Annual Blessing of Waters held in Asbury Park today
ASBURY PARK — Five teens from New Jersey were blessed by the 
Metropolitan Evanelos of New Jersey for being the victors in finding 
a Holy Cross in the ocean.

The Greek Orthodox Churches from New Jersey held its Divine Liturgy, 
Elevation of the Holy Cross, the Blessing of the waters and the 
diving for the Cross by the Greek Orthodox Youth Associations on 
Sunday at the Paramount Theater and at the beach off Ocean Avenue.

Lazaros Pappa from the Ascension Church in Fairview; John Zaphiros 
form Saint 
Demetrios in Union; Catherine Zymaris from Saint Nicholas in Wyckoff; 
Aspasia Disakias from Saint George in Asbury Park and Constantine 
Demopoulos from Saint Andrew in Randolph received individual 
blessings from the Metropolitan Evanelos after they retrieved the 
cross from the water.

"This is an honor,'' Aspasia Disakias, 16, of Ocean Township said.

Each year, the teens from the various churches either volunteer or 
are chosen to be 
the churches represenative Holy Cross diver. 

The blessings and retrieving the Cross signifies good luck for the 
year.

About 500 parishioners attended the event.

The annual event is in celebration of the churches new year.
