Is (telephone) contact information necessary?

Just curious, are we asking for a telephone number to contact the prospective debian developer. I see that some AMs allude to this in their reports, while most do not. The AM howto says nothing about this. Is the practice of calling the applicant discontinued these days? TIA. Gopal. -- Gopal
