Since gcc 4.2.0, gcj incorporated native support for linking to a static
libgcj (via the -static-libgcj option, as explained in
http://gcc.gnu.org/wiki/Statically%20linking%20libgcj ).
The thing is that the static libgcj is nowhere in debian.

I try Live Free in January of this year. It worked for a friend and I figured I
