Darren,
How are your soldering skills ?
I strongly recommend one of the diy units.
I went through range of commercial dacs including Transporter, Minimax,
Benchmark, Audio GD, Northstar Design, Weiss and some I don't remember
names of. Always there was something keeping me off those units, either
Ok, stock Touch analague out versus Benchmark HDR DAC1 (both connected
via HDR to my active speakers and sub).
Just done an A/B sighted comparison using the following tracks for
variety:
- Strode Rode (from Saxophone Collosus) by Sonny Rollins
- Undisclosed Desires (from The Resistance) by Muse

Sorry .. though I do have similar equipment to darren and I have
listened to the DAC in the Touch through a pre-amp compared to the
Benchmark through the same pre-amp then into active speakers. There is
just no comparison whatsoever. I bought the Benchmark immediately. I
have a second Touch in m

My question was real
Nobody 'needs' a Benchmark. Nobody 'needs' a Touch for that matter. All
I can say is I would much rather have my DAC1 than the money I spent on
it.

Any decent dealer will let you have a home dem of a Benchmark - and if
you buy online you've 7 days to return it in any case. Just listen,
make your own mind up with your own music in your own system.

I would like to help, but I've not made that comparison yet - my active
speakers have only balanced input. I might try running the SBT

They are on their own because "good" can mean something different for
each person.
For line level equipment, accurate (transparent) has only one me
A Benchmark DAC1 HDR gives a huge improvement to the Touch (ime) (imo)
(ymmv).

If you want "accurate", I don't think you can get much more of it than
the Transporter, SE or 2.hand standard, balanced out and directly into
a suitable power-amp, gets you.
There are a number of good reasons for this.

Then I'll bet there are an awful lot of people who are on their own.
Which would mean that they're not really on their own.

I use SBT with Benchmark DAC1 HDR (which is identical sonically to a
DAC1 PRE). For all practical purposes, I don't think you'll find a more
accurate IOW transparent DAC. I'm of the opinion that if desired flavour
should be added later in the chain and that loudspeaker design (and the

It's hard to say. Personally, I'm leaning towards adding either a W4S
DAC-1 or the Rega DAC to my SBT. I haven't heard either so I can't
comment. But, nobody can answer this question for you. What you call
"detailed", I might consider "strident" or "edgy". Demo as many as you

If I could afford one, Id get it!
Happily using a modded Beresford Caiman with Gator board

Bit too cheap for your list though ;)
sorry, I know this may be discussed a few times but as a noob I need
more info.
I compared with SBT with my Rega planet 2000 cd player last night and
the difference are subtle,so I wonder if an external dac can give a
substantial sound quality improvement, please comment if you tried with
