Is this to say that atmospheres, textures, and a lack of vocals hamstring a track's ability to be expressive? Can you just throw some vocals on an instrumental and instantly have a more 'expressive' song? Is the intended expression maximized when a track is stripped down to a beat and a bass line? Instrumentals with all sorts of atmospheres and textures might take away the likeliness of the track being DIRECT, but I don't see how those factors automatically (or generally) rub out the expressive nature. Just because you're being told WHAT to feel doesn't necessarily mean that it's more expressive than something that is more open to interpretation.
