FWIW, this is still happening on a fairly regular basis. It seems to
happen more if, having rebooted, I don't wait a little while before
logging in, i.e. I restart the machine and enter my password as soon as
the login screen appears. Maybe this points to something not being
initialised in time.

I'm pretty sure it is a bug introduced by Unity.
This doesn't happen when i use Gnome 3 or Cinnamon on my machine, Unity 3D
only.

considered "good" in comparison to compiz using a constant 10-20% CPU

@Tweed1: I have just run Quicken 2000 on Unity 2D.
The window decorations remained, but the panel and Launcher become 100%
transparent -- so I could not see anything there. Even the shut-down
dialogue (Restart, Cancel or Shut Down) was completely invisible.

Current status (always global and hidding menu) is absolutely user UNfriendly.
So my opinion is:
[x] Global Menu only for maximized windows
[x] Do not hide Global Menu

The frames disappear from windows. I run the command /usr/bin/compiz-
decorator and they return.
I found the work-around on google so I am not alone with this problem.
Also, I have hangups now and the, Compiz is at 75 % processor use and
unresponsive during a minute or two.
It's highly annoying and it's one of the reasons why I use Gnome shell.
I don't want a window to be on two workspaces at the same time when I do
my work.

I just downloaded the source for the compiz-plugins-default package,
applied Dougs patch and compiled the scale plugin. (I had to install
quite some dependencies to get cmake to stop complaining... ) Basically
- the patch works.. Would be nice with an officially fixed package
though...
