I'm surprised no one has mentioned room treatment. I'm not surprised
that in a room that small that music gets garbled. You want to treat
at least the first reflection points behind the speakers and on the
side walls. Atsacoustics makes some nice inexpensive acoustic panels.

Maybe you should be looking for speakers that have the reflex port
located at their front?
I own a pair of KEF iQ3, and they sound pretty good, even if they're
close to the wall...

£800. I wonder whether anyone has any experience of the new EPOS Epic.
Manufacturer suggests they can be placed up to 10cm away from the
wall?
