that's the GNOME standard of performance

Apparently, the answer is "no".

fwiw, none of those involved makes positive contributions to anything
that I work on.

Bug#1108742: xterm is missing in Gnome's application list

2025-07-05 Thread Harald Dunkel
There is a blacklist? I had spent precious time searching for some
GUI or context menu to add and remove applications to show. I'd never
expected a static blacklist. It doesn't even have a man page.

Can anybody maintaining this blacklist imagine I have installed xterm,
vim and emacs on purpose, because I actually want to *use* them?

actually, it's more than that. /etc/gnome/menus.blacklist lists
more than 150 desktop files, intentionally excluding anything that GNOME
may provide, including KDE, XFCE4, Vim (because after all, GNOME
provides a text-editor).

I don't see anything comparable in the other desktop environments.
(I install all of the ones that I know about, for testing).

Because xterm is installed on most desktops (as a dependency of the xorg
metapackage for instance), and Gnome packagers do no want to confuse
novice users with multiple terminal applications, so they blacklist
xterm.

Different people have different expectations, see the discussion in
#645736.

Package: xterm
Version: 398-1

The xterm package provides *.desktop files, but it is not
shown in Gnome's application window. This is not as expected.
