It is a step helpful for the totally blind who are using the Talking Arch
installation system. Without it, getting speech working reliably is complicated.

Hello,
Isn’t this what makepkg.conf is for? You can specify all the make options you’d
want in there.
Best,
Zack.

Hello,
I think the boot menu will still appear, because the default boot entry just
indicates which OS will be booted after the timeout. It doesn’t stop the menu
from appearing, or you couldn’t pick another OS easily.
Best,
Zack.

Hi All,
This is admittedly more about Linux in general than Arch specifically, but I’m
wondering if anybody has insight into why I can’t delete EFI variables, when
efivarfs is mounted read-write. For anybody interested, I am wanting to remove
the default boot entry created by systemd-boot, but
Hi,
The solution is to create the directory under /var which alsacrtl expects. I
think it’s /var/run or /var/lock, but I don’t remember specifics and don’t have
my machine in front of me at the moment. If you do that, alsactl store will
work as expected.
Best,
Zack.

Hi,
Did your friend actually go through the process of installing Talking Arch? If
so, espeakup should have been installed as one of the manual steps involved. If
not, you need to do this yourself. It isn’t difficult, but you won’t have
speech feedback obviously.
Log in as root, and then run “p

Hi All,
So my laptop upgraded to the latest version of Windows 10 recently, and this
seems to have undone the hack of replacing the default bootx64.efi file. That
is, the file is still SystemD’s boot loader, but somehow I’m back to only
being able to boot Windows reliably. Has anyone else seen
Hi,
I know this. :) The Xorg package doesn’t contain xinitrc. That’s in the xInit
package.
So pacman -S xinit, and it will be there.
Best,
Zack.

Hi All,
One of the perks of being blind is that I don’t need the screen to work. I
prefer to keep it off for privacy whenever possible.
On earlier hardware, I used to be able to use the vbetool command to turn off
the screen. Nowadays that seems no longer to work, “vbetool dpms off,” returns

Hi Murari,
Thank you for this suggestion. It seems to have worked as expected. My laptop
defaults to Arch, but I can boot Windows with the second entry.
I hope I remember to upgrade the renamed image when systems-boot changes. I
don’t anticipate that being too often, thankfully.
Best and thanks
Hi All,
I’ve been a Linux user off and on for ten years or so, and over the past while
really come to enjoy the simplicity of Arch. I decided to install on my new HP
laptop which came pre-installed with Windows 10.
I honestly almost feel like I preferred the BIOS/boot sector situation. I
