Heard them at the 2003 VSAC show. Running off De Havilland SET amps, the
Rethm's (second, I think) were spooky good, with not to much of the
infamous lowther bark. Plus they looked cool.

They are very technically competent and I am thankful they don't push

I don't care for Fostex. Never have. The Visaton B200 is a whole
different animal. I listen to a variety of music from solo acoustic
guitar to big band to classical to reggae to blues to bluegrass to hard
rock at levels exceeding 100db. EVERYTHING sounds good on my A8s

Yes that would be great - I could leave my amp at one volume level for
all the devices going into it then, as opposed to now where I have
evyrthing else set to 3 or so, the squeezebox needs about 5.5 to 6 for
the same volume.

I don't think rolling DAC chips is an option. If you look at the
datasheet for the PCM1748, you'll see that its a 16 pin SSOP/QSOP
package. Take a look here:
