Hello,

[I sent this message from a non-subscribed address first, so it's
awaiting moderation, and might show up again in the near or far
future... Also, since writing the message previously, I have found
LM4545.pdf (mentioned in
http://alsa.opensrc.org/index.php?page=SbLiveMixer) which seems to
explain a lot of this.]

I've been trying to figure out how the Soundblaster Live mixer works,
and am wondering whether what I think happens is right. Maybe somebody
can clear some of this up. Thanks in advance.

My card is a SB Live Player (same as Value?) and I have a simple
stereo setup, so I haven't checked any of the controls dealing with
surround sound, the LiveDrive and digital in-/outputs. I'm using ALSA
0.9.0rc5.

There's two main sections on the card, one for analog mixing and
digital<->analog conversion (handled by snd-ac97-codec) and one for
digital stuff. [Are these on separate chips, the analog part being
handled by an AC97 chip, the digital part by the EMU10K1?]

The analog part has inputs

Line line in from back of card
CD, Aux, Video internal line in's from CD drive, etc.
Mic microphone input from back of card via 'Mic Boost'
Phone ?
PC Speaker (?) internal two-pin input to be connected to
                mainboard output for PC speaker?
PCM output of digital section via DAC

It mixes these via the relevant controls '<input> Playback Switch' for
muting and '<input> Playback Volume' for setting the volume to mono
('Mix Mono') and stereo ('Mix') outputs. The stereo output goes to
line out at the back of the card via 'Master Playback' switch and
volume controls. The mono output also has such controls, but does it
lead anywhere?

Additionally, there's a switch ('Capture Source') for selecting exactly
one of
- Line, CD, Aux, Video, Mic, Phone inputs before mixing
- Mix and Mix Mono before 'Master Playback' controls
This line then goes through Capture Switch and Volume to the digital
section, through an ADC.

Questions:
* What is the Phone input?
* What does the PC Speaker input (or is it output?) do exactly?
* Where does 'Mic Select' go? Does it select between the back
microphone input and another one (LiveDrive?) before leading to 'Mic
Boost'?
* What does 'Mono Out' (choices 'Mix','Mic') do? I thought that this
might allow sending 'Master Mono Playback' out through the microphone
input, but that doesn't seem to be the case.
* Which of the Volume controls can amplify and/or attenuate the
signal? 'Capture Volume' seems to amplify for values > 0; 'Master
Playback Volume' or the mixer '* Playback Volume' controls amplify at
100%.

That's all for now, speculations on the digital section to come...

Cheers
Robert
