I believe jitter in itself has no sound.
Imho, it simply makes other distortions (approximations in the D/A
process) sound different, become more apparent. ;)
This is probably the reason why reclocking was introduced in the first
place.

There is a paper around somewhere (I searched but couldn't find it
again), that explains how jitter can be introduced into a S/PDIF
bitstream by limiting the frequency response of the pulse detection
circuity at the front end of the S/PDIF receiver chain. From what I
recall, the cause was the bip
I would add to comments about set up issues. Getting the transition
right from mains to sub without a nasty hump or large dip in the
frequency response is a huge challenge. I have fiddled around for days
to get my sub / main combo to work well, and I am still not 100% happy
wit it.

The biggest advantage I have found to using a sub is you have greater
flexibility in placing discrete LF drivers in a location where they
will best interact with the room. The trade off is increased
complexity - and the subsequent experimentation with (and obsession
with?) measurement and adjustm

I appreciate all of the comments and experiences. I should have
positioned my original question more as a theoretical exercise. My
friend quotes Floyd Toole religiously and the mantra he spouts is that
you can never have a system that reaches its full potential unless you
have at least one subwoof

Great.
I suggest you stop there, because...

True, and for good or bad, the term audiophile has taken on negative
connotations in many circles. My interpretation of the word is
certainly different now

Use the preamp for daily adjustment. Leave touch on Max.

I have two stereo systems and one home theater system, all with
subwoofers.
In each system the subwoofer is at least as good as the main speakers,
if not better than the speakers. Having a good quality sub is essential
to getting the sound of the bass from the sub properly integrated with

I run a 4.1 system in my living room, dropping to 2.1 when listening to
stereo... You mention your speakers are rated to 22Hz, but don't give
too many details. By the low end, I'd expect you've got floorstanders?
I run a satellite/sub type system, with B&W 705's. I find that taking

So, totally bypass the pre-amp. That is an option I never thought
about. I'll give that a thought. But I have an am/fm radio into pre-

Thought I'd solicit some opinions from the more experienced listeners
here. I have a 2 channel system and am happy with the bass performance
that I get but friends insist that the quality of my system would
improve with the addition of a subwoofer. One in particular is heavy

System gain can be discussed to the cows come home :)
very neglected by audiophiles ?
It's not uncommon that the gain is to high everywhere, source is to hot
pre amp has to much gain and power amp is to sensitive ?
Idealy gain should be sensible in every step.
Do you have other sources ?
