I have the same provlem. Please read below.
When I log off or restart the system after I login metacity and compiz
are not start. What I do is to open Appereance settings go to visual
effects and from none chose the Extra and then everything goes back to

I have this problem since I boosted my hard drive speed. 2/3 of the time
