I have tried this on every possible login session I can find and the only one
that fails is the default Ubuntu
session. If I log in using the Ubuntu 2D session, it works there. This
absolutely can not be a gnome-terminal

Difference between 11.10 & 12.04 is huge.

I recall, in 11.10, my laptop's intel card ran glxspheres at 60 fps
while the discrete nvidia at about 140.

I think I found the reason why my workaround had those side-effects that were
hanging up compiz, I'll test this more in the morning and push to my PPA for
everyone interested (if it works). It seems I didn't ungrab the X server when
there was a failure with rebinding the texture, which essential
I recently switched from using the fglrx driver to using the open-source
radeon driver and this issue appears to have gone away.

Title:
I've been having this issue on my laptop with Precise much more
frequently as of recent. Intel i915. I have no lock screen when I resume
so I see a frozen version of my desktop. The mouse can move around and
updates itself but the screen doesn't update.
