Another program i've got has no way of specifying a configuration.. I
dont even think it uses alsa-lib, it just tries to use the soundcard

Hi Kyle -
Mandrake 9 has ALSA installed already by default
(rc2). In fact, it found both of my cards by name
during the install (intel8x0 and hammerfall HDSP).
I have heard of situations where it chooses the OSS
driver by default, but in that case you should only
have to change your modules.conf

While asoundrc specifies different configurations, applications must
still select which they will use. I haven't used mplayer recently,

Does this look right?

I think the problem is caused by the kernel is not compiled with the same gcc vesion as the alsa. Spesially if you have an rpm installed kernel. Look in the message log after booting and see what gcc compiler is used to compile the kernel.
I used up2date to upgrade the kernel to version 2.4.18-10 I

There are only 10 types of people in the world:
Those who understand binary and those who don't.
I have a fresh Mandrake 9 install, but alsa chokes.
The ./configure is flawless, but 'make install' results in an infinite loop
of warning messages such as
"[path deleted] warning: this is the location of the previous definition"
and also
"[path deleted] warning: "__ver_snd_trident_write_voice_re

What kind of motherboard/south bridge is this? VT8233 or VT8235, by any
chance?

Hi all,
I'm experiencing problems trying to make my on-board AC97 sound card
working with the alsa drivers.
I installed the 0.9.0rc5-fr1 drivers (from the the freshrpms rpms: I had
to rebuild the source rpm package in order to to have the drivers
matching my athlon with kernel 2.4.18
