Jon,
No. I'm talking about jitter at the s/pdif output -- not at the DAC.
Point being, you feed THAT signal into a really good DAC, one that
largely eliminates jitter, and you're in business.
The Transporter is just that, in one box.

So the SB3's jitter measurement is significantly less than all of the

JA's are made post-DAC on the analog output, whereas Sean's are made on
the clock in the SPDIF output.

This discussion's come up a few times in various contexts, and I thought
it might be worth mulling over some. All theoretical of course, since
there's no real way to obtain statistics, only to surmise.

Don't worry, I'm not going anywhere.
Something about using DACs with the Squeeze Box, using the Squeeze Box
alone, how they compare, whether you can have a DAC that is impervious
to jitter, and whether that matters, considering the really low jitter
of the Squeeze Box with a good cable. And, whether Stereophile was
fair. The consen

Wait, so the Transporter doens't have WC input so it can be slaved to
the clock of an external DAC? What if one doesn't want to use the

Jon,
If anything, one more component and one more set of cables in the
signal path will degrade your output. At the very best -- very best --
the preamp and cables will be perfectly transparent. In other words,
they will have no effect at all.
Of course, this is not always the case. Many comp
There have been some threads elsewhere indicating that a pre-amp does
something that enhances the sound quality - all the usual, soundstage,
etc etc.
I don't recall seeing the science behind this conclusion, just that
experiments on the part of the posters of this opinion have resulted in
this.

Thanks for the advice. The audiophile call was only a joke of course
