This behaviour occured only after upgrading to Mac OS X 10.6 "snow leopard", since then in any version including 3.2rc4 I use right now, on Mac OS X 10.6.2. I read somewhere that font handling changed a lot in snow leopard. There is another font I used before the system now does not even accept.
