I'm seeing intermittent compiz crashes when launching smplayer as well. Enabling 'loose binding' and setting Texture Filter to 'Best' seems to reduce the occurrence of this issue. I've yet to reproduce the problem with 'indirect rendering' enabled or with vdpau disabled. I did not have this problem

I also suffer from this bug. In my case at least, the problem is relative to the home directory, and I don't know what to do. I logged in with the guest account, and compiz started up flawlessly. I changed my home dir, and compiz started up flawlessly. -- Compiz does not load at startup on Ubuntu
