'mama you been on my mind', a cover of a lesser-known bob dylan song, naturally follows on from the most recent album 'whatever, mortal' and demonstrates further the talents of david pajo. side b includes another outstanding track in the shape of 'pine tree', courtesy of unhome. this highly original piece captures the british quintet of alex tucker, jon richards, jason dormon, james booth and philip avey at their most beautiful - with one of their uniquely structured compositions underpinned by a gentle contemplative vocal, leading to a typically unexpected conclusion. papa m's david pajo has had a rich a varied musical career - here is a brief resumé: the first outing of particular note was the group he formed with brian mcmahan, ethan buckler and britt walford, who were collectively known as slint and recorded two albums together, 'tweez' and the classic 'spiderland'. upon their separation, david went on to participate with the likes of stereolab, the for carnation, king kong, royal trux and will oldham's palace projects. in 1996 david began a stint with chicago's tortoise, which included the recording of the 'millions now living will never die' and 'tnt' albums, after which he moved on to the 'm' projects. the first 'm' single was the split 7" with monade, (laetita from stereolab) and the self titled album as 'aerial m' then followed in 1997. next came the remix lp 'post global music' and then the striking 'live from a shark cage' longplayer, now as papa m. 'papa m sings' followed in 2001 and, as suggested, makes excellent use of mr. pajo's vocals throughout. the most recent papa m album is entitled 'whatever mortal'. david has also recently recorded with mogwai on their 'rock action' lp and will oldham's latest album 'ease down the road'. unhome are an unusual and stimulating collective from the south of england, formed several years ago following the split of the tunbridge wells, kent, slunchcore band joeyfat (who have recently reformed). unhome's 'par avion' track appeared on the 'unlabel two' compilation before the debut album 'a short history of houses' in 1999. this was released to acclaim from many corners; in their review of the lp, the nme compared them to joy division, fugazi and slint - three charming and accurate reference points. david pajo's appearance with awkward silence continues the high standard of the various 'm' projects, with a rare 7" appearance. the wonderful new papa m album 'whatever, mortal' has recently been released via drag city / domino, and the papa m live experience can be seen on tour over the coming months. meanwhile, unhome are currently dedicating time to other projects, which include alex undertaking collaborative work with piano magic, and jason, jon and and james working on new material for joeyfat, amongst many other things... pictures of this release are on our website now: http://www.awkwardsilencerecordings.com ______________________________________________________________ unhome also have an album... if you're interested in tracking down a copy of unhome's 'a short history of houses' album, which includes (in their own words...)
