Doesn't look like this has been noted so far - Kirk McElhearn, who
writes for MacWorld and a few other places - has posted a series of
articles on the claims audiophile magazines make about cables. You can
find them all currently on the front page of his web site, 'Kirkville'

Yeah, I agree the huge disadvantage of aac and mp3 is the fact that
you're stuck with what you're stuck with, and transcoding is a no-no.
OTOH, I'm trying hard to spend more time enjoying what I have and less
planning a future of listening that may never get here - like switching
off iPods to some

What a fine read! Inspirational line: " I would gladly listen to an MP3
192kbps of a well recorded/mastered album than a poor DSD128 or 24/192."
It's taking some time, but I think the broader audio community is
starting to change its mind about what's most important.

So, this continues what I see as a run of good news. High quality sound,
properly understood, ain't expensive, and is getting easier and easier
to reach. What you have to concern yourself with is not *that* much -
jitter isn't an issue unless something is broken. Ditto for cables. And
so on for am
Took me a bit to get there, but yes, you're right. I listen on decent
but modest gear, which feels about right, in terms of how much
mental/emotional space it occupies in my life.

That's the thing: I can't bring myself to trust any of what gets
written. This really is a "fish stinks from the head down" sort of
thing. If you will tell me with a straight face tha
I dunno. I'm having a hard time laughing, given that real money is being
paid.
I found 'this'

especially because there was a time when I looked forward to reading
Stereophile and its related sites.

I like your answer, though I'm starting to get the point that moving to
file-based playback is neither cheap nor without considerable work.
Question: what do you use to play back from your fitpc? I assume some
variety of Squeezebox Server/Logitech Media Server/whatever it's

Well, I don't want to drag the thread too far afield, but let me ask you
guys (and whoever else wants to play) about workflow and V'box
hardware.
When I ran it I just grabbed an old Dell that was a 3 gig something or

I know it's an old thread, but I just stumbled into it last night while
reading through Archimago's brilliantly done blog.
Looping back to the original question, my take.
Like a lot of people, I wasted way too much time on dubious audiophile
claims, though my particular weakness lies in the dire

Apologies. I was writing quickly and managed to misstate name. It is a
Shin-ola power cable, which I assume is Americanized.

bove is true, but a sense of *detail* joins the fray. It's as if I
could drill down through endless layers of detail and there would
always be more to find. Yet I don't feel as if any information is being
