stick the speakers to them. No way a kid's gonna tip that, safer than
what you have.
You'll improve the imaging much better this way than by playing with
DACs, IMO.

Make an audiophile statement! Little Chinese valve amp into mini
speakers - looks cool and sounds great. I use a Ming-Da into little
Harbeths (LS3/5a updates), with the amp small enough to sit on one of
the speakers. All off ebay for under 500 (pounds, unfortunately!)

I spoke to some of the guys from Meridian at a hifi show last year and
they said they had loads of Squeezeboxes driving their speakers. It
seems a perfect idea.
You may need to be careful to get good 75ohm cables though - maybe
that's why people suggest DSP control units?

Also, the volume control is surprisingly transparent - it does not
reduce bit depth (unless you are playing 24-bit material), although it
does increase the noise in the DAC. This is not easy to hear, in my
experience.

that's one advantage of the SB3 idea.
On the PC you could use softsqueeze, but it is rather less reliable
than a real SB3.

mp is also good at FLAC to Mp3 conversion. Either way, make
sure you use the latest version of Lame, which gets better sounds at
lower bitrates.
