecting their PC¹s. How my name has
circulated around the hospital I have no idea but all of a sudden it
seems I

am busier with my hobby than I¹ve ever been.

So busy in fact that I stop enjoying it.

For every PC built for a friend I enter into a kind of gentlemans
agreement
to provide free support for the rest of my days, oh and woe betide me
if my

sons aren¹t going to continue that support when I¹m gone!

At around about the same time all this is going on the Windows XP
spyware
writers seemingly quadruple their efforts because, obviously, I don¹t
have

enough to do already.

So I get out, I buy a Mac (PM single 1.8 G5) and sell my PCs. It¹s
not my
first Mac, that award goes to a G3 iBook that I bought previously
whilst a
student and ended up selling after only 6 months due to lack of funds
for my
studies (for studies read beer) but when I sold it I swore I would
one day

own a desktop Mac. That day had come.

From then on whenever I was approached to recommend a spec for a PC
I would
simply reply ³Buy a Mac, it¹s simpler to use no more expensive to buy
and it
won¹t let you down². Now, I have to be honest here, the people I said
this
too merely went and sought advice elsewhere and ended up buying PCs
anyway
but that was ok with me. I didn¹t need the hassle of setting up
computers
for people and spending hours on the phone trying to troubleshoot
their
problems as I was busy studying for one or another course for work
and was
also a new father for the third time so I guess you could say I had
my hands

full.

Fast forward to 2004, people are starting

Time I really retired!

After making the initial gripe, it seemed fair to present the rest of
the story. Karl, if you're reading this, and have any pull within the
Oz Apple store, buy Paul and Alan a beer, or a shiny gold star (or
something). I was left with the impression that a) my order is in safe
hands, and b) that Apple store employees provide that little bit extra
in terms of service.

I guess I'll wander along to my local Apple store this Saturday and
check out what'll shortly be in the mail. iLife integrated apps rock
imho.

Its funny that all the dealings I have ever had in calling 'Over East'
to
Apple, whether it has been on behalf of a customer that has had all
sorts of
problems with their new Mac, or to speak to the people on the 'other
side of

the counter', I have never had one gripe. The phone manner is always
excellent and the person on the other end always seems to take an
interest
in what you say. I guess if I was working for a company that one year
was
voted the best company to work for in Australia, I'd be pretty chuffed
too

:-)

I guess this would be a pointer to the kind of service that will
happen when

the Apple retail Stores eventually hit our shores. I read on Macnn
yesterday that a long time reseller in San Francisco has shut its doors
after being open for a squillion years. They blamed dealings with
Apple and
the retail shops for their closure. You would think that people would
be
jumping up and down about the closure of another Mac store, thanks to
Apple
(allegedly, of course!). Nope. Not one person did in the Comments
section.
All said the service was rubbish and good riddance to a company that
did
nothing to grow or look after its customers. The resellers that are
left in

Oz should take notice of that article. If your service is not up to
scratch, people will have no hesitation in buying from Apple rather
than a
local store. But if you look after your customers, you will have them
for a

lifetime, no matter how many Apple Retail Stores open.

Seeya

Rod!

waited and waited but no telephone call :-(. 5 hours later i was

the RVI (Royal Victoria Infirmary-Newcastle.) I went down and met
--Stirling Moss-- who on receipt of my call had climbed into his car
and driven all the way to Newcastle to talk with the boy. He spent over

Hi Mac,
Sometimes Word does not recognise the dictionary if the "Language" of
the document is not what you originally set it to. I set up Word with
my language as English AUS. All the stuff added to my user dictionary
is available only when the Language is English AUS. If I open a
document with the language set as something different (English US for
example) my user dictionary is not available.

The way round this is to change the "Language" in the document. Select
all the text in the document (Command + A). Then go to the Tools >
Language > English AUS menu item. If you change the language to your
original one then the user dictionary should now be available.

John Taylor

We (my wife, cousin and I ) installed 10 MacIntosh 580 computers at

going to Bali for the John Fawcett Foundation. They are ready to run

already loaded. They are not configured to access the internet and
are not networked. A laser printer and another Mac are to be sent
soon to make up a printing station for transfer of files by floppy

Power supply is the main problem as the makeshift power to the school
is both low on voltage and unreliable. The installation of permanent
power to the school has been costed at around A$220. The Bangli
District Government is broke and the installation may take quite some
time considering that fact. The alternative is that we raise a bit
more money to add to Mac's collection from the BBQ and get the ball
rolling that way.

If that can be agreed to, then I will contact the Foundation and
suggest they get things rolling.

At this stage I think the 10 computers are very adequate for this
small school and, any non Mac Techie may be confused with different
mixes of models and operation systems.

I hope I have explained this adequately,

Re Bali Project

2004-12-13 Thread Malcolm J McCallum
Hi Norm and everyone else. I really cannot answer your question, my own
opinion is I could not organise a P... Up at a brewery :-). Be that, as
it may. I felt I would like to support those kids in Bali and they must
be as frustrated as hell with the Macs sitting there and no power. It
seems to me we need a committee to sit round a table or even round
their respective email programs (sp McCallum--your a POM :-))
programmes and thrash out WHAT we should help and HOW we should help
and HOW SPECIFIC to THAT school and whether it should be JUST related
to Macs and a whole lot of other things. My personal feelings are that
as we are a mac user group it should be at the very least macs or there
is no justification in wamug being involved.

I have been involved in other 'good deeds' and I want to assured that
my money and effort is going to where it is supposed to be going.

I think the first thing to be organised is the discussion group and I
will collect the names of those interested in joining. So send your
interest names to me.

Really enjoyed the BBQ, Thanks to Matt and his band of helpers :-)

I have spoken with Kevin Lock about the school that got the Macs. It
makes a very interesting story and I have persuaded Kevin Lock to come
to the BBQ as my guest to tell the Group how they got the Macs and
printers to Catur Primary School in Bali and set them up. I sat
fascinated for an hour plus on Sunday morning and I think the Wamug
group would be interested to hear a potted version. I had ideas of
auctioning off the remaining BBQ beef and snaggers and putting this
towards the maintenance of the Machines. A 'tech' has been located who
for $2.00 an hour is willing to service the machines. It is obviously
no good these kids having these machines if as soon as they run into
problems they are stuck.

The computers were got through customs with the help of The John

Yes. Sunday, December 12. THe final details are still being worked
out, which is why an official announcement to the list has not been
made, although it was announced at the last WAMUG meeting.

Same place as last time (the barbecue area off Thomas Street, at the

Please note: we need at least 20 people to say they will be there, or

Re: Help ! I cannot open my mac :-(

2004-11-13 Thread Malcolm J McCallum
Hi Shay, thanks once again. I just thought I would tell you what
happened when I did what you suggested. When I started up with command
V held down I got staight into unix/ terminal and the screen filled
with a mass of unix. I decided I would wait until it stopped before I
tried to make sense of what it was saying. That is when I replied to
you on my G3. Before I had finished that reply I suddenly was back into
Mac OS X and everything was working. I had not touched the laptop apart
from the command V . ? I was then somewhat anxious as I did not
know what had been wrong and whether it was now 'Right'. I put the
software disc in and it does not give me the uninstall option the
install works by dragging a folder from disk onto HD. I have looked on
'Keyspans' website and I apparently seem to have the latest version of
software. All very strange :-(.

Thanks once again,

Mac

Try starting up with command v held down. This will display what's
happening, which might display an error message. You might also try
rebooting with the shift key held down for longer.

Good luck,

Malcolm,

I have talked with Miles Humphreys and he has offered help in Bali as
he is stationed there. How he can help has not been determined yet.

I am not a member of WAMUG merely a subscriber to the list, so it is
not for me to initiate actions.

As far as that particular school goes, the macs that are installed
there will get minimal maintenance and once the die they could be
replaced. The staff and students have no background in computers but
a teacher from another school with PC knowledge lives directly
opposite the PS and has offered to help.He has an email address
and I have emailed him since returning without any reply.

I suppose one avenue of support could be to raise a small amount of
money for a technician to take a look at them when needed. A competent
tech would charge something like A$10 per hour and I guess the
foundation would transport him to the school,; although I am not sure
of that.

I am willing and happy to facilitate any assistance given to this or
other schools.

If you burn a CD or DVD disc of an iPhoto album then select the disc

the store and lots of phone calls and lots of stress, we took our
machine to Artref. They promptly told us the problem was probably to
do with the extra RAM we had installed. Then they fixed the machine.
It was covered by warranty and we were home and burning perfect DVDs
the same day. Oh yeh, the symptoms were pixels appearing when the DVD

So, thankyou to Artref, in particular Joel, and be very cautious the

In answer to the original poster: 'cpe' has no technical meaning in the
Internet domain name service -- it is merely one of Telstra's naming
conventions for its own customers. Presumably Luke is correct, except:

In response to Luke's followup:

From WordNet (r) 1.7 [wn]:

  premise
n : a statement that is assumed to be true and from which a

I point this out because some people use 'premise' when they mean
'premises':

  premises

now if I turn on whilst all is connected the disk volumn will only
show up on the iMac.
to have the disk volume show up in the G4, I have to trash the disk
volume off the iMac desktop and then unplug the usb cable

the disk volume will then show up on the G4

Q
Does this mean that USB has priority over Fire wire.
Is this a OS issue or the external harddisk
Is it possible to have the disk volumes showing up in both computers
simultaneously and if so, how would I go about achieving that

I hope the above make sense!

thaks for any advice

I can think of at least three different things you might be trying to
do:

1/ Increase the size of text in your word processor so that it prints
   out bigger,
2/ Increase the magnification in your word processor so that it
displays

bigger on screen but prints out the same as before,
3/ Magnify the size of every programme on your whole screen.

For the first one, it will depend on your word processor. In Microsoft
Word, I think it's COMMAND+] to increase the size (you will need to
select any existing text first, in order for it to increase).

For the last one, it depends on whether you are running OS X or not. If
you are running OS 8 or 9, you should perhaps look at the 'Easy Access'
control panel. Perhaps there is help for Easy Access that tells you
about keystrokes? If you are using Mac OS X, go into 'System
Preferences' and have a play around with 'Universal Access'.
There is also a "Keyboards Shortcuts" list under 'Keyboard & Mouse'.

Hi all,I am getting random Kernel Panics with no pattern that I can
see,3 of them, could be 4 :-).Once on start up, once when I
changed programmes and do not remember the other one. My Serial number
is UV 12143 KLBT iBook /500MHz . I have run DiskWarrior over it with
a clean bill of health. I am still under Applecare. Do I do anything
else? Is there a Protocol that one should go through when it occurs?

It might be worth doing a reinstall of the software ... I've got that
down to 45 minutes (including internet configration and loading of
odds and sods software). Just to rule that out.

There is probably nothing Apple can do for you until your machine
actually demonstrates one or more of the following symptoms: scrambled
or distorted video; appearance of unexpected lines on the screen;
intermittent video image; video freeze; or computer starts up to blank
screen. In my case my iBook demonstrated ALL of these symptoms within
the space of 30 minutes ... culminating with computer starts up to
blank (black)screen.

My iBook's new logic board was being installed this morning. I'll
probably pick it up tomorrow.

Good luck!

I have now had two kernel panics today alone. They started about 2
weeks ago and seem to be getting closer together. yesterday or the day
before I also had an issue where the screen seemed to be stuck in the
"power saver" mode, ie. the brightness was very low even though the
brightness control was at near maximum, and only a reboot fixed it.

Does this sound like the Logic Board issue, or do you think that it is
software related. I am happy to reinstall OSX if it could fix the
issue, but I don't want to waste my time backing up 40GB of data and
reinstalling all my software if it turns out to be hardware related.

Adam.

Cable modem and Router

2004-02-05 Thread Malcolm J McCallum

Hi Wamuggers,

I have a Telstra/foxtel cable modem and a Linksys Etherfast Cable DSL
Router . Matt set this up for me and it worked reasonably well, but
dropped out quite frequently for reasons unknown. The only way I could
get back on line was to do a reset on both 'Boxes'. Sometime recently
Telstra changed something and I could not get online at all :-). For
a few days I was driven to using my cell phone T68i. and bluetooth :-(

I am now reliably back on using !Launch plugging directly into the
cable modem but cannot get to 'share' with the other macs in the Mac
household.

It would seem I need to get the equivalent of Launch into the router or
do I put !Launch onto the other macs.

I want an intergrated system that allows me to play itunes through the
