Actually this was a bug in gnome-appearance-properties and I fixed it a
couple weeks ago in karmic so this problem should be gone now.

Hmm, the bug you linked is something about a battery warning, I think
you mean Bug #389686. I experienced it some time ago, but then compiz
could be enabled (metacity just kept running, which could be "fixed" by
logging off and on again). Here, I cannot enable compiz in the first
place.

This looks kind of like bug 389696 which is a problem with metacity
telling the session manager to keep starting it over and over.
