Anyway it sounds like either you have the wrong sound card selected (ie you
have more than one and the pc speaker is one of them) or you have a
slightly weird soundcard.

I use a passive aluminium external hd case and it is pretty quiet...
I have found seagate drives have the lowest noise output... everything
is compatible.
