I too am observing my system hang during shutdown due to this issue.

upload. libpfm4 is now available on x32, papi will just need a symbol

Last week I switched the default openmpi implementation on s390x from
mpich to openmpi.
Now the default MPI implementation is the same in all release
architectures, which is nice per se.
