I get the attached compiz_crash.out file when trying to start compiz.
compiz is attempting to start on a Natty installation just upgraded from

Note that I logged this bug from a VM because the natty installation was
pretty unusable, and so the BootDmesg etc files are from this VM, not
the crashing natty installation.

Ok, so it seems pretty clear at this point this was a driver bug with
the intel driver and i915 hardware but as natty should already have what
you're getting from the x-updates PPA I'm going to mark this as fixed.

If you already put the "xorg-edgers" PPA in effect on your system, you
should probably do a "ppa-purge" first, before installing anything else
xorg-related.
Do "sudo apt-get install ppa-purge", and then "ppa-purge -h", and take
it from there.

Following up on your comment, I tried "ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates", too
(full command-line below) -- and for me that also did the trick. This
PPA is a little less bleeding-edge than "xorg-edgers" (obviously), so
some might prefer it.
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-upda
Compiz can only use the icons the application tells X about. These apps
are expecting their icons to only be shown on a 24px panel so they set
low resolution icons.

You need to turn off Visual Effects or edit the gnome-session gconf
settings to get it to switch to metacity by default before uninstalling,
the compiz package cannot change user settings on install or uninstall,
no package can.

Come on!! No one else ever noticed this? Compiz is great, but the

ppa:xorg-edgers seems to fix this for me. If anyone else wants to try:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:xorg-edgers/ppa && sudo apt-get update &&
sudo apt-get upgrade
So newer drivers should fix this problem.

I agree that the best solution to this would be to make gnome-screenshot
use libunique or something so you can't have multiple windows of it open
at once. Otherwise we'd need to special case this application in at
least 3 window managers.
** Package changed: compiz (Ubuntu) => gnome-utils (Ubuntu)
Yes, it's reproducible, but we need to be sure in which ubuntu component
is the problem. And well, it could be also solved by correctly spacing
the repetition of the print screen hotkey
