that's the workspace switcher you're seeing. Can you see if metacity is
running and is so restart compiz after enabling cube and rotate?

The configuration SHOULD have been attached as GconfCompiz.txt (I filed
with ubuntu-bug compiz), but clearly it is not present. As per request,

In Ubuntu Natty 11.04 64-bit, installed from the Alpha 2 and all updates
installed, Compiz randomly crashes. The windows are then still there, but
without the borders. Also, unity is gone. Compiz version is
1:0.9.2.1+glibmainloop4-0ubuntu9.

Thanks. I guess there's no workaround to this? Can you point me to any

Thanks for all the info. It is indeed a virtualbox driver problem. I
installed the vbox open-source drivers (virtualbox-ose-guest-utils and
virtualbox-ose-guest-x11) and compiz now runs. (I had to reboot three
times before the desktop appearance manager worked without crashing but
it all seems fine
when you minimize a window there is an invisible window called 'untitled
window' which gets the focus. now using nux trunk that 'untitled window'
is called 'nux input window' I believe that is *the* invisible window
causing the issue. bug 705536 and bug 693801 are on the very same
issue(tm)
