There has been a special hack in the fglrx driver for compiz to work with
proper OpenGL acceleration. AMD told us they will remove it but it looks like
they haven't done so yet. In anticipation, a fix was removed from Compiz and
this is what is causing the problem. The fix will be restore and we
I have just checked on 11.10, and the issue still persists.

Public bug reported:

launched in a running Ubuntu (UNity) session. However, if "compiz

I just tried the same packages on the open radeon X drivers and the
artifacts do not appear at all, Unity seems to run well. So it's
typically just a bug with fglrx and the new compiz (still seeing #928232
though).

Okay, I guess one of the updates did something, because now compiz has
like a 25% on startup of entering "fail mode" where it will crash the
first time you switch workspaces (and occasionally upon closing
windows).
Re-installing X-Updates made absolutely no difference this time.

the cause of this issue - and he's "not really supposed to use work time
to support things like the cube."
The root of the problem here seems to be that Canonical/Ubuntu
developers have decided that, even though their new pet

Try this:
Check Compiz Settings Manager:
Go to Animations -> Focus Animations -> Select the one Animation -> click
"edit" -> Set "Focus Effect" to "None"
Does this solve your problem?

Will a downgrade to Ubuntu Lucid solve this issue?
In that case I might well consider this option, as it will also solve
other issues related to the bad interaction between Gnome3 and third-
party applications (e..g, RabbiSVN).
