okay... yes.. qjackctl... did it.. setting to 22050Hz.
Also, only recording one source gives mono (duh).
I AM able to set the bit rate... 8bit is terrible, but
16bit works, so this is good enough.

Well, I'm not familiar with the amixer output, so perhaps someone else
can give a better answer... however, my FIRST thoughts are:
1) I don't know of any single microphones that are stereo, after all
it's a single mic (input).. how would you be getting two different sounds?

There are no docs, and google doesn't turn up anything either.
I've tried: output1 output_1, playback_1, 1, in1, in_1, capture_1
When I run qjackctl, I see input/output connection ports such as
capture_1, p

... anyway, he ultimately suggested it was some kind of alsa install/config
problem and asked me for alsa RPM
