I'm not suggesting or recommending a specific model. There are in fact
many contenders depending on one's taste. I own an example, but there
are many more to be found. My point was that you don't have to spend a
grand on a DAC to get a decent one.

The thing is, if you rip with iTunes (not sure if it affects lossless)
then iTunes applies the emphasis on the audio file itself.
Some other rippers do this too. But that's OK, because we're dealing
in the lossy domain.
