just a little rant on IDM music. i suppose when this genre was first coined, the title had been started to reflet the works mentioned earlier (black dog, aphex, etc) which by all means were great releases, but it seems that now, as time goes on IDM (Inteligent Dance Music) is less focused on music that reflects its title entirely, and more focused on experimental electronic music, regardless of its "dance-friendly" aspects. one thing that ive found in listening to alot of the releases that get filed under IDM is that being a particularly small nitche, it has alot of even smaller sub genre that get grouped into it as well. actualy...i can remember a year or two ago, before the electroclash explosion, electro seemed to get grouped into IDM as well as alot of the new dub, drum and bass, and even micro-techno that was being released. from what i understand, the title "IDM" was pretty much coined for use primarily to discuss the music on the IDM list, which some of us are subscribed too. i also remember a discussion a while ago...on that list...about changing its name from idm to things like ILM (inteligent listening music) to better fit its new sounds....but as more releases get pressed, the sound keeps changing...so it gets harder and harder to find an acurate name. if you notice as well, as time goes on, the IDM musics of yesterday seemed to gain momentum within its own subculture...and then got marked as another kind of music, after enough of a similar sound got made. such as "glitch", "bip-hop" or "chip tune". artists like funkstorung and autechre (which were previously titled IDM ) artist have spawned an entirely new genre based around a particular style of a previous music. none the less, i think this is just another example of the great phrase "labels are only for jars". actualy i find it interesting that in most cases people almost need a name in order to identify with a media, no matter how experimental the platform is.
speaking of IDM, i also wanted to mention that IMO, the US has been long overdue for a live performance by boards of canada. being that they play seldomly in their native area, its not suprising that noone has booked them here yet, but of all the IDM artists that i think deserve a stage here, these guys are deffinately on the top of my list. i remember a small thread about them here on 313 maybe six months to a year ago, so i know im not the only one waiting to see such an event happen. hopefully one day ill get to see that. ok im done now. thanks for listening. mike (tangible) www.fulcruminn.net www.8bitpeoples.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
