NOR'EASTER IN PROGRESS THROUGH SATURDAY MORNING HIGH WINDS THIS AFTERNOON THROUGH SATURDAY MORNING SNOW/RAIN CHANGES TO RAIN MOST AREAS THIS MORNING THEN CHANGES TO HEAVY SNOW BETWEEN MID-AFTERNOON (INLAND) AND EARLY THIS EVENING (COAST) CONTINUING INTO EARLY SATURDAYMINOR COASTAL FLOODING AND BEACH EROSION AT THE SATURDAY 6AM HIGH TIDE FRIDAY - FEBRUARY 8TH Precipitation is progressing south to north through the area early Friday morning. Along the coast and in south NJ, its rain. Inland sections on central NJ and in northern NJ, the precipitation is snow or a snow/sleet mix. The rain/snow line will progress northward during the morning and early afternoon and then reverse and start heading back to the coast mid-afternoon through early evening. As a side note, I understand the reasoning for a blizzard warning in NYC...don't know why it starts at 6am this morning since it will be raining until mid-afternoon. There should not be much in the way of travel problems through mid-afternoon. As the rain/snow line begins to crash back towards the coast, northern NJ will see a change to snow that will likely impact the evening commute. The changeover will be occurring during the evening commute in central NJ, so the earlier you can leave the get home...the better. Once the rain changes to snow, it will come down heavily. There may be several hours of 2 to 3 inch snowfall rates along with heavy blowing and drifting. The heaviest snow will fall before 1am with moderate snow continuing thereafter until around sunrise on Saturday morning. Winds will increase and gust to 55 mph over coastal sections and 40 mph inland. The worst of the winds will coincide with the heavy snowfall this evening. There will be minor coastal flooding and beach erosion at the time of high tide Saturday morning, but a more northerly component with the winds at that time will prevent any serious coastal flooding. To reiterate, the changeover time from snow to rain will be mid-afternoon in northern NJ (except north of I-80 where the precipitation will remain mostly snow), around 5pm for inland central and south NJ and around 7pm to 8pm for coastal sections of NJ (including Monmouth & Ocean) Will narrow the range on snowfall accumulations as follows: Coastal sections of Monmouth/northern Ocean: 6 to 9 inches Inland Monmouth/northern Ocean and the remainder of the northern half of NJ - 9 to 12 inches. Northeast corner of NJ east of I-287 and north of I-280 including all of NYC - 12 to 15 inches Southern Burlington/Southern Ocean/Philly/North of AC Expressway - 3 to 6 inches South of AC Expressway - 1 to 3 inches © Tri-State Storm Watch.
