is something about the markup/output of the pages generated by the
Custom Browse plugin that causes my app to be slower at parsing them?

Browse plugin to support what I'm looking for here and I'll post the
patch/update for you here. I don't know the layout/architecture of
your code so a suggested approach would be very helpful.

only one stutter which I believe was caused by a heavy load on my
server, not a wireless dropout.
