click edit then delete from text box or select none from drop down box.
I think leaving page there from page tab - layout setting is good as it allows
people to hand write page numbers if required.
IMHO it is to be expected that footer settings are on the footer tab...

Opened with Excel and it was OK
Just to be sure I edited it and saved and repeated process. It still works for
me. Try downloading OOo 2.2.1 and see if problem continues for you...
